Support GB
Posted by rubaru on Friday, August 17, 2007 12:41 PM

Tell me what you guys think of this idea for a GB...

Let's put together some models of all the behind the scenes support groups.  Like the ground crew at an airfield.  Or on the deck of an aircraft carrier.  Maybe the mechanics at a tank factory.  What about an Army hospital?

The key here is this...I don't want to see the airplanes or the tanks or any of the actual fighting vehicles.  Just the support crew and equipment.  You can definitely put in figures or even make it a diorama.

I'm doing this for some of my family members.  Several of them participated in war overseas, but they never actually SAW the action.  It was always the pilots and the infantry who went out to meet the enemy.  I want to honor those who supported them.

Well considering that most of the armed forces is the "tail" that supports the combat arms "teeth" this gives a huge amount of possibilities. Transportation, supply, ordinance, communications, medical, MPs... Jeeps, trucks, wreckers, tugs...

F is for FIRE, That burns down the whole town!

U is for URANIUM... BOMBS!

N is for NO SURVIVORS...

Reminds me of the movie 12 O'clock High, when the ground personnel were playing baseball, or standing by thier jeeps / ambulances, but always had an eye on the sky looking for the returning bombers.

Nice Idea.

You're right...so maybe I should narrow it down a bit?  Perhaps we could limit it to flight deck only...or medical stuff only.

If I get more responses I might have to make this GB official.  However, I'd like to see some more ideas on what people want to build so I can make the decision on how best to do it.

Intriguing concept. But you could still see halftracks, trucks and light armor in support roles. In German WWII stuff, for example, you'd see Panzer Is and IIs in support functions during a particular timeframe.

But if I read you correctly, this would be more of a figure / diorama kind of build? I wouldn't be able to get started on it any time soon, but it would be cool to do a dio of the scene in Saving Private Ryan (or one like it), in which we see a big office filled with rows of civilian women, steadily punching on old typrewriters, with stacks of paper all around them, and a smaller office up front with 4 or 5 older or disabled Army officers discussing whatever.

Something like that.

What would the badge look like?

As for the badge, I was thinking of shrinking down part of a Rosie the Riveter poster and signing it on the side with Support GB '07 or something.  I'm looking around the internet for some nice pics, so I'll keep you posted.

Did we ever decide to do something with this?

Not yet.  My new baby turned out to be colicky and that has kept me away from the bench for a while.  Looks like this might turn into Support GB '08

In that case, congratulations on your new 1:1! Sorry to hear about the colic, but I understand it generally passes in pretty short order, and the baby will be more comfortable.

Whenever you do get back to the Support GB idea, be sure to post it in the Armor forum (or shoot me a PM). It's a solid idea.

Hey congradulations on the baby. Im totally interested in this topic. My Great Opa was a forensics guy during the war and I know I have other relatives who served also.

No rush on starting just putting my name down if this goes up. Im thinking of maybe an Opel ambulance in a dio with some German medic maybe adding a field hospital carrying a stretcher with wounded inside. I dunno yet Ill wait till this is for sure before deciding but Im interested.

My real name is Cam. Interest: anything 1/72, right now mostly sci-fi and modern In progress: 1/72 Sci-fi diorama (link in my web) 1/72 Leopard 2A5 1/72 APC Conversion to a MEGA DESTROYER

Armorama has a group build that started MEDIC! which is for (surprise!) medical support vehicles... I need to finish 14 kits before I sign up for any more GBs... :)
