F-15 Eagle Group Build 6/01/06 - 1/17/07
Posted by Zone V Afterburner on Monday, May 29, 2006 4:50 PM

 Brakes released.....full afterburner.......cleared for a Viking departure!!

F-15 Group Build:

              June 1,2006-January 17,2007

January 17,1991 marks the first U.S.A. air-to-air kill by an F-15 in wartime combat.

(F-15C vs. Iraqi MiG-29)

Group Build Rules:

Any F-15

Any variant, any nation or time frame.Actual documented aircraft only.

Any scale

Aftermarket items ( such as photo-etch,resin cockpits, decals) and scratchbuilding allowed and encouraged!

Please keep everyone posted of your progress and submit pics, if at all possible. The most encouraging thing (to me at least) is to get to see everyones work and hear about the ups and downs of their project in progress and how they might do things differently next time. But the main rule is to enjoy yourself!

Is everyone else ready?

Thanks Mike....  I figured I probably should hang on to her after our first date.I took her to see the Thunderbirds practice and from then on she kept bugging me about going to an airshow.Another factor was that after she seen my stash, one of the first things she asked me is if I would show her how to build a model.Anyhoo....Whistling [:-^]...enough of the mushy stuff... I'm ready to paint my hand and glue my fingers together! LOL!!

Thanks for the congrats Willuride and Jerry.

Yeah Jerry, I know what you mean about the box.Whenever I put my Revell boxes on the shelf I always put them on the top layer because of that very problem. The car kits are just as bad.I have had to rebox several of them.

I have decided to go ahead and build the Tamiya 1/32 Mud Hen.I'm not sure where it will go when it's done but..... AnyhooWhistling [:-^],I have a few aftermarket things I am going to throw at it,so hopefully it will turn out ok.Any of you other guys going to use aftermarket stuff?  I gotta tell ya though, that I am wringing my hands in excitement! Are we the only 4 that are this interested in getting started? (crickets chirping) LOL

Sweet, and off we go.  Oh yea, the screenname is archangel571 (571 is from that movie U571, I started using it in highschool after the movie came out.  in order to avoid names being taken and start my own unique series of recognizable names, i added 571 to every screenname or log-in I used when I registered for them.), and the academy F-15D kit is 1/48 scale.

Looking forward to see your build progress pix for that 1/32 Tamiya F-15E, zone V.  That will help me decide whether or not to sell my 1/32 F-15C.  It just looks too sweet to be sold along with the 1/32 F-14A 1994 ver.

My apologies about your screen name Ryan. It's fixed though.

Yeah, after I dug out my 32nd 'E' and was checking out the Black Box cockpit that I bought for it,my mind was made up.But I'm also looking forward to seeing your build. Will you be able to post pics?

After Market?....After close inspection of the kit cockpit, I decided to order the Aires set. The kit parts are'nt bad, but the Aires set is impressive. I'm also going to use Verlinden avionics bays. This should keep me busy. Can't wait!

I have that Aires cockpit ....man it's really purrty! LOL!! You going to open the radome also Jerry? That is the main reason I decided to go with 1/32. I didn't want to build my '48 and leave half of the eye candy off of it.But I didn't want to break up of the sexy lines of the a/c either.I guess thats a darn good reason to go buy another '48.

LQQks like Jimmy is going to cook up something really interesting for all of us...

OK guys.......I can't take it anymore!!!   Ooooh the humanity of it all!!!

Is it cheating if I start working on the bang seats tonight instead waiting till tomorrow?!?

I know what you mean guys, and I fess up. Although I'm going to use the Aires CP, I couldn't resist and I've painted the kit pit just for fun. That's not really cheating, is it? The reality is, the kit parts are pretty decent, including the seats. I'm going to try something unusual to replicate the CRT's and am anxious to see how it'll look.

I think I've decided not to open the radome. The parts appear to be very well done, but I personally like the looks of a finished model with it closed. Besides....I have my hands full with wiring the avionics bays. :D

Cheers,

Jerry

Well....I'm still waiting on the Aires cockpit, and as I said I couldn't resist painting up the kit pit. The kit parts are really pretty decent. What I wanted to experiment with was using a transparent prism ribbon for the CRT screens. This stuff actually changes color as you rotate it to a light source. Purple, red, green, gold.....you name it. I don't know how accurate it is, but it looks kinda cool. The ribbon is translucent and I applied it over a base coat of black. The dominent colors though, are green/black. I don't know if I'm going to use this stuff on the actual model yet. I would be more carefull to get a better fit if I decided to use it. Guess I kinda rushed it.

What do you guys think?

Jerry, that looks real good.  I still haven't started as I am trying to get over this never ending 67 Chevelle.  I am so wore out with this car, but I can't set it down as it is not for me.  I am so stoked to get my F-15's started.  I am using the Aires exhaust set on the E, and the kit parts I think I am going to try and make resin copies of for the rest of my C's and the D will probably be OOB.  I am tinkering with the idea of getting at least seats for 6 of them.  We'll see if I have the funds.  I am also thinking of making copies of the ordinance I have, We'll see.  Well here are a few pics of the "E" at the Andrews air show this year.

That second picture is awesome Jerry.I seen someone over at ARC building the Academy 1/32 Hornet that had a similiar set-up on his CRT screens.I e-mailed him asking what he used but I never got a response.I think you might have exposed his secret.I like your idea, because it gives the cockpit some 'gotcha' factor without to much work.I want to make my screens look a little more interesting than just basic black.Do you mind if I try out this idea on my 1/32 'E'?.I try not to be a copycat on other peoples detailing techniques but that ribbon really makes the CRT's leap out at you.Cool stuff no doubt.Did you pick up that ribbon at some party store?

As for me.....I'm working on the bang seats myself.I spent most of the day modifying the Black Box seats that came with the 'E' pit. There was some sorta box molded to the left side of the seat that I couldn't find in any of my reference pic's,so off they went.I also had to modify some canopy breakers from the Tamiya seats to fit the BB seats,as BB did not supply them. The canopy breaker is the sharp object at the top of the seat. Here's a pic of one:

 Loading...

Right now I'm waiting for my primer coat to dry and I have a little sanding to do and then I will shoot my flat black and begin the detail painting.I will try to post pics either tonight or tomorrow.

Those are some nice pics there Will.I guess we were posting at the same time....how much more work on the Chevelle before your done?

What's everyone else up too?

Go ahead and give it a shot. I saw this stuff at a Hallmark store and the old light bulb came on. This stuff is really wierd. The difference in light reflection makes this stuff go crazy. From some angles, it's black, then red, then green....you get the idea.

You can buy this stuff by the roll...but I figured there's plenty of material in a bow. $1.79

Cheers,

Jerry

I have to paint the black stripes around the outside slap the windows in, squeeze it together, paint the grille and rear black, and put the accessories in the engine bay.  Then I'll be done, I should have it done by Saturday, and maybe I can start my planes on Sunday eve. or Monday.  Either way I believe I will at least start on Monday.
