littlemoe,

I have some webspace that we can use to post some pics. There's also a topic somewhere else on the forum that tells you how to insert a pic into your message (it needs to be posted on a website first though.) If you email me your pic, I will put it on the web and send you the address so you can link to it if you want.

It might take me a couple of days to get it done since I'm going to be out of town for a few days soon...

Hey there,

So I've finally decided on the Revell-Monogram 360 Modena Spider kit. I had dug out and looked at my old Testarossa kits (3 of them) but they were all molded in colored plastic so I decided to go with the new kit just to try and eliminate some possible painting headaches. Since I still consider myself a very inexperienced modeller I need to eliminate as many problem situations as I can. :-)
We are actually heading out for the weekend so I won't be starting anything until next week but that will give me some time to think about what color I want to paint it. A flame job would be awesome (I know I'm opening myself up for something there) but that is definitely beyond the scope of my limited abilities at this time. Maybe something like that Ford Purple, I don't know, we'll see.
I don't have a digital camera myself, but I'm going to see if I can track one down to take some in-progress pictures and keep everyone up-to-date with how things are going.
Good Luck everyone and let's have fun!!!

Ray

Helloooo out there....

I decided to bring this topic back to the top. I've been sick this week so I still haven't started but I hope to get going over the weekend maybe. Has anyone else started yet or is this going to turn into a 'solo' project for me? :-)

Hey Ray, (that rhymes...)

I started on mine last night. I've chosen to build the Gunze Sangyo 250 GTO (low tech version). I found it on my shelf this week and realized it would be a good candidate for this project. There are several reviews of the 'high-tech' version of this kit, and apparently it's pretty rare and expensive. The version I have is curbside, and all pieces are plastic (the other has metal components). I'm hoping I can get it done in time to enter in Bridgecon in early May.

I've done a crude build-up of the pieces to check out the ride height and overall fit. Generally, it's got a few challenges. Here's a few thoughts:
- the tires look crappy (kinda like balloon tires). I should get some replacements, but I think I'm gonna build it the way it is first, and if it turns out looking really nice, I can get some resin tires and put them on later. (Besides, for CBP I think we agreed to use out-of-box components/parts).
- the kit uses the same pieces as the 'high tech' kit (but just less of them). Therefore, there are lots of little mounting holes and other things that get left 'open', because the kit I have doesn't provide those pieces. An example is the rear shocks: mounting spots for them, just not included in the kit. I'm gonna have to fill lots of little things like this.
- The body itself is really nice. The plastic is quite brittle, but has very few seam marks or imperfections. I was able to clean it up pretty quickly. (Hopefully first coat of primer will go on tonight...)
- The side vents (on the front fenders) are see through, and unfortunately you can see the pieces of the interior 'tub' through the vents when the kit is assembled. I don't think the real thing would have looked this way, so I'm gonna have to find a way to block out the distraction. Need some more reference pics first, though.
- The kit glass is quite thick and not the best I've seen. I'm going to experiment with some clear sheet and see if I can make something that looks thinner/better.
- The wheels are molded in 'chrome' and look very well done to me. A little bit of a wash in the recesses of the 'spokes' and I think they'll look really good.
- the only other thing is that the interior door panels have a large oblong 'hole' in them?? I'm not sure if this is the way the real thing is or not. More ref. pics required.

Haven't determined the color yet, but my original hope was 'yellow'. Unfortunately, I'm not sure whether or not they ever made a 250 GTO in yellow or not. I've seen some blue/yellow, black, and red (of course) ones in various ref. pics, but so far no yellow.

Will try to get some pics up shortly.

Cool, things are starting to move here.

I'm going to try and get going on mine tonight. I popped the box and had a quick look at the kit. The once-over looked pretty good. The parts count is toward the lower end of the scale, 69, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Less parts, hopefully means that it will be easier to complete within the month.;-) Anyway, it comes with a little bit of screen for the vents and inside the rollbars, which is a nice touch. The windshield, tires, and sprues were all bagged separately too, which I always appreciate. The detail all looks very clear and crisp and its molded in a nice white plastic. All in all, it looks like a very good kit. Well, I guess I better get building instead of hanging around here. I'll keep y'all posted on my progress.

Hi guys,

Been following your discussion for a while without interfering, but that's just bacause I needed a break after building 12 kits and painting 21 figures (admitedly 1/72 ones!) in 10 days! I'm back now, and instead of the F40 I had previously picked up, I've just found an Italeri Ferrari GTO (1984 model) that's quite pretty. Started it yesterday, and I've just sprayed the primer. The red plastic of the body is very thin, and quite translucent, though... With the white primer, I have a slightly pinkish model so far, and I have thought of painting my new Ferrari in Pink... Why not?

Little moe, I've built that Mythos. It's a beautiful kit..! Mine was painted white, with the inside in black. Lovely.

My first pics will be out soon.

Wow!!! I haven't done that many kits in the last 10 YEARS.Blush [:I] Hopefully these CBPs and my involvement with the local club will improve that record, as I'm sure it will.

Well, I pulled out my kit last night and did some preliminary work. The kit is pretty good but it does have a few mold lines that will need to be sanded and/or filled. Other than that though it looks good, and if I can decide on a color it should be pretty straight-forward.

I know what you mean abouty those pesky mold lines, Ray... On my GTO's body, they were well 'hidden' and it took some time to get rid of them all...

I'll tell you what....... This is my FIRST Tamiya kit..... and man I'm impressed!!!!!! I realize this is just a simple kit, but the fit and finsh is excellent as well as the molding itself........ now i know why these kits are a bit more money then your standard Revell/amt Etc... kits are!!!!

I just got done washing all the parts, so after they dry, i will start painting and sub assembling.........

Later.........

Hey guys,

Been away from the board for a few days and it's nice to see the 'chatter' up here in the CBP.

I started on my 250 GTO and as Murphy predicted, there were problems. I put a coat of Duplicolor primer on the body and it started to 'craze' like crazy! Ooohhh!! I was excited!! Anyways, I exercised patience (very uncommon for me) and just let it dry the way it was. Several hours of sanding and filling brought it back to good shape. Not wanting a repeat, I got some Plasticote primer (which I've heard is the be-all and end-all of primers) and gave that a shot. But, before I did, I tried in on some of the other kit pieces for a test. The tests looked good, so away I went on the body. Hello.... is Murphy still hanging around? Is it April fools yet?? It crazed AGAIN!! Several bad words were heard throughout the neighborhood, but again I exercised my patience, let it dry, and sanded back to a smooth surface. The crazing wasn't as 'bad' as it was with the Duplicolor, but it definitely was there.

So, at this point I was very nervous, as you can probably understand. Why would the body craze, but the other kit parts would not. All parts were washed and prepped thoroughly so there shouldn't be a problem?? Well, the only thing I can think of is that the plastic they used on the body is different than the rest of the kit. The body is much more 'brittle' and seems more shiny than the other kit parts. Obviously, it doesn't react well to either type of spray primer that I tried.

So, I decided to test out a bit of Mr. Surfacer 1000. I brushed some on the body and it looked good. No crazing. Put some in the airbrush and sprayed it on. It WORKED! Nice smooth finish and it even filled some of the minor scratches that I didn't take care of prior to spraying. That was a nice feeling.

Last night I put the RED on the body and now it is in the process of curing. I was going to do Yellow, but I couldn't find any ref. pics of a 250 GTO in Yellow. Red seemed to be the obvious choice.

I'm going on to the chassis construction this week. I still haven't posted the pics I took, but I'll probably have some time tonight to get them up.

littlemoe,

I sent you a seperate email, but if you want to send me your pic to my email address, I'll put it in some webspace and give you the address. Then you can post it in the forum here.

This goes for anyone that may also need some space for hosting some pics for the CBP.

OOH!!! This picture stuff is fun!!

Littlemoe,

If you saw 'crazing' you'd know it. Basically, it's where the paint attacks the styrene and causes it to 'melt'. Usually happens with really hot paints such as lacquers. If you want to see for yourself, take a scrap part and put a bit of lacquer thinner on it. What you will witness is 'crazing'.

Basically it makes the plastic look sorta like alligator skin with all kinds of grooves and pits all over it. It can be shallow, or really deep (depending on how hot the paint is.)

Well, I finally started a little painting on the engine today. Boy, can first impressions be wrong. The fit on the enging is horrible. And there's only 4 pieces to it. I hope that's not an indication of things to come. I did dry-fit the body and that seems to be ok. There is a bit of a gap on the one corner but overall it seems to fit ok. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to wait a few more days before I can start priming and painting the body. Since I don't have a paint booth yet(in the process of building one) I was hoping to just paint outside. Well...the weather was just starting to warm up nicely when Mother Nature sends us a snow storm!! That's right, the joys of living in Canada! :-) Anyway, I'm going to try to get my paint booth built this weekend and hopefully I can start painting next week.

Now i know the Mythos was a concept car, and was ONLY done in red,and I also now that I have full artistic control over myprojects, but would it be im-moral to paint this concept car something other then red???

littlemoe, the color is completely up to you. Myself, I'm going to paint mine some custom color that I still have not decided on. :-) Anyway, Ferrari's are available in 18 different colors from the factory.(Something I did not know) As far as the interior, Scale Auto mag had an article on interiors in their last(current) issue. You should be able to pull some ideas from that. Also, just mixing various shades of the same color even can really make a big difference. Dry-brushing some of the dash detail helps a lot too. I'm kind of in the same boat as you are with my spider too. As I get going we'll have to swap some more ideas. I'll let you know what I do as I go along.

littlemoe,
- The guidelines of the CBP say no aftermarket stuff, but you should build it the way you want. A hose here and there isn't going to offend too many people here. Especially if you have fun, share the results and encourage others to participate in the CBPs.
- my technique isn't perfect, but I replicate leather by spraying flat paint, letting it dry, then buffing it with my finger. This gives a bit of 'sheen' to the flat paint and satisfies me.
- I think Ray's advice on adjusting the shade of the paints is pretty good. This creates lots of subtle highlights that look nice.
- If you've got some 5 min epoxy, mix some up and try not to get any 'bubbles' in it. Apply some to the instrument faces and let it dry. It will dry clear and look very much like 'glass' on the instruments. Another alternative is to just coat the instruments with a heavy coat of Future.
- the plastic 'vents' are usually more glossy than the rest of the dash.
- see if you can get some ref. pics of the dash you're replicating. This will give you ideas where to apply different colors, etc.

Well, there's.. me..! (did not complete (yet) the first assignment (1/48 F-18), though, but the Ferrari project is going well, and I've just painted the car and I now need to varnish it and buff it).
