s.W.s & 3.7cm Flak 43
Posted by spacepacker on Friday, March 13, 2009 7:38 PM

I should have posted these pics two weeks ago but I mislaid my camera, however here goes;

About the kit; it's a Revell 1:35 kit.

The most frustrating build I have ever done,

1) the tracks are made up of fixed length and individuals, try as I might I could not get the 'sag' to be as I wanted; give me 'Indys' any day.

The numbering of the component parts is dreadful,ie:you would expect No 42 to be next to No 43 but NO it was the other side of the runner.

2)Some of the parts are designed to be put together as moving links and I went to all that trouble, only to find that when placed into the main Assembly they were 'locked'.  Even the gun elevation is locked, however this not a difficult mod' to do  which I will do and fit the gun sights.

3) I had to drill the holes in the muzzle brake.

However the plastic is good quality, the fit of all parts is good, the instructions are good, quite a few pin marks to clean up.

Built OOB, I did give a shout for some help on this, and of course several of you did help.

Thank you very much...Kenny

WOW, Kenny, despite all that, you did a magnificent job!

I have this kit with a whole bunch of PE and aftermarket tracks for it, so I hope that it isn't as frustrating a build as you say it is--I really have always liked the look of this kit!

Great job, snicerely! Nice paint and weathering!

Looks really good considering your struggles with the kit.

Congrats there Kenny on a real gem. Looks brilliant, I'm amazed to see what you and the other guys are doing with these older Italeri kits.

Some good work here Kenny despite the problems you encountered. I would never have guessed you drilled out the muzzle yourself, very nice work there in particular. Thumbs Up [tup]

Thank you all for your very kind remarks.

I have to say that the result is most definitely due to all of the hints and tips given out on this forum.

Thanks to you all...Kenny

I have this kit in the stash actually it just arrived yesterday and am going to accurise it to some degree or another.

ok here is some critiques

1) Build looks pretty good but your rubber rims on the road wheels look like the paint was stripped off? What you should do is use acrylic powders or real mud to weather tires.

2) 37mm Flak ammo is color coded for HE incindiary and AP incindiary don't quite know the colors offhand but I think they are red and yellow.

3) good job on the flash supressor but the brake for the muzzle doesn't exist but there is a section behind the flash supressor that is also supposed to be opened as well.

Oh and before I forget Road wheels are supposed to show lots of abuse so well abuse them just not to heavily. A gouge here and there will work just fine.

Other than the frustration with the tracks it looks to have turned out really quite well.

Kenny, Very nice build for sure!! I only have one suggestion. The mud on the road wheels (which i assume is pigments) could use a bit of massaging to take away the stark black rubber vs solid mud. You can take a small round or flat brush and gently move the pigments around a bit to blend the edges and use some of the pigment to dull down the stark black. There is no need to re-wet them. Reworking them a little dry will make a world of difference. This includes the chassis and body panels that have pigments on them as well.. Won't take but a few minutes.

One thing I consistently see is that often times modelers don't work with the pigments enough once they're applied. Wetting them and smearing them on is only the beginning. As I said, you've done a great job, but I really think you could ramp the weathering up a notch with a little more time spend spreading the dry pigments around.

Nice thing about this kit is that if you want to change out the kit barrel with a LionRoar or Griffon Turned brass barrel the reciever already has the hole to install the barrel.

List of items you can use to make a diamond out of this kit

Eduard PE set for the S.W.S which includes parts for both the S.W.S and the Flak43

Griffon Models 3.7cm clips for the Flak43 (10 clips are in the set)

Griffon Models 3.7cm ammo

LionRoar or Griffon Models 3.7cm Flak43 barrel

Friulmodel tracks for the S.W.S which include the drive sprocket and are what I call "Ambidextrus" tracks

On the workbench: Dragon 1/350 scale Ticonderoga class USS BunkerHill 1/720 scale Italeri USS Harry S. Truman 1/72 scale Encore Yak-6

Hi, I did'nt expect to see this turn up again.

THETFED, I bought the mesh from an Auto repair shop; its what is used for body repairs. Its not to scale but not a long way off.

Thanks once again for all of your comments...cheers....Kenny
