Farewell F-14 Tomcat Group Build - Start now, ends 12/31/07
Posted by mph34 on Saturday, September 23, 2006 6:07 PM

The past few months, several Military Air magazines have been talking about the phase out of the F-14 from the US Navy. Sad [:(]  Then in today's USA Today there was an article about today being the last day of flight operations for the F-14. Sad [:(]   I have been thinking that a GB for this great plane was needed.  Smile [:)]

Anyone else think so Question [?]

This would be my first time getting a GB started, so more experienced GB hosts' help is welcomed.

Is there any interest out there for a GB like this?

I say, start the GB now, and give everyone a year to complete (9/23/07).

NEW END DATE HAS BEEN MOVED BACK TO 12-31-07

RULES: Any scale - Any squadron - OOB or any/all add-ons. Smile [:)]  Any squadron that flew the F-14 (even the NASA test plane) Big Smile [:D]  BUT.... I would like to see some "What If's" here as well Big Smile [:D] Cool [8D] (USMC use (was a possiblity at one time), IDF (they did consider buying), another nation (didn't Great Britian look at buying?))  Someone want to try an Iranian F-14 here?

Is there someone who could do a GB badge? Blush [:I]

Some have asked, so YES - Using a plane from another GB is welecomed (as long as that GB is cool about it as well)! Cool [8D]

I've got two of those kits myself ready to be built; and  I have built one in the past as well.  A fine kit.  Builds great just out of the box; but with some aftermarket details, that kit would be extra special.

I'll put you on the list! Big Smile [:D]

Welcome aboard!  Smile [:)]

Are you really a serious modeler if you don't have at least 4+ kits going at once? Big Smile [:D]

As you will see, I am planing on having this stretch out for a year.  I too have several GB's going on.....

I just noticed the thing about the whiffs. Don't worry, you'll see one hell of a Tomcat come for my workbench!

I am currently building Hasegawa's 1/72 F-14A kit in VF-84 markings for the Jolly Rogers group build.  Can I double dip?  Although I am burried at work right now, once things back off, I might try to get my original Tamiya 1/32 scale kit built with VF-142 markings.  I too hate to see the Tomcat removed from fleet service, especially as a former carrier sailor.  The thought of superbugs protecting me would probably cause some sleepless nights. I'll add you to the list.  Look forward to seeing the finished plane.  Didn't the Jolly Rogers have one of the more colorfull 'last flight' desgins for the F-14?

If she is up to it (i.e. you let her), have her paint an F-14 with some graphic design (think of one of those crazy designs that British Airways puts on some of their plane tails) Shock [:O]Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]Evil [}:)]Big Smile [:D]Cool [8D]Alien [alien]

I was wondering how long it would take for others from the Jolly Roger's group build to join in on this group as well.  With my current work schedule, I am not getting much of anything accomplished with my construction, but we should be on some reduced hours in the next week or two.  Just so you know mph34, minihasek's girlfriend designed the badge for the JR group, os I am looking forward to what she comes up with for this build.

Hi, I'd like to join this GB if that's OK.  It'll be with the Revell F-14A 1/48 Tomcat.  I know Revell do a really nice Tomcat, but this one must be an older one or something, as it's a bit of a pig.  Oh, yes, hope this is OK, but I've already done a little (I'll show pics as to what I've already done).

Since it's a nice long lead time to the finish, put me in for a 1/72 Hasegawa IIAF F-14 in pre-turnover US markings...  Should be interesting to say the least.  Pre-turnover = 3 tone desert camo with US markings.  I knew those old "F-14 Tomcat In Action" books would come in handy... Big Smile [:D]

actually my gf designed the badge that lost out to the one we're using everybody thought it was great but the general concensius was that we wanted the full bones but it did look great. shes haveing a bad day due to her friend being killed in iraq about a week ago...today was the funeral...but shes very excited about doing this badge...and she even wants to take mph's suggestion and design a f-14 paint scheme to look to say if a private investor bought one...well see.

minihasek,

Sorry about the mistake on the badge, it figures that I would confuse who submitted the winning entry.  Anyway, the one that your girlfriend drew up was fantastic, and it was a very tough choice between the two.  Please pass along my condolences over the loss of her friend as I know the difficulties in losing someone close that is young, so give her your support and be patient.

How is your girlfriend doing on the badge?  NO RUSH!

How is everyone doing on their plane?  Admittedly, I am not doing to much on mine...Whistling [:-^] Ashamed [*^_^*]  I need to finish up some other Group Builds first.  I know that January 1st Party [party] is still two + months away, but one of my resolutions for the New Year is to limit myself to only 4 or 5 Group Builds per year....
