Thanks Scot....it is Scot isn't it? I used alot of different metal paints on the exhausts, but alas, mostly Alclad.

Your progress is lookin real good, and I can relate to the dry fitting. It's a real juggling match with a resin avionics bay, bulkheads, and cockpit, not to mention the wheel bay is suppose to be glued to the tub.I had to remove a lot of material from the tub and walls to get it all lined up.For some reason I can't figure out, I couldn't get the side walls to extend all the way up and under the fuse. lip. If I would have attatched the walls to the sides first, there would have been a tiny gap with the tub. I chose to glue the walls to the tub first and the gap can't show cause it's up and under out of vision. Also, the avionics bulkhead interfered with the front instrument panel. I had to do some surgery there as well, but alas, it's all closed up and ready for paint.

Keep posting pics guys!

Hey a little late but here I am.

So this is my second model and I've just started it. My first is an A380 that there is pics of in the aircraft fora. That thread is how I ended up here, thanks for the invite Zone!

So I have just started the Tamiya 1/32 with Bunker Busters. This kit will be built strictly from the box. Man two kids+summer+job=no time. I started last week and here is where I'm at now.

It needs more work. I am brushing Tamiya paints and I'm finding them hard to get a nice finish with. So I'm still learning the ropes there. I'm thining with Tamiya thinner. I keep painting one colour, get a few oopsies, and paint the other colour to fix, and going back and forth. This is not finished by any means, I just thought I'd show where I was after just joining this GB. Smile [:)]

Oh my other problem currently is I need a compressor for my AB. I was going to get one this week but the car had problems as well as I decided to get new tires with my extra money. So it's pushed back to the middle of the month paycheque next month. Once I'm done the pit that's it for me pretty much untill I get that.

Edit: I think I'm going to make things a little more correct. I took some liberties and just addes a red button here or there what have you. Engines are more my thing...

Well...I don't know about advice, but here's a pic of my masking. The Aires CP has protrusions that were a little tedious, but you just have to get everything covered the best you can.

Just looking at those gorgeous cockpits makes me envious for a 1/32 model or resin cockpits. Ashamed [*^_^*] But I have to work with what I've got.

The worst part of the 1/48 Tamiya is the intakes. I had to use a huge amount of filler and even more amounts of sanding and sandpaper just to make them look right.

The gun port is a terrible mold design so I filled that up and sculpted a better gun port.

FYI, my plane is brush-painted. Here's how the first few layers go on:

Here's how the paint should look like after about 4 coats:

My experience is using the widest brush is not the right thing to do when brush painting a plane. I used a 1/2 inch flat brush, dabbing the paint on a rag before applying the paint stroke. I don't overlap my paint strokes either. Using Tamiya thinner in the paint in a 50-50 ratio is a good starting point for the right consistency.

I have painted the inner intakes a darker gray to simulate shadow on the final model later on. The white in the gear bays is just the white primer. I hate painting white so I just used the spray-on primer.

Wow!...your brush painting looks better than some air brush work I've seen. Nice job!!

Jerry

P.S.  Looks like we finally have a little activity on this GB

Well, I am slowly plugging away at #4 still.  I didn't get to scribe them at work like I had hoped.  I had pneumonia last week and didn't get anything done, but I'm back baby!!  I will be working tediously to finish the bottom of #4 and start #5.  It is going faster than I had expected so I should be done with all 5 main bodies this week.  I can't wait.  When I get that done I have to finish up the 67 Chevelle.  I have everthing to finish it, then it will be nothing but F-15's.  I'll post pics when I get #5 done.  Happy modelling.

and yet another noobish question..
Posted by Cpt.Sponder on Monday, July 31, 2006 2:40 AM

hee peeps,

as you all know, im still building my first plane, and i am now at a stage where i dont know how to proceed. :(

ive got the cockpit masked off, ready for paint, but here's the thing: should i paint and decall it before or after i glued it onto the plane?

if i pre-paint it, and glue afterwards, how do you get rid of the seam without damaging the paint/decals?

if i glue it first, how can you paint the cockpit completely? the airintakes are in front of it, and some decals go behind the airintakes as well.

so either way i will run into a problem. can you please shed a little light on how i should proceed?

cheers! Sponder.

allthough there doesn't seem to be a lot of activity here, i thought i'd post an update:

i glued the forward fusselage in place, and gave the complete model another layer of paint.

Next up will be pre-shading, and finishing off the paintjob. once this is done its time for the decals and the detail pieces (landing gear etc.)

progress is slow, but were getting there!

I know what you mean about "crazy ride"...  Being in Construction, the summer months are busy for work.  That and all of the outdoor activities that take up your time.

But I have been able to slowly make progress on my pair of F-15As.  I am doing the pair that were the first responders on 9/11 (Mass. Air Guard).  The only problem that I have run into is that I need a pair of wing mounted external fuel tanks, with pylons.  The missle load on both planes I know I can get from Hasegawa.  Anyone knows where I might find some after-market?  The 'procurement officer' here at the 'air base' won't authorize the purchase of two new kits.  Outside of this problem, the pair of F-15s are looking pretty good.  Will post some photos after decaling is completed.

Currently working on my intakes for the Tamiya kit. Sanded off the ejector pin marks, tonight I glue the two haves together and go to work on the seam that will be left. I'm not sure how I'm going to get at the middle part. I intend to use Squadron white putty. I sure am open to any ideas or tips...

Sorry for the long absence guys.....Rudy you are MORE then welcome to join.I apologize for not getting back quick enough.I have been real busy here lately.I am still working on the cockpit, and I'm getting to the point that it is bogging me down.I think I am going to take a break from the cockpit and begin building some other sub-assemblies,like the intakes, landing gear and such.I will try to post pics of what I have completed so far in the next couple of days.I have both the front and rear 'offices' more or less complete.I am now in the process of trying to get everything to fit inside the fuselage halves. This involves alot of trial fitting, followed by sanding, followed by trial fitting, followed by more sanding. It's a long arduous process....but I'm getting there.Anyhoo... glad everyone is still working on their Eagle's.I think  Jerry pretty much has his close to being wrapped up.And it looks good too of course!  Take care guys! Later on....

If it is ok with zone, and I think that it will be, I am going to add the old Revell 1/48 F-15C kit to the list for my builds.  This kit doesnt look too bad, however I will be adding the Eduard zoom PE set and a Verlinden bang seat to the build.  This should help to keep me busy during the long weekend while I am here at Ft Rucker.

Of Course it's OK! This thread is moving kinda slow anyway... Summer makes it hard for all of us to get any workbench time.I know it is for me anyway. But I (GASP!) DO have some progress to report! LOL!  I've been chugging away on the WSO's 'pit for a while now,and I think I have gotten it to an acceptable level (for me anyway....I am my worst critic) Anyhoo..here are a few pics of the WSO's office.

I scratchbuilt a few items on the panel similiar to the pilots I/P.The only difference is that on the far right of the WSO's panel next to the Data Entry Panel (with the dark clear red stripes) there is an ejection sequencing panel. It has a yellow and black striped handle. This item turns counter clockwise to two positions. The position it's in right now is the 'normal' position. One click to the left sets up a 'solo' ejection, and then one more click to the left is the 'aft initiate' position. The way it is presented on my panel I will assume is the most often seen or used position.

Tonight I will post pics of the Cutting Edge seamless intake set-up,how it works and how it is installed, and the small modifications I did.Take care.....

Thanks Jerry for the comments.....I have to humble myself though because I made many mistakes and used enough superglue to fog up the windows on the house! I havn't built a model in over 10 (?) years...But I have to admit that had I not frequented this and other forums and still be buying copies of Finescale and other magazines, I would be totally lost and have to start re-learning things.I still have so much to learn, but alot of the work you do and others inspires me to drive on, and not let this thing intimidate me.Take care...

Lookin great Zone!

I haven't done much on my birds as of late.  Just started the Apache course, so I've been studying and flying a LOT.  Here's my three birds so far:

From left to right they are the Revell F-15E, Hasegawa F-15D/DJ and Hasegawa F-15C.  Markings will be Lakenheath for both 2-seaters and I'm actually building the C as an MSIP'd A model so I can put it in Twobobs' Katrina Relief LA Guard markings.

Now to find the time to finish them!
