Build Complete - #10 Italeri Camionetta AS 42 Sahariana WIP
Posted by Schnobs on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 8:18 PM

Hey Everyone!

I am ready to start my 10th build and I was inspired at the IPMS show in September when I saw this vehicle on of the tables.

I had never even heard of it before I saw it but the weathering possiblities are extremely tasty and I love what the weathering possiblities that the harsh conditions of a desert environment brings to the presentation.

I started researching immediately and got more and more impressed as I got deeper and deeper into research and then I purchased the kit and the AM items.  The kit has two resin figures that come with the kit and a resin engine and PE.  It is well outfitted but I fell in love with the Allarmi!! figures that cost more than the kit did!  Sigh [sigh]  Internet research can sometimes reveal too much!! Smile [:)]

After learning some rudimentary Italian for vehicle and uniform colors I decided to go whole hog and order the Life Color sets because there are a few more Italian AFV's that I woudl like to build in the future,  at least that justification for the expenditure is working today! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Italian WWII Camouflage Set:

Grigo-Verde Chiaro = Light gray-green

Grigo-Verde Scuro = Dark gray-green

Rosso Ruggine = Red Rust

Verde Scuro = Dark Green

Giallo Sabbia Chiaro = Light Yellow Sand

Giallo Sabbia Scuro = Dark Yellow Sand

Italian WWII Uniforms Set:

Tela Grigio Verde = Canvas Gray Green

Tuta Carrista = Tanker Coverall

Verde Telo Mimetico = Green Camouflage Canvas

Khaki Telo Mimetico = Khaki Camouflage Canvas

Marrone Telo Mimetico = Brown Camouflage Towel

I owe my wife some Honey Do's from the last build but I should be able to get started tomorrow afternoon.

Thats a beauty. Come on over and look at the work on the Reggia Aeronautica GB. Although it's for aircraft, also look at Stormo magazines site, it's a treasure trove of color info, translation of terms and history. I would imagine a similar site(s) exist for the Army.

Schnobs,

I already sent this to your Sherman Build but just in case here it is again.

I agree this will be interesting for me as well since I have not heard of either until now!

Dateline ...Washington, U.S.A.........

Edmond Schnobs Launches New Build Thread !!! Tune in NOW!

I really like these vehicles Man, great choice~~And you spared no expense~~Not a cheap set-up we are look'in at folks ~ I gotta say I like the look of those figures too. You're gunna do great with them ,  I betcha.

~Question ~ Are you planning to have the cannon mounted like on the boxart? I kinda like the look of these as pure transport, but heavy with fuel & water stowage. With a  full crew, it's alot going on, right?  How bout a desert base?   Enough questions?                  Sorry.... It's   ......Very exciting

Rock this build Edmond !

Hey Eric,

I have been salivating over all the Italian armor for quite awhile but his one really caught my eye.

Here is a gret reference link if anyone is interested.

Bob:  Thanks Bob but I gurantee this is goign to take my more than 10 days!

Adam:  LOL!  I am not decided on the gun position as of yet but I like the ideal of all the figures reacting to an overhead menace.  I too like how they look all pointed forward.

I ordered a North African Well and some Italian Fuel drums from Victoria Model this evening so can you say Oasis!  I need to find some good tutorials on making Palm Trees!

I might throw together some of my DAK figures and a DML 6207 PZ.1 Ausf B Dak version and have a little Axis gathering at the waterhole.

Hi Edmund, Just want to let you know that that kit is a piece of crap. Be careful. the resin engine does not fit properly. In fact none of the resin parts fit too well, its like two different kits nailed together in one box. I built one a couple of years ago and after competition where it got a bronze or something I threw the kit the medal and the cert in the bin.

Hope you enjoy this build more than I did.

/forums/700123/ShowPost.aspx

All the best, I will follow close on this.

Oh, Yeah be careful with the fit of parts as the basis of the kit is the armoured car.

Terry.

LOL! You are impatient Sir!! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]  I will try my best not to dissapoint.  I just walked by a fairly extensive Honey DO list that I might have to sub contract out to my daughter, Smile [:)]

I am on my way to the Post Office to mail that package to you Bill.

Marc the Alarmii! box came with three figures with two heads a piece and stowage and equipment which is fantastic.  The differnce in quality between them and the included kit resin figures is startling.  I will do my best to improve them but if I cannotmake them presentable I will leave them off.

Hey Terry I am sorry it was not what you expected.  The end result is fantastic though! Congrats and if bin means garbage can whcih I beleive it does that's just sad Sigh [sigh]

I was thinking I might not even use the engine because I want the Italian flag across the back and the vehcile and figures in motion responding to a precieved threat is the current ideal.

Thank you for the headsup Terry it is appreciated!

Edmund,
You animal you! From the Sherman straight of into this one! This is only kit #10 for you? After watching the Sherman evolve, I can't wait to see what comes of this kit.

Cheers

Looking forward to see what you do with this one Edmund...the reviews weren't kind to this kit and several builders have reported problems with other things besides the engine so you might want to search out a build-log or two if possible to avoid potential pitfalls.

Very cool...I am currently reading Osprey's book on Desert Raiders and it includes a lot of text and pics on this vehicle...

I am also interested right now in these types of vehicles; I have the re-issued Tamiy LRDG Chevy, which now includes the Italian 20mm flak gun...Also getting some new resin figs for it...

I will be tuning in regularly to this one...this vehicle has got to be one of the most unuusual looking ones of WW2...!

Dave:  Yep this one is #10 and hopefully my skill set is up to the challenge because after lots of research and liberal use of my Debit card I have expanded this to a dio.  I love all the back-story on this vehicle and how the LRDG were their nemesis so I came up with a Chance Encounter Oasis Diorama ideal that I just purchased the following for to make it happen:

Tamiya L.R.D.G Command Cat & Breda 20mm AA gun: The vehicle is Tamiya and the gun is Italeri.

New World Miniatures LRDG crew:

Model Victoria North African Well and Italian Fuel Drums:

I also have these figures that came with a DML PZ.1 Ausf. D Dak Version that I could either use as they are or convert with Italian heads.  It might be cool to have the Germans and the Italians at an Oasis the LRDG accidentally bust into.

Wbill:  Thanks Bill for the heads up.  I am German, Irish and Cherokee so the best way to guarantee that I am going to be successful is to tell me it is impossible or it's going to be difficult!  If anyone has a link to a WIP on this vehicle please feel free to post it.

Manny:  Hey Manny there you are I was getting worried about you!  Too weird huh I started getting everything together last night.  The book looks very interesting I might have to pick that one up!

I probably don't have to ask but, ANYBODY building the LRDG Chevy  has the new (November '09) Model Military International I hope. The "desert gun truck" is the cover story, (killer) feature article/build by the editor, and is backed-up by a thorough and interesting backstory with color plates on the vehicle and the pink paint schemes....don't make a move without it!

Oh and Edmond...once again... Freakin COOL stack of stuff there.....very exciting

I called Borders they don't have the November issue yet.  I did order the Osprey book tongiht though!

Here is pics of the spruce layout

I also found this cool review that was in Portugese and I used Google to translate

http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=pt&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.webkits.com.br%2Fnews%2Ftemplates%2Fnews.asp%3Farticleid%3D345%26zoneid%3D30

Serous work will begin tommorow.  If anyone knows what color the Italians used for a primer or if they even used one please let me know I have not been able to pin that down yet.

~I say "Subscribe !!! to MMI " easily my fav model mag (shame on me, it's the best)
Thats a fantasic review / step by step /  reference you found there Edmond ! Imagine if we found one that good for every kit we built.  The sprues don't make it look scary at all...but the SBS kinda does....well.....alot of challenges anyways (wouldn't want it any other way) Evil [}:)] ~~ Also on the bottom of the page there ~~~ alot of great articles for how-to's for the armour modeller or (the armor modeler even!)  ~~Good job locating that

Hey Indy!

MMIR is my favorite and I subscribe to Finescale and Scale Military Modeller International whcih both came in the mail today! Red Letter Day!

I have read MMI before and it is a great mag as well.

LOL! I managed to accomplish Steps 1-5 today and because I have never built a wheeled vehicle before I was very anal to insure the frame was straight and level so that the wheels wudl sit level.  I am very impressed with the kit so far.  Keepign my fingers crossed!

~Good start ~ You're already ahead of the dude on StepByStep with the warped chassis to deal with.

MMIR is also excellent (better/funnier with Pat as editor)but, I'm sure you can agree, it's hard to justify subscribing to EVERY model magazine, even if we'd like to.

 Never seen SMMI yet.

I like the 'feel' and consistancy of quality I see in MMI, so it tops my list.

2nd is MM, it's near as good, just not quite as consistant, but they experiment more.

~ FSM  was more interesting as I re-entered the hobby, I think that's in some ways it's best thing, I don't find it too mind-blowing but it has the best total overview of modeling, and I value that.

Hey Bill!

Slipping into Excellence My Friend!!  I really got into the reference material whcih is light on the ground for this one.  I also had to read a bunch of your's and other guys posts on wheeled vehicles so I would not end up with a three legged beast!
