Yes, another Tiger......

I'm bit. Tamiya's ancient Tiger2, $5. Friuls, $20. CMK barrel, $10. Fun, priceless.

I bought the kit many years ago, received the recent Tiger P as a gift last year and built it, had so much fun doing something unusual for me that I pulled this off the shelf and dug in. Off in the deep end I go......

You guys are making me laugh this fine Sunday morning!

As soon as I get more done, I'll post up. For now, I have to tone down the welds on the hull plates a bit, then I'll start on the few hull fittings I plan on having. All the stuff on the turret roof needs some definition as well. This thing defines "soft detail"......

I want to depict a late war, partially-fitted out tank, probably in dk yellow and green only camo. I did a "what-if, 1946" M26 Pershing a while ago that this one may be displayed with, not sure yet.

Thanks` for looking!

Nothing like a good dose of inspiration to get a shelf-queen down and back on the bench. Look forward to seeing this one get its due.

Other than being underpowered and relying on a transmission that was far to light for the task the King Tiger was years ahead of any design emerging from WWII.

Sure the Soviets released the JS II at the end of WWII yet if a JS II and a King Tiger were to duel I would place my bet on the Tiger II! Mainly for the accuracy & velocity of the longer barrel '88.

Another factor is how modern the tank looks. It would not look out of place on a modern battle field and even the formidable M1A1 Abrams borrowed some design ideas from Germany's late WW II monster.

Low in numbers the Tiger II left a large impression.

Looking forward to your build!

Have a R/C Tiger II to finish up one day, field trials were successful, time to do the exterior decorating.

This is going to be fun to watch especially that it has been a while since King Tiger WIP was posted here.  I am still a big fan of Tamiya... my last three purchases were Tamiya kits.  Big Smile

Yesterday was time to focus on the turret. I did the spare track hangers, parts came from the Tamiya Tiger(p) that I finished. The sprue with spare track had the parts on it. The tie down loops for the foliage-hanger wire  that I've seen on models of very late Tiger2's was made with Friul wire. I double one strand, pull the open ends through one hole around a piece of .035" welding wire and glue the inside. I saw this in a mag a while ago, in an article by Mike Rinaldi (I think..)

The rear hatch was thickened with plastic card and sealed up with MrSurfacer, then shaped. It still needs the two plugs(?) below the grab handle.

I'm going to use the kit cupola, using MrSurfacer to give it some texture.

Mantlet and barrel are CMK, rain cover over gunner's sight aperture is plastic card.

Almost ready to start on the hull. Any suggestions so far? Am I missing anything obvious?

Thanks for looking and commenting! All input welcomed.

I'm to thepoint of thinking I'm finished with the turret today. I did the welds for the roof armor, re-did the ventilator and shell-ejection port (it's a little over-size but still looks better than the original) and added some do-dads on a couple models of late T2s in the mag articles I'm using for reference. Waddaya think?

Shows rear hatch details,

Hatches, ventilator cover.

Major reference article, from Armor (Panzer Aces) mag.

Thanks, guys. I'm more pumped on this one than I have been in a while. I really do enjoy all this light scratch work.....and on something I don't do every day. In actuality, this is my second German tank since I was a teenager.

The turret is resting peacefully on it's work stand (yoghurt cup) and I've dug in to the hull. I had the molded-on details already cut off, so I began by smoothing and puttying the sides, adding welds, and lots of MrSurfacer500, which BTW I now need more of......

I used plastic screen for the engine deck air grills, and have added stands for the shrapnel covers, cut and ready to go on. Grab handles are replaced with either steel .025" welding wire or core tag wire (I have a lot of both laying around) and kit parts either smoothed or painted with my old buddy MrSurfacer, more for variety than anything else. Tamiya had a very fine pebbly texture on every part, probably intended to be a representation of actual cast and rolled parts, but it was on EVERYTHING, and, in my opinion, did nothing more than date the kit.

Hull side detail is started, cable brackets, fender mounts, etc. I made up a starter crank from wire and plastic rod, a tad overscale but better than what was in the kit. Front fenders are from the kit with added stiffeners. Rear hull detail is largely from the kit, with added texture. Final drive housings, largely hidded by the drive sprockets, are from Trump's T55. The inner faces will get some more bolt and fill-plug detail.  The hull MG port was open, so I boxed it in and used a spare Sherman part for the ball mount. It's a little deep, but will work, I think.

Today, I'm going to try and get the brackets for the gun-cleaning rods made up, and the rods themselves. I may have to hit the Hobby Town for some tube here, as the three I made yesterday are a bit large, and these need to be in-scale, since a specigfic number need to fit in a specific space. I have not decided yet whether or not to actually put the various cables on the hull sides. What's in the kit has poorly done ends, not to mention the the rest......

Anyway, the pics:

As always, thanks for looking!  I'm having a blast, hope you are too.......

A bit more on the hull, nothing dramatic but moving along. Gun cleaning rods and brackets are on, I haven't "closed" the brackets until I decide if I want the tow cables yet since they're integral.

Grill covers are on, brackets for tow shackles started, fuel tank vents done. I need to find Tamiya's German tank tool/equip set for a shovel, wire cutters, etc. I's also like to scare up the fire extinguisher seen on the rear deck, we'll see what my LHS has next week.

Thanks for commenting and looking, have a great weekend!

Looking good so far!

Although I don't understand why everyone has to say "another tiger...", I don't see the problem with building tigers. 1347 tiger Is were built and 492 tiger IIs were built during the war, I'm sure that we can build one a month and be fine. It's more annoying to me that people say that than the fact that theyre building a tank that existed at some point in time much like almost all other vehicles and people built on this forum.

D.F., jdice, thanks hugely, messages sent.

Tanker, the Friuls were picked up at an IPMS show a couple of years ago, at a stall that had mostly airplane stuff and DVDs, no idea I'd ever use them. I saw them for sale twice, over the course of a year or more, before I bought them. I almost used them on the KT Porsche that my wife bought me but sucked up and bought the correct tracks for it, leaving these un-used. I'm not even sure if they're totally correct, but they're at least close..........

'bro, nothing against Tigers myself, but build logs and print articles about them are fairly common, something that I'm personally glad of now since I'm lacking in other resources. In fact, I'm almost copying a build in a magazine..... in the spirit od "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery".

Bill, Manny, thanks, I'm enjoying this one a bunch.  I'm going to smooth the turret texture down a bit, looks too rough in the pics. Sound like a good idea? I want the texture and look of rolled armor plate from a German factory, not a Soviet casting..... I think the paint will eventually end up dark yellow with that funky late-war green as a second color. Can anyone recommend color equivalents in MM rattle cans?

A little more on the hull today, tools clasps for the starter crank, a fire extinguisher from scratch, re-do on the front fender stiffeners, and some detail on the rear hull. Tools, cables (if I decide to make some), a Notek light (anyone know if one comes in the PzIV tool set from Tamiya?) and I think I'm ready for paint.

Thanks for looking! I also added some bits to the engine deck area......
