USAF 60th Anniversary Group Build--(non-aircraft subjects allowed)
Posted by cdclukey on Tuesday, November 28, 2006 1:16 AM

My beloved USAF will turn 60 soon, so I'm launching a group build to commemorate the event. Here are the rules:

1. Build period is January 1, 2007 to September 18, 2007, the actual USAF birthdate.

2. Though aircraft are obviously going to be the bulk of the subjects, any model that can be reasonably connected to the Air Force is eligible. Figures, Air Force ground vehicles, missiles, space vehicles that are owned by AF Space Command, NASA vehicles that were crewed by Air Force personnel, all are eligible. Heck, why not build one of the NASCAR cars or trucks that have carried the Air Force sponsorship?

3. Air Force era models only, please. In other words, nothing from prior to 1947.

4. Guard and Reserve subjects are eligible.

5. Use any aftermarket stuff you want.

6. This group build is dedicated to the memory of Captain Derek Argel, USAF, killed in action in Iraq on Memorial Day, 2005. Derek was a combat controller, a husband and the father of a one year old son, a recipient of the Bronze Star and a hero proved in liberating strife. He was 28 years old, and was laid to rest at Arlington.

That's all I can think of. Who's with me? I'll get the list started:

Cdclukey-- Revellogram F-106 in 1/48.

mph34-- TF-15 Bicentennial

espins1-- 1/72 F-89 Scorpion

Mr. Chex-- still deciding

Pruz-- Revell B-1 in 1/48 COMPLETED

Doom Grr-- Revell A-10 in 1/48

yardbird-- Monogram 1/48 F-84F (Indiana ANG)--COMPLETED

williamsfw28-- F-16

usaf ssgt-- F-82 Twin Mustang

Toother1321-- RC-135M

R-CMan73--E-3 AWACS--COMPLETED 3/8/07

roadkill_275--Revellogram F-106 with surprise markings

Avus--1/35 Pave Hawk diorama

Texgal45--Revell 1/72 F-89 Scorpion (N. Dakota ANG)--COMPLETED 3/20/07

FlyNavy1958--F-102A Delta Dagger

nebrnative--KC-135R (Nebraska ANG)

Chrisr--1/48 Revell F-15e Strike Eagle

RuddRatt--Still deciding

UPDATE: 11 FEB

Here's my pathetic attempt at a group badge. Hopefully one of y'all can do better then this...but at least it's simple:

UPDATE: 20 September

After seeing photos of my model, Debbie Argel, Derek's mother, sent me the following. I'm sure it applies to you gentlemen as well:

"I am sorry I have not been up for awhile. Just returned from DC yesterday talking to members of Congress, viewing the beautiful Air Force Memorial, and visiting Arlington. 500 families from Families United For Our Troops and Vets for Freedom, made a statement. It was a wonderful gathering. It is so nice to come home to this beautiful tribute to Derek. God bless and thanks!"

Keep posting your models as you finish them, and be sure to have fun!

You've got a nice long time frame for the build, Smile [:)] so add me to the list!  Put me down for a TF-15 'Bicentennial' (unless it gets voted on for the "In My Stash GB") Wink [;)]

Count me in, I'll either build my B-47E, F-84E, F-84F or F-89D for this build.  I'll dig through my kits and see which one I'm in the mood for.  Cool [8D]

I would like to contribute a Revell 1/48 B-1B BOne.

The kit will be finished by 9/18/07. The garage extension to keep it in will take a bit longer!!

Cheers,

Al

Beauty! Welcome aboard Alan! Don't worry, only the plane has to be finished ny the AF birthday, you can take as long as you want on the garage. :-) Got my F-106 for Christmas...looks good. I'm going to build the late version that flew out of Castle AFB. Very colorful. Looks like I'm building the missile bay doors closed, too; I'm not liking the missiles in the kit very much.

Hey, this looks fun. I'm in with a Revell 1/48 A-10 Warthog. I'm almost done building my F-106. It's and okay kit, but the nose cone gave me hell. I kept the bomb bay closed, too. Kinda intimidated me. All I have left to do on it is airbrushing, which I might start today or tomorrow.
Nuts!

What kind of AF group build would turn away someone who wore the blue suit for 21 years? Big Smile [:D] Welcome aboard!

BTW, what did you do? I was a KC-135 crew chief from Sept. '89-Jan. '94.

I was a 42751 Corrosion Control Specialist.

Fancy AF way of saying I worked in the paint shop, painting airplanes.

I know the outside of an RF-4C PhantomII, like the back of my hand.

Now I'm recosidering: is it allowed to join with a build from another GB?
I'm "working" ona a Pavehawk-Dio for the H-60 GB. I could join with this model; maybe two GBs for the same build will be a bigger kick in the ...

I have been working on a pair of 1/48 Monogram F-84F's, one for the Rev-Mono GB and another one for this GB.  I got the Rev-Mono one done for the Illinois ANG and have the second one in the decal stage for the Indiana ANG at Ft Wayne.  I have to add the red bars to the national insignia along with a few other of the smaller decals.  Decals are from Aeromaster and the paint is Model Master enamel.  A couple of progress shots.

I just finished my second 1/48 Monogram F-84F Thunderstreak.  This one has the markings of the 122 Fighter Interceptor Wing, 163 Fighter Interceptor Squadron, The Blacksnakes based at Ft Wayne, Indiana.  The decals are by Aeromaster and the paint is Model Master Aluminum Plate.
