A Tour of My Home - Unlike Anywhere in the World
Posted by Model Maniac on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 9:19 AM

During the past month I've created 4 Photo Albums on Facebook covering my military model collection. They may stimulate modelers to buy more and build more models, and let the collection grow.:

Wow, what a collection! I was feeling overwhelmed because I have four unbuilt kits laying beside my desk. I'm nowhere near your backlog! Nice collection indeed.

Pretty awesome,I have seen a lot of the builds that you post here and it is some nice stuff.Do you build yourself or collect others work for your enjoyment,I'm not clear from your many postings.

But whoever builds them, they are really impressive.

Tojo and Mopar, no, he does not build any of them...he gives the work to modelers to do it.

Yup, all bought works, nothing built by him.  He comes on to show them off and is looking for everyone to tell him how great they are and how awesome his house is, etc.....   He is nothing more than a collector with a large amount of mediocre models that were not built by him.  Don't encourage him.

Mopar - Thanks for your kind comments. Build your 4 kits and buy more.

Tojo72 - Thanks for your kind comments and inquisition. In short, I'm a modeler turned collector because I want the best of both worlds for my collection - quantity and quality. I built everything myself from the beginning - from warplanes to armors to warships; the biggest piece I built was Yamato 1:350,

until about 15 years ago that I began contracted out modeling services and stopped building by myself due to said reason. Still my build accounts for 15-20% of my collection, but they're mostly at back rows on high shelves and low shelves, not much seen. Right now I have 6 talented, award-winning modelers working on clearing my stash. I still buy a little bit, lately a third "Terminator" but this time from Zvezda.

Here are some proof of my own works:

Bragging is one of the most negative attitudes a human being can possess, imo.  Calling his collection and home like "unlike anywhere in the World" is nothing short of bigotry.  If you want to thank him be my guest, I will not feed that kind of egos. And yes I have seen bigger collections build by the owner....that is something to really be proud of.  Im out of this thread.

Well, I feel bound to remind you all that "Model Maniac" bashing isn't exactly rocket science either. It gets old.

He's got a couple of builders who actually are pretty good, problem is they get handed kits at random, under deadlines and have no idea what they are building.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Scarecrow Joe - relax man, we weren't taking it as bragging. My post was merely a in a light-hearted way in joking. Don't take things too seriously. Re-read your post. You say you 've seen "bigger collections by another owner". Well, that is bragging there and you don't seem too impressed with Model Maniac's collection.

I didn't feel that Model Maniac was bragging about his collection but is sharing photos of his stash.

BlackSheepTwoOneFour - You're welcome! Thanks for your kind comments and understanding. Subject lines, like newspapers' head lines, need to be enticing. On two other sites I used "A Tour of My Home - I Live in What?". I knew I can't please everyone, but I think that these days some people sadly lack netiquette. I for one, if I don't have something good to say about someone or something, I keep my mouth shut. That's the netiquette that I hold tight!

GMorrison - Thanks for your kind comments on the first paragraph. But you have some misunderstandings on the second one. All 6 artists have certain line or pattern of work. "AI" for armors and dioramas, "PJ" for figures, vignettes, pick-ups and motorbikes, "Joh" for figures and vignettes, "Artama", "Nipon" and "Tum" for warplanes and warships. More importantly, there is NO dead lines for any of them. They may take as much time as they please, for I can wait. "Tum" hasn't turned up almost two years now (working on Hasegawa's USS Gambier Bay + 3 Up-grade sets) and I've never called him.

How do you keep them dry and safe in event of typhoons and torrential rain seasons? Man, I'd do anything to see them in person... and try a little Thai food too! LOL!

Typhoons usually lash the Philippines, and when they make landing they land on Vietnam & China, not Thailand. In 2011 Thailand had a big flood affecting 60-70% of the country and many parts of Bangkok, but luckily my house is in the part not affected at all by the flood. My showroom, however, is not waterproof. Many times after heavy rainfalls, rain water made its way into the showroom and the restroom, onto the display cases and the floor. My brother checked the ceiling tiles and found no leakage. Still rain water finds its way in, though not every time.

Save up your money, buy low-cost air ticket and come to Thailand some day. I'll treat you with Thai food & Chinese food!

MM no matter how they're built or collected you have one impressive collection and what ever your reasons, you do have a passion for modeling. I like to think theres room in this hobby for everybody, I think lot of us have built models for friends or contracted at one time or another, thats really not much different than what your doing but on a huge scale. I know others may disagree with me but anything that promotes our hobby and keeps modelers busy, is alright with me.

I enjoy looking at everybody's builds no matter.

Bish, I thought about reporting it but decided to let it go.  Now I see the guys edited the post. I stand 100% behind what I said and upon reviewing some old threads in the past I see that perhaps my view of this is shared by lots here, maybe the majority, noticeable by the lack of responses to his threads.

This site's title is: ''FineScale Modeler, the essential magazine for the model BUILDER".  Aint building an essential part of it? Perhaps the MOST important? Am I crazy here? LOL!  My other hobby is photography, and this situation here would be like me posting pictures that I payed another guy to take?? In ANY photography forum they would be just deleted!

Oh, well, best to concentrate on sharing builds and looking through other guy's work here, that is time well spent.

This DOES go back, WAAAAAY back, to at least, what----2008? I remember it coming up shortly after I joined the forum in 2007. Some people have an issue with it because I think they make assumptions about what Phaisal (Model Maniac) does or doesn't do, or build, , or how he obtains his collection. I admit that I too used to be very cynical about it until he explained things and now I think it's just his "niche" here--personally, I find his posts to be actually very informative when he posts up a group of current releases and they're generally all finished to a pretty high standard--in that way, I can get a good idea of what the builds might look like before I buy one of them (or not). And I have to admit that it's been a pleasure to watch some of his more senior builders turn into some really fine modelers.

I can speak from experience that some people (myself included) tend to just be myopic or ignorant of cultural influences, traditions, and mores Propeller. I have friends from all over the world, and some of them from different countries hold certain things very highly--things that are relatively unimportant to me, but for them, it's prime. And nowhere is it easier to misjudge, assume, and/or make incorrect assumptions about any given person than the internet. You get about 10% of the information you need to properly assess any person's situation unless you really dig in and ask personal questions. Phaisal has always been a gentleman here, and remarkably tolerant and diplomatic of some of the abuse that he has suffered here, and for that's just one reason for which I hold him in high respect. Others have gotten their knickers in an knot and stalked off, their egos dragging behind them, for MUCH less! Surprise

Anyway, that's a pretty amazing collection! I can't imagine the sheer dollar value of all of that together!?

What makes me accept and enjoy MM's posts, Joe, is that he has NEVER concealed the fact that he commissions his builds. I really think criticism is misplaced.

I also can list a long string of people on this forum who also actively participate, but to the best of my knowledge, from any evidence, have not built a kit in recent time.

I hate semantic arguments, so I'll only note but not defend that the world is full of building contractors who market themselves as "builders", myself among them, but the Owners of same either never have, or haven't for years, worn tools.

Consider MM the conductor and Art Instructor, Jo and the rest musicians.

He's an entirely pleasant fellow, and readily will engage in all the other *** conversations that go on here, about motorcycles, cars, food and hometowns.

Just my two bits.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

"....nowhere is it easier to misjudge, assume, and/or make incorrect assumptions about any given person than the internet."

So that opens up the probability that you could have the wrong impression about him too....right? I mean why anyone with a different view than yours must be having "the wrong impression".  This can go both ways!

I prefer to follow my own instinct here and stand behind what I said before.  The "builder" part of the equation is the most important one, but more than that....humility is second to none and frankly I see that lacking, not only here but in this guy posting history. Oh, and yes....I took the time to review it.  Its there for anyone to do.  The only ego dragging around here comes from the OP....of course that is all just my opinion, your mileage can vary.Big Smile

Hmmm. "The "builder" part of the equation is the most important one.." -- um...because *you're* a "builder", right? Wink Hmmmmm...

What was that you were saying about "humility" being "second to none"?...Whistling

I honestly believe you're misjudging the man. From a cultural AND personal point of view, in all seriousness. But if you're determined to hold that bitter opinion, that's certainly your right. Sad
