Great Job, Yardbird!! I guess I'd better get started on my photo Panther. Anyone built this kit? Or know what the cameras are supposed to look like? I've built a SR-71 before (the old Revell kit) but nothing where you might actually see the Cameras. - Calvin

Hello again. I'm planning on doing either an O-2a or O-2b, I haven't decided yet, but I'm leaning toward the O-2a. I'm planning on using the Testors 1/48 scale kit. I'll of course add some goodies to cockpit!

Panel shot O2-A:
The B.S bomber would be a good build too. One of the guys that flew them in VN told me they would tape an F-4 Phantom takeoff. As they took off from one of the small forward operating areas they would play that a full volume. Kinda confused the locals!

To: johnforster,

If you still have not found the clear sprue for your SR-71 and it is the Italeri/Testors kit, send me an email at: darwine@accessus.net I think I have an alternate solution to the problem.

I've pulled the SR-71 from this build and the Stealth A/C build, until a solution can be found. Sad [:(]
However, I've purchased a Revell 1/144 737-800 from eBay and am bidding for a Minicraft 1/144 737-400. I'll let you know when/if I'm successful.
Cheers,
John

You guys seem to be a lot more knowledgeable about the 0-2, so I've got a question. What's the deal with the windows on the right side cockpit door? I know the 0-2a had them, but the 0-2b didn't. Any one know why? I know they were for better observation, but I was just wondering why the difference between to the two versions.

The story that I heard while in VN was that the a model was designed and built specifically for the Air Force and FAC role. The b model was a group of civilian Model 337s that were modified for the USAF. They didn't bother to include the lower windows because of the extra cost and limited uselfulness. That is backroom gossip and I can't guarantee that it is accurate.

Right,
The B models were off the shelf 337's with no mods except replacing the baggage door with a speaker for broadcasting propaganda, and a leaflet dispenser in the front right belly.
The O2-A had a third spar in the wing, and hard points, 2 in each wing. The elevator was the longer chord from the 336 model, giving the O2-A a heavier elevator control as preferred by military pilots. One of the main drawbacks of the O2 was it had side by side seating, not tandem. The windows in the door and just in front allowed the pilot to see the ground from the left seat. Otherwise he'd have to turn left to see, and predictability in combat is deadly. There is also a window above the pilot's head. O2-A's starting in 1968 had a larger pilot's window which slightly bubbled out at the top. This cost about 2 kts in airspeed, but made visibility much better. Look just above my head, in the earlir production O2's the window would have stopped below my nose. Also if you look carefully at the rear windows, there are little doors in them. These allowed observers to fire M-16's out the windows.
Try www.cessnawarbirds.com for more info.

Some O2-A's also had skids of titanium installed on the belly to assist in gear-up landings. The black strip on the belly.

sharpspade: You can use Blackwolf's badge, my badge or make one of your own. At the end of the biuld, we'll use Blackwolf's badge as the official GB badge for this build.
Cheers,
John

Got a little bit more done on the RF-101 Voodoo....

I don't know if the kit came with one side of the fuselage warped, or if the part got warped over the years whilst this was in storage... the bottom piece is straight.

This is the fuselage after gluing together; it took me 4 days to glue it together (waited till the glue was good n dry, 24 hours, before gluing the next section....)

Bottom view of the fuselage.
Next step will be applying putty, sanding that smooth... and rescribing panel lines.

Damon, it looks like you are getting the best of the Voodoo. Keep after it. Remember, "There is no problem which cannot be cured by application of suitable quantities of high explosives." Or, a milder version, "Get a bigger hammer."

Great stuff, Mick, thanks.
Hey all, I've bought the two base kits I need for the Wedgetail, the Revell 1/144 Boeing 737-800 and the Minicraft Boeing 737-400. I'll be shortening the 400's fuselage and changing the tail. Then, the 800's wings, engines and landing gear will be added. After that's done, I'll go crazy with the plasticard, scratchbuilding the radar array, various aerials, wingtips (not winglets), nose pod, tail pod and a few other goodies!
If anyone wants some pics of the Wedgetail, PM me. I've got a few from the last airshow I was at.
Cheers,
John

Howdy all!! Haven't visited in awhile so I thought I'd check in. Although I kinda wonder if my F6 qualifies. It said unarmed except defensive. The F6 has 4 20MM. Anyway, as I was working on the Accurate kit I was a little disappointed in the fit. I've read how their P.51's were so good but mine has some MAJOR irregularities. I had to wedge the fusulage to make it fit with the wings and even then it needed putty.Where the top of the fuselage meets the canopy was 1/32 short, the intake piece behind the prop was WAY oversized for the fuselage....SIGH.....Oh yeah and the proper windshield had a sprue connector the size of my thumb...well maybe not that big, but too big, total loss.
I'm doing my best to salvage it and make it respectable. Very disappointed though, maybe I just got a lemon.

Hmm, pity about that. It's times like this that I lose my motivation for awhile. Then I come on here, see all the great builds and, Bang! I get it all back!! Big Smile [:D]
