"The Holy Man" Diorama semi-WIP
Posted by stalkerfish on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 12:38 PM

I'm pretty close to being finished with my latest diorama effort, so I thought I'd post it here. I bought Bronco's 1/35 scale 25 Pdr SP Bishop with No.27 limber on sale for $28 last fall and decided to make a scene for it.
Construction was a long process. The model had many fiddly bits for the gun and interior, and some of the fits were less than excellent. I painted with a combination of Tamiya and Vallejo acrylics, weathering with oil washes, filters, tile grout, and pigments.
I made some desert groundwork with pre-mixed grout and pigments, adding some rocks and pebbles made from Celluclay. I scratchbuilt a telephone pole and added broken wires made from stretched sprue after seeing a photo of such an object online. My aim is to put the self-propelled gun next to an abandoned German artillery position, so I added some spent shell casings and wicker ammunition cases.
I plan on adding some crew figures from Verlinden, inspecting the engine. I'll also buy some sandbags and photo-etched barbed wire to complete the abandoned emplacement.
I have yet to attach some small details such as antennae, grab handles, and whatnot. The base has the sides sawed off, as I am going to add some rock-textured corners.

Very nice. Would like some close-ups if possible. Not sure the muzzle would be blackened as it is, but it looks like a solid build none-the-less.

I hope Bronco comes out with a Valentine soon.

Cool, I love her! Always nice to see something a little different around here.

As requested, here are some shots of the interior. I weathered it pretty heavily, as sand can really take a toll on paint and whatnot.

WICKED cool, man---looks great! I Love how you've managed to make the color of the vehicle completely match the ground color!

Thanks! The similar color is mostly due to a heavy layer of dust. I mixed white powdered tile grout with burnt umber and raw sienna pigments until the mixture was a buff-ish color. I use it for everything since it does such a great job of simulating dust.

It looks hot and dry in that little setting.  Well done!

Excellent work. The figures you intend to add should really give additional realism and scale to the entire piece. Keep it up!
