Moto GP group build '05

This is a group build for Motorbikes used in the premier class of Grand prix racing. It's called Moto GP group build, but earlier 500 bikes are also allowed. Anything goes for this GB, Any kit, any scale, any bike, and any detailing you want to do. So far the list of participants is:

Pingtang - Gauloises and Fortuna 'spiderman' Yamaha YZR-M1's;
joelwideqvist - three RC211V's and two '99 NRS500's;
yamafreak72- Gauloises Yamaha YZR-M1 and Rossi valencia RC211V;
seabee - Rossi RC211V
shayne wright - '05 Biaggi RC211V and KR500;
cupcai -
mitchgixer6 - Gauloises YZR-M1;
worgoose -
Andrew Collodel - Fortuna YZR-M1and maybe West RC211V;
archangel571 - '86 Gardener NSR500 and Kawasaki KR500;
simon_U -

Let me know exactly what you'll be building and I'll add it to the list. The GB ends at the end of the year, so we've got plenty of time to finish the builds.

NSR500 '86 Wayne Gardner, Kawasaki KR500 (Both are Tamiya... duh), might add more if time allows. mostly likely a choice between alex criville's 99 nsr500 or rossi's '02 rc211v (saving the '03 rc211v for later when my bike building skills improves more)

I am building the Fortuna M1 ‘04 number 33 of Melandri with the Studio 27 PE parts and I am hoping at least make a start on a WEST RC211V ’02 with Studio 27 decals and PE parts

Okay, so my weekend got me nowhere in this department! I am still contemplating... But at this stage it might very well be an slightly unconvensional (call it a tribute to...) Rossi RC211V.

Otherwise it will be a "normal" '03 RC211V with the S27 detail kit...

Count me in for a Gauloises M-1. Doing Rossi's bike.

Out of the Box apart from the Tabu Decals and the Tamiya Grade up parts for the front forks/camera etc. And of course the odd bit of CF decaling.

Ok, now you all got me thinking as well. What shall it be, what shall it be...?
First I will finish off the three RCV's I started in the RCV Group build. But they are almost finished so I must have something more to do.
I've decided to go back a few years to step away from the RCV mania of the past year.
My list will therefor be topped with the Kanemoto Honda NSR of John Kocinski from 1999 GP500 and the Lucky Strike Honda NSR from the same year ridden by Shinichi Itoh. Itoh rode the bike with wild card in Japaneese GP.
List turns out to be like this;

Camel Honda RC211V '03 (Biaggi 32 version from the qualifying round of the Dutch GP)
Pramac Honda RC211V '03 (Tamada)
Teléfonica Movistar Honda RC211V '03 (Katoh)
Kanemoto Racing Honda NSR500 ´99 (Kocinski)
Lucky Strike Honda NSR500 ´99 (Itoh)

Long list but remember the first three are as good as done.

Thanks SeaBee cannot wait to get started. I am preparing the M1 now and concentrating on the M1 S27 parts. I do not have the "Metal Primer" but will the white Tamiya surface primer be okay?

I will be in Mozambique rest of this week so will catch up again next week

i know the tamiya grey primer is used for both metal and plastic... as for white, i've been looking for them n they are still OUT OF STOCK at so many places.

I need to get some of the white stuff before I start my build too. Can't get any around here, so I'll have to wait til I can get to a better hobby shop.........

Andrew - Those Studio 27 West decals really are very nice. Some of the best decals I've ever used. I hope the Renaissance Spiderman decals are nice, cause that's gonna be a tricky job if they aren't co-operative. Tamiya grey surface primer should do the trick as a metal primer.

Joel- i plan on using Valancia kit not much changed only a few minor adjustments to do on cowling a few different decals to apply which are quite noticeable(Showa decal on swing /and of course the number 3)
havefilledin gaps on swing arm and frame today
p.s. anbody want spare decals for Rossi's Valancia ride?

I'd keep them if I was you. You never know when you'll need another set. I've stuffed a few decals before and wished I had a spare set. I'll take em if you want to give them away mate, but give them to someone who really needs them if you don't want them.

hey guys, anyone know how fine the mesh should be if i want to use that method to paint the carbon kevlar effects on the bikes like those from the Tamiya catalogue? i have a mesh from a 1/35 sdkfz 222 and the old M60A3, but i think those holes are generally too big compared to the pictures.

The ones usually coming with auto models work fine. I have a full compliment of one armor kit in the cupboard and can't remember the mesh size!

don't have a car kit that comes with grilles yet... didn't start the whole rally car collection at all. most of my cars are diecasts. oh well, just try to get around the idea of buying carbon fiber decals. they are just way too overpriced for what they are. haha this is coming out the mouth of an idiot who just spent the past 2 hours on ebay and bought around 20 kits of 1/35 Dragon WWII figures.

I've heard stocking material is good for that. Haven't tried it myself, but I don't see why it shouldn't work. It'd probably be easier to stretch over the part too. Might give it a go one day, maybe on this build. I'll let you know how it goes.

Nylon stocking like Pingtang mentions works good but I think the mesh technique is better. It doesn't have to be from a plastic kit though...just go find some really fine mosqito (?) net and it will be fine.

Can anyone give me a contact for the Renaissance Spiderman decals? I tried Ragged Edge Design but the $35.00 price tag is a bit steep for me, is this the only supplier? I like the stocking idea for replicating the carbon effect since I have not had much success so I just use X18 but will give it another go. Does anyone have some photos of the West Honda RC211V I am short on reference for this bike?

click on Alex Barros as it's his bike that had the WEST sponsership on it Loris's bike was still the 500nsr,then click on mutlimedia then /2002/motogp/any of the last 4-5 races /pictures. There are some some good shot of the bike in ther e any problems give us a yell

Andrew That's about as cheap as you'll find the spriderman decals. You've gotta remember that $35 is australian dollars. Might work out cheaper in your national currency. The decals are worth it but, they look really nice on the sheet. Can't wait to start applying some.

If you go to http://moto.racing-live.com/en/ there is some pics of the West RC211V from '02. If you click on the Photos/grand prix link in the left side menu. Then choose grand prix 2002 on the right. Any of the last 4 or 5 races will have some pics of Barros on the RC211V.

Andrew - Did you check my ref pics page? Not so many pics of the West Livery but a large bunch of the ´02 Repsol RCV where you can find a lot of inspiration.

As I am stupid I couldn't keep my fingers from the two kits that I figured would go into the GB AFTER I have finished the RCV's... Started preping the bodywork and primed the wheels for the Kanemoto bike as they will be white. It's nice to be back at some NSR's for a change.
Thought I'd post images of the bikes for anyone who haven't seen them before. I've spent loads of time to find ref pics for the Lucky Strike bike without success so the pic posted is a from another modellers work.
