Cool that's what I was trying to go for or a sepia look.

Damn Edmund!   Sweeeeet!  Not only is the project itself just the Cat's Meow...but you're also showing some dramatic improvement in your camera skills.  These last pictures of the beginning painting are nice.

Most Excellent work, my friend.

Rick

LOL! Thanks Rick I enjoy taking pictures of my work as much as building so I am trying to build those skills as well.  That's a nice compliment coming from you Rick because your photo work is quite good!

I forgot to include a overhead shot so here is one:

I narrowed my base color down to 7 choices and after some thought down to three.

Life Colors

Giallo Sabbia Chiaro = Light Yellow Sand

Giallo Sabbia Scuro = Dark Yellow Sand

Model Master Acryl 4720 Sand

My next steps will be applying Model Master Metalizer Exhaust to some high traffic areas followed by Vallejo Calvary Brown and Oily Steel.  After these dry I will apply my Mens Hair Spray and then the Basecoat.

Edmund,

I like the UA 218, the lifecolor on the left.  It seems to have more character.

~Hello Edmund ~ Another episode of Batmobile Begins!

Hehe  hehe Evil [}:)]   I like how of the entire hair spray market maybe 10% is  Men's Hairspray, and you got that! Is it cause its alreadyin your med cabinet?  Big Smile [:D]

~of these colors

Mix them 1:1 and that seems about right. One's too dark, one too light. If you like a medium base , and insist of using the Lifecolor........you used 'em before?Like them?

Bill & Adam:  I decided to mix both the colors as Adam suggested and try it out on the wheels to see of I liked the color here is how that turned out:

The tire color is Floquil Weathered Black which in MYHO is the best color I have ever seen for tires.

Adam:  I read an article in MMIR that specifically recommended that particular Ultra Mist Hairspray to get the effect I was looking for so I asked my wife if she could find it for me and she did because she is just that way!  I have never used Life Color paints before except their Tensocrome Weathering sets which are quite good.  I thinned the paint with distilled water and it sprayed out of the AB beautifully.

Bob:  Thanks Bob!

Ibuild:  I am missing the Doog refereence did he use this Hairspray before?

~That color looks just great to me.

~Also,  Floquil Weathered Black for tires....Thumbs Up [tup]      Next on those, try drybrushing some Floquil Grimy Black(esp on the tread & sidewalls), Then maybe another drybrush with the Grimy black lightened with some Floquil Primer......good stuff!

Thanks Indy!  I never thought about dry brushing the Weathered Black I will have to give that a try.

Build Update:

I followed through on my plans to create a metal finish followed up by a lightly primered look.

I first used MM Metalizer Exhaust followed by Vaellyo Oily Steel Dry Brushing.

I then sprayed light coats of Valleyo Calvary Brown and then Dry brushed some more Vallejo Oily Steel.  I will wait until tomorrow morning to spray a couple coats of Hair Spray before I base coat.  Chipping should be a lot of fun!

Smokin hot base coat!

very good layer choices, makes sense.

Hey, Edmund, after going back n forth about the Floquil, I realized I didn't have "Weathered Black, so I stopped on the way home at the LHS and bought it. Man! Wouldn't you know it! Floquil Weathered Black#F110017 is EXACTLY THE SAME as Floquil Grimy Black #F110013, It looked plenty similar in the bottle but I got home and painted a card to compare. Thats not so kind of them, same paint, 2 numbers, two names! Luckily its a darn handy paint. I also got another jar of the Primer, great stuff!

Hey Indy I am hoping it works out as planned!  I let it dry overnight and then sprayed two heavy coats of Hairspray over the entire vehcile drying each coat with my Hair Dryer.  I then let it set for about two hours and then applied two -three light coats of 80\20 mix of LifeColor Light Sand and Dark Sand respectively.  I thinned the paint with Distilled Water.

It sprays beautifully and I am almost ready to start chipping with some warm water and a stiff brush. Mischief [:-,]

Thanks Mark & Will for the support!

Build Update:  I used a stiff brush and warm distilled water to chip the paint after waiting 1.5 hours for the paint to harden.  I was very careful becasue I had only done this once before with Tamiya paint but not Lifecolor and rightly so because the paint was softer than Tamiya.

I carefully worked all the high traffic areas on the vehicle and main gun always using my 3X Diopter to keep all chipping in scale.

Here is where I am right now and I will have to walk away for the evening to let the paint continue to harden up.  Please let me know what you think.  Again I wanted a subtle look and will not be covering it up with Pigments like a flour dipped flounder either!  Less is More!

Sorry Dial Up Guys!

Photo-freaking-realistic.

No two ways about this, great base coat, great chipping effect, great peek a boo color to enhance the chipping.  Congratulations on being able to walk away at this point and not overdo it.

This one is a show stopper, I should know, I went to a show once.

Great GREAT job on this, Edmund, fantastic.  By far my favorite build.

~Very Very Damn cool is the word  Edmond!  Congrads on showing great resraint to achieve "subtle"

IF you do any more... I'd say a bit more around the front end, cause this thing looks fast, and even fast road cars get alot of pitting on the front end driving through sand storms. I love what you got around the siderails & deck. I wouldn't mind more beat-up tool boxes, but man, it's good to go!Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]

Thanks Andy, Adam & Bill for following this on a Friday Night!

I spent a couple hours away and came back and did some more very careful chipping of the higher traffic areas including the nose and spare tire mount.

Less Is More!!!

Good Nite All!

Bravo!!!

Edmund, hands-down one of the BEST examples of hairspray chipping I have seen.  In such a short time (how many builds is this now?) you have become the complete package; builder, painter, experimenter, photographer, blogger...nice work my friend.

Best,

Rick

Edmund if this was a talent contest i would say that you are the one to beat as you get consistently stronger and better with every build. Im quite envious of what you have achieved on this paintwork so far aswell as the build, its seriously lookin great and might just have inspired me to dig out my half finnished Famo build as im after the same kind of look with that.

Blush [:I] Wow!  That is some nice praise from someone I really respect both as a modeler and as a person. I was looking at my desk last night and thinking I have spent a lot of time and money on this hobby this year in an effort to acquire and improve my skillset and and the end of the day if that was a good investment or not.  I initially got into this hobby because I had a very high pressure job and I had went to Michael's right before Christmas last year to find a Christmas themed art project my daughter and I could put together.  I ended up picking up some ceramic paint yourself ornaments and my daughter was done with her angel in ten minutes and when I looked up six hours had gone by and I was done with my Reindeer and I could of sold him at Hallmark!  I was so proud of that deer.  On the same outing I had picked up a FineScale December 2008 Issue that had Karl's Hetzer article in it and I remember how amazed I was and had childlike wonder about how real all the models looked. I absolutely fell in love this hobby and bought my first Dragon DML Pz.IV kit and I never looked back.  This is my tenth model and now I model for different reasons.

I lost my High Powered Job in August and left with a fairly decent severence package and Thank God I had this hobby to keep me occupied and out of my own head. I am really grateful for faith and the fact that my life is not my business.  Yesterday was not such a good day I had lots of fear and anxiety about going into the holidays unemployed and the uncertainty of the economy.  My friend Bill  and that is what he is calls and talks to me everyday and we talk about modeling and techniques and gossip about you guys but what we are really sayiing in the subtext is "That's it's going to be okay and you are not alone"

Thanks Bill, Adam, WBill, Andy, Dave, Terry, Karl, ,Manny, Nate, Steve, Bob, Little Jim, Boyd, Dupes Marc, Mark, Rob all you guys that have become important to me over the last year and for keeping me sane.

I am also a Gulf War Vet and this experience has also helped me heal in other ways as well. Now that I have exposed myself to over 45,000 Finescale Subscribers and the internet at large,

Let's Do This!!!
