Heya Gabby!!!!!!!!!

Thank you 42 tons William.

In 25 days it'll be    ..........so I guess green putty is fairly appropriate here.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2g8BTIVlDhE/ToDJGFrY-MI/AAAAAAAAAUo/b0inK1euMCg/s1600/SickSmileyFace.gif My first experience with the green stuff wasn't a pleasant memory
neither was the second  or  third  try.
I got better though......

   we all haf'ta start somewhere.

The way I have described how to handle this
stuff is (to me) the way to go
                           And as shown,
              can produce   acceptable results......
You can use this  to produce smooth surfaces just as well .....
no MR. ANTHING needed.
Old school......... yeahhhh.

Now (as for the avatar) the monkey would be way cool
and would adequately portray your mischievous nature.........

..............but don 'cha think Gabby would be better?

Well, between some late night postings  -  I've managed to type an update this morning.............

Enjoy friends.......... There's a whole lot more to come.

Been having some technical problems here lately .... http://th307.photobucket.com/albums/nn293/ccwebcrap/Smileys/th_truestory1.gif
......replacing my router.....
...........installing a new inverter on my monitor .........

.......   an fixin' that stupid leakin' flap thing in the toilet reservoir.
  AAAAHHHHHH!!! crap!....

Anyway.....

.........now it’s time to start rollin’ again……………

Ok boys, get out yer toothpicks and sanding sticks.

Put a toothpick in ‘ya mouth.... like this .... see.

(heh he, .....  that’s just what I do to cop an attitude,
and make myself look ‘n feel like I
                         might know what I'm doin’)

And here comes the opening shot

  1. After deburring, jam a return roller tightly onto a toothpick (not the one in your mouth dummy).
  2. Lightly sand the roller carefully in the direction of the toothpick while slowly rotating the toothpick/roller……..that’s just the way “I” do it.  Leave the sanded residue from the wheels on the file……  and yes, there is a reason.
  3. After sanding 'em all, replace the tight fitting toothpick with a loose one that lets the roller spin freely.
  4. Coat the roller surface with laquer thinner several times to soften it up.
  5. After the last of several laquerings…… lay the file on a convenient surface and drip some more thinner onto the surface of the file (use a dropper so you won’t remove the randomly acquired residue from the file) .

Here’s the file I use for this…..    rough side/dirty side up.
(A veteran of many steel wheels)

The object here is to represent a lightly pitted steel surface.

Hold the toothpick tips between your thumb and the “finger”    ...he, he ...
Now with a bit of downward pressure, roll it back and forth across
the surface of the file which will imprint a pattern on the wheel
while also depositing the fine dust on to the wheel (resin dust is a nice plus
since it will embed instead of mushing kinda flat from the laquer).

Don’t go around huffin’ any of that stuff either,
 i
t’s lonnnggg term deadly.

Now, if you have doubts about the results,
                                here’s what it looks like………..

   I like it.
                                   What'cha think?

           http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b232/gluetank/Decorated%20images/Picture0.jpg?t=1298353391

If you DON”T like what you see, then just don't look... he, he......

Nahhhh,
just let them dry thoroughly for about 36 and lightly sand
     them to your own taste.

I just haddddd to try a bit of painting….. so tempting.
Spray 'em flat black and dry brush the sides with dark earth.

               Here's the family album.....

Next, using a stumpy brush slightly dampened with thinned acrylic (tamiya) olive drab,
carefully jab paint onto the outer sides in an irregular pattern.

            Let ‘em dry………..
Put ‘em back on their tight sticks to hold 'em steady (if you haven’t already).....

   wash 'em with burnt umber…….

carefully hair dry dose babies if you’re in a hurry………

                ........ patience is much better

When they're dry go ‘round the edges aggressively (metal to metal contact area)
but lightly on the broad contact surfaces (rubber to metal) with a #2 pencil. Don't dullcote after the penciling because it will kill the sheen and turn the shiny part black.

You can do the rear idlers in a similar fashion although the wide flat wear
surface would be smoother (less pitting) due to the increased pressure of the track tension (rubber trackpads against steel).

Here’s a picture from the unfinished backside.

  ..........oops, wrong picture.

.........   I’m forgettin’ pictures again.

Ahh, here's one.

'Ya like it?

heya Steve,

That is quite the tutotial !  Very well written and I agree the softening powers of lacquer thinner When applied carefully and masterfully get you some great results. !

On the 1/16 models with rubber tires, I use 100 grit paper !

Steve, I was wondering what cupola you will be using. ?... as if you don't already know :)...

Glad you and MIke  like my avatars ears  .. they are cerainly attractive !....

My shoulder resection came out well but very very pain ful  so gotta cut this short ... I am typing with my toes you see   :  )

Bill,

Since I'm using a resin turret it looks like there's not much choice in the matter,   so it'll obviously be the late war version.

I'm glad your shoulder episode is coming along well.

And it's also good to know I'm keeping 'ya on yer toes.

heya Steve,

I knew you were using the resin turret, but , the reason I asked is because I have a correct 1/35 cupola and hatch from Dragon with clear individual vision blocks all brand new. Still in the bag.Love to send it to ya... It would look mighty sharp and save the trouble of cutting and fitting glass for the resin piece if you were thinking of going that way.  The glass cut outs are already in the cupola, so you don't have to cut anything.  let me know ......... :   )

thanks for your concern for my arm  .... slowly but surely.... ;  )

It's good to have friends to fun with
My mission here is simple and two fold:
     1. To give input as to how I create my works.
     2. To prescribe some humor and keep it fun.

So far, feedback looks like I'm achieving my objectives; but of course, there will always be some "serious" modelers that
will fail to enjoy the humor..........

  Small update here.

              ..........
well, it sure beats NO update here don't it?

 http://myphoto.eu/img/smiles_dark/smileySweating.gif Here’s how I assemble bogies on a Sherman…….
and yet manage to paint and weather everything separately.

The left view shows the inner and outer parts glued together. The right view shows how the parts are modified so you can slip the return rollers in after they are painted separately.

Same thing here for the larger lower wheels.
But first razor saw a slot to relieve the stress .......
bloodysmiley.gif image by B-Electronic
                       - careful here.

Then I use side cutters to cut the majority of the material out.
I refine the cuts closer with a fingernail clipper, then use a sanding stick to smooth off the nubs.
Leave about a sixteenth inch each side…… no problem to slide the wheels in after painting.

Here are the return skids that go on top of the bogeys.
  I used the
dimensions from the skids off of another kit.

      Here's what you'll need.......

some sheet brass, a brass bushing of the correct size,
steel ruler, backside of an old #11 X-acto, a pair of pliers and both hands.

I razzored some bolt heads off of some old parts and temporarily attached
them with some elmer's to get a V E (visual evaluation………).
They’ll be lined up better on the final assembly.

And yeah,    that's my big red panic button. I keep it near & handy....

I’ll be showing some more progress in this area the next time I come back

If your reading this Bill get in touch on FB.

Good luck Guy's

Terry.
