Mirror/Mirror my first idea for a group build
Posted by PanzerWulff on Friday, August 19, 2005 11:26 AM
Hallo all I recently had an idea for a GB so here we go.Big Smile [:D] It's a what if ? idea , so what if an aircraft was built and flown by it's opposition? Such as my choice a F4U Corsair as it would be like if built and flown by japan, or possibly a F-15 as a Mig. so heres the criteria
(1) aircraft should be painted, marked as if flown by it's direct opposition (ie) corsair vs zero or Spitfire VS Me 109
(2) external stores, pilots(if used) and other weaponry should be of the appropriate nationality
(3) any scale, era, type (helicopters, fighters, bombers etc) welcome
(4) build to start Sept 1/05-Dec31/06 (to give anyone who may be in other GB plenty of time to join when they wish)
(5) any level of modeling skill welcome
Well i hope people like the idea and i hope to see anyones ideas soon.

P.S. i have no idea on how to do a GB badge so any help is welcome

Note: Replace the ( and ) with [ and ]

hmmm actually I might be interested Panzer, I am in over my head in Group Builds so I might not be able to, but let me take inventory and see... it would be a nice relaxing "different" kinda thing....

well i spent a couple hours yesterday weathering and washing the rest of the interior sections . i'm planning on putting a pilot from my tamiya J2M3-Raiden(Jack) in the pit so i'm gonna work on him next, i'm not sure how much weathering i want to put on the exterior. either just a little to make the aircraft look fairly new or give it the japanese aircraft super flake off look? another decision to make before i go too far heh

Chris - that's the way to make sure it stays up top! I did that with the Midway build, just keep giving updates on YOUR build and people see it and come... I'll see what I have in my inventory and will plan on joining you here!

I think, this GB idea gives more space for improvisation, than just camo. E.g. if You make allied fighter as it would be made by axis manufacturers, why not think of their concepts. Many german fighters had guns in fuselage, why not make Hurricane with DB engine, two guns in cowling and two more in underwing pods? O Messerschmitt with 8 guns in wings? I understand, this involves some (or even lot) of scratchbuilding, but wouldn't it be fun to go beyond simple camo change? Besides, GB will last for more than year.

good ideas moonwoka feel free to use any ideas you like i was actually thinking at 1 point to put 2 machine guns in the cowling of my corsair but my modification skills aren't up to the job instead i will be putting 2 MGs and a 20mm in each wing similar to the J2M3 raiden im also building. BUT TO ALL INTERESTED take your ideas to whatever you would like to see in YOUR model i just put up some guidelines and ideas have fun with it thats what a "what if?" idea is all aboutBig Smile [:D]

Well, I have an Airfix 1/72 Mosquito FB Mk.VI kit, that has progressed as far as gluing both wings together. Yesterday I did some surgery (or better say - amputation) and cut-off upper part of engine nacelle (which is molded with wing) from the port wing. I also caniballized engine nacelle from old Lockheed Ventura kit and tried to dry fit it with Mosquito wing. To make long story shot, I'm planning to participate in this GB with my DH 98 Mosquito -> Nakajima J1N1-Sa "what if". I was thinking tandem cockpit instead of Mosquito's side-by-side, but then I'm not trying to sculpt exact copy of Gekko. So I'm limiting changes to radial engines, two upward firing cannons (schrage musik), different undercarriage legs and longer nose with radar array. Fortunately enough, I have decal sheet with hinomaru's left from horrible Airfix Zero, which looks quite acceptable. So far I'm thinking of simple all-black night-fighter paint scheme.

My another idea for this GB is Republic P-47 -> Reggiane Re.2000. Of course, P-47 is much larger, than Reggiane, but hey, they have same ancestor - Seversky P-35! If I'll get inexpensive P-47 kit, I might give it a try. Imagine this juggernaut armed with just two machine guns in engine cowling Mischief [:-,]

Ok, somoene here messed up. I remember seeing a picture of all-black Gekko, which looked awesome. But I wasn't able to find enything to confirm this scheme. It seems that japanese night fighters were more like black green. Oh well... live and learn.

PanzerWulff, thanks for encouraging Smile [:)]

Moon - I would be tempted to think RLM Schwarzgrun would work... a few of the Japanese colors were VERY close to the RLM colors, either lighter or darker. Put a drop or two of black in some RLM70 and I think you'd have it!!!

BTW: thanks Chris - they found out today their house was ok and no flooding or wind damage (other than a few shingles) and also found out they could make it back in to pick up the rest of their valuables so they left... they will probably be back Monday evening but it gives me a little time to model (and nap haha) so even though it has been great having them here it is also nice to be alone for a bit... I appreciate your thoughts!
