Well, I've popped up again tonight. http://rs717.pbsrc.com/albums/ww173/prestonjjrtr/Holidays/Easter/whatsupdoc.gif~c200
The bad news is that I spent most of Saturday & Sunday
http://www.smiley-lol.com/smiley/loisirs/dehors/elmer.gifhunting for my SD card with the pics I was going to display from Tuesdays  doings...... alas, no http://s2.rimg.info/544a45dd176f55d1bf6564214a21a675.gif duck... er  luck.

But the good newshttp://emoticoner.com/files/emoticons/smileys/feed-birds-smiley.gif?1292867592 is that I have today's picture updates, guess that'll have to do.

Exhaust (not adjusted yet) pipes
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n23/Sablicious/behindfencesmiley.gif~original peeking up through the exhaust vents and some of the surface texture showing on the armor surfaces.

http://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL351/12291693/21864322/413474780.jpg
Here is the rear deck with a more detailed look at the exhaust area (dark & dusty) and the grill support partition installed between the arrow symbols going from left to right.
http://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL351/12291693/21864322/413474780.jpg

Now without the SD card I have to move on past some work already completed.

The ventilator (white) was incorrect for this version so, (not having a spare) I did what any red https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSo-tZfYdg-DIdVNBHiJkxlc90tYVDQBdVHs-qViusIFTVgu8lF primered modeler would do.......   made my own.

More about the work on this turret later on.

http://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL351/12291693/21864322/413474780.jpg

Goofin' around with the green putty.
http://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL351/12291693/21864322/413474780.jpg

The turret was specifically designed by Krupp for this vehicle. The ejecting port for spent shell casings was welded shut for the Porsche styled turret that was used on the production Tiger II. Dragon totally left this detail out (along with some other details I'll be correcting later on).

Did some measuring and marking
http://t-static.de/smileys/misc/yawn.gif worked out a  satisfactory result http://www.kolobok.us/smiles/artists/laie/Laie_54.gifon that port.
http://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL351/12291693/21864322/413474780.jpg

Before I put that nice dark red primer finish on the hull with dollar tree paint, I slid a piece of aluminum foil in from the turret area beneath the grills and exhaust area.....that way any overspray or washes will be contained since the foil will not turn to mush like tape or paper and will slide right out.  I really like how the primer looks.

There's some http://www.evolutionm.net/forums/customavatars/avatar3345_1.gif vague engine details beneath those grills but I had no references to really put anything accurate
in there. So, just some general shapes,
at least it's not just an http://www.picgifs.com/smileys/smileys-and-emoticons/bananas/smileys-bananas-077539.gif empty looking blank space.
For now you're just seeing tinfoil under that screening.

Just basic stuff here.........
The exhaust area has been
http://s3128.storage.proboards.com/5403128/i/45Dp1J7_I_ShX81733o4.gif taped shut.

http://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL351/12291693/21864322/413474780.jpg

Lots of hull detail under that thar primer.

1. Flame cuts and texturing.
2. Headlight conduits and conduit bracing.
3. Handles added left & right for securing the rear hatch cover.
4. Spare track hangers on the rear.
5. Eh
http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/sweating.gif, probably forgot some stuff, look it over.

http://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL351/12291693/21864322/413474780.jpg

The  dragon kit (http://forum.macworld.se/public/style_emoticons/default/elaktflin.gifagain) didn't have the track bumpers beneath the sponsons so I had to cut some out from some leftover bogie wheels I had and "weld" them in place.

I modified the cable and tool fittings on both sides of the hull too. Got those headlights and fittings nice and even, maybe too even.

And yeah, I know what you're thinking; that http://emoticoner.com/files/emoticons/smileys/loosing-it-smiley.gif texture is too rough looking. Same for the turret.
But after several layers of paint it'll even out just fine.

http://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL351/12291693/21864322/413474780.jpg

Here's the view from the other side of the primer can lid.

http://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL351/12291693/21864322/413474780.jpg

Below:

That "stepped" http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg287/krabbelaars/root/krabbel/smilies/emoties/emoties_161.gif~original area inside the turret ring area is a compartment I added for some lead weight.
https://tw.yimg.com/i/tw/blog/smiley/30.gif Yeah I know, not necessary-but well, I even took the time to balance it.
So I can honestly say this going to be a well balanced
http://www.smilchat.net/smiley/astrologie/astro7.gif project..... eh?

Hey DM, your usual fine work on that mutant Tiger! And interesting note there on shell ejection hatch- I'd built a Porshe Tiger II a few years ago and didn't even know about that.

Hey Gamera,

Thanks for your comments.

Here's a little more background.

                  http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/jobs/teacher-smiley-emoticon.gif

A Tale of Two Kitties will be interesting to all

in the Tiger realm. The production Tiger II used

the 50 Porsche styled turrets that were already manufactured for the prototype VK45. After that project was cancelled all Tiger II's used the Henschell turret.
The Dragon VK kit did not have the original ejection port installed as it should have been for the VK.45. After the VK project was terminated the Porsche styled turrets were modified for the production Tiger II. One of the many mods included welding that port shut.

There'll be more on that subject as we go along here http://forums.totalwar.org/vb/images/smilies/gc/gc-anxious.gif

7.   When placing the wheel on the screw just press the screw into the soft plastic and turn clockwise to get the wheel started. After a few complete turns, run the single nut up against the wheel by hand watching to keep the wheel perpendicular to the screw.

8.
If the hole is bigger or smaller, then use the same setup with a larger or smaller screw.
9.   Don't press real hard with what you're sanding with because you CAN make it pop off.
10. Once you get a few of these made up for different sizes, you'll actually enjoy sanding those wheels.

Works fine for me folks..........
(the texture on that wheel surface is another story, some other time)

Give it a spin and come around to a simpler way of grinding off those nasty 'ol seams.

Since When ?

You know that is a good idea . I think I will try it the next time i do an armor piece. P.S.It works well on the layered hard plastic wheels on softskins too .Like the autos in 1/35.   T.B.

DM,

Great idea, I have used shish kabob skewers then cut the wood down and placed it in a dremel which worked to a point. It would not work on all road wheels.

This is something I will try. Thanks for the inspiration!

Next up is a little bit of information about the special turret for this particular vehicle.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b232/gluetank/Porsche%20VK4502%20Vorne/Tank%20buildup/unpainted%20Porsche%20turret/original%20porsche%20%20turret%20top_zps3tsxhcqu.png

The kit turret was the standard Porsche turret, but incorrect in many ways for the VK version of the Tiger II.
http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/yellow-hd/silly-face-smiley-emoticon.gif Unless I've missed it, I haven't seen a built plastic kit of this model anywhere with the proper turret modifications added.

http://www.netanimations.net/Moving-animated-eyes-finger-pointing-down.gif

                             The turret mods

1  This turret was specifically designed by Krupp for this vehicle (actually, all the Tiger II turrets were built by Krupp while the HULLS were built by Henschel).

2  The kit front and aft turret roof plates are the production series Tiger II 40mm plates. The turrets were originally built with 25mm thick front and aft roof plates as found on the V1 - V3 Tiger II prototypes and the three VK45.02 (P) vehicles. With the exception of a cut out on the front edge of the armor plate creating a splash guard these plates sat flush with the turret front and side armor plates and left a 15mm step up to the 40mm center turret roof plate.

3  There is a thin square deflector bar that sits across on top edge of the turrets front armor plate splash guard I removed.

4  The forward blade sight mounted on the front left side of the turret roof was deleted.

5  The cover for the spent cartridge rounds ejection port along with the curved rain guard welded to the rear turret roof was removed and the hole filled.

6  The center 40mm turret roof plate that houses both the commander's cupola, loaders hatch and ventilation fan housing needs to have the close defense weapon removed and the hole filled as well as the drain channel to the right of the loader's hatch. I made the armored cover for the ventilator as the kit only supplies you with the water tight ventilator cover.

7  The commander's cupola was not welded to the turret roof. It was bolted down to the roof and sat in a shallow farrow cut out on the 40mm center turret roof.

8  Use the commander's cupola without the drain channels.

9  Removed the 4 large rivets on the hinges of the loader's hatch cover as these were not present on any of these vehicles. Only when used on the Tiger I.

10 Deleted the 3 sockets for the jig boom on the turret roof.

11 The rain guards over both the binocular gun sight and machine gun opening on the turret front plate were removed.

12 The handle on the outside of the rear turret hatch is not used.

13 Added two conical bolts just in front of the hole for the commander's viewing port on the left side of the turret. Also added a flat circular plug and welding around the plug for the commander's viewing port in the curved area of the turret. A decision had been made to plug this hatch.

Here's what you can do with
a piece of aluminum wire and a nickel to form it around.

The metal gun track looks more realistic when the paint is worn/chipped away.

Yeah, I put the track on wrong the first time...had to move it over two blocks ccw to make it right.

Eric,
Thanks for the approval!  Guess you could also call it a "Cheap Trick" too.

That was just my five cents worth.

Don't use one of these.  Might not work.                                                        http://www.wooden-nickel.com/images/nickel-f.png

Well, a lot of people like to build 'em "outt'a the box".
Personally I find it extremely rewarding to get "outt'a the rut", be creative and push my limits in all ways - not to mention getting more

I'm back at the keyboard.
                       heh http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/ww173/prestonjjrtr/Smileys%20Holidays/Halloween/music31.gif heh

Next, some wheel and track madness.

Took the wheels off my wheel jig, stuck 'em on a stick and painted them up a bit........
just gott'a  LÓ¦V

Next time I'm going to paint 'em on that jig I made while spinning them with the drill....
That should be interesting.

I put the drive wheels on some chopsticks and then went to town with a matching finish.
A little more touch up needed here.

I put out a post/request a while back here titled "Cleats".Those are just a few extra plastic kit tracks from an Elephant or a Ferdinand that Eric (Tigerman)

volunteered to send to me for this project.

The connecting pins are made from stretched sprue.

She's coming out real nice. Just wanted to ask out that the road wheels. On the Porsche series I know that they were rubber rimmed, I have seen and touched the ones on the APG elephant and they are very thin rubber that is secured by being sandwiched in place by the preforated faceplate that is bolted to the wheel hub. I see lots of people on the net painting them as steel, was there a steel variant of this wheel developed?

First, the obvious historyhttp://www.kolobok.us/smiles/artists/vishenka/l_happy_tired.gif

 T
he Elefant was a Germanhttp://files-cloud.enjin.com/smiley/41206_Smile_harp.gif?0tank hunter originally built as the “Ferdinand” in honor of its designer, Ferdinand Porsche. The design evolved from cruder, improvised designs of 1941-42, as well as the later (but problem-ridden) Marder designs. Porsche created the chassis from the 90 Porsche
Tiger I models already built complete with new tracks and an all-steel wheel arrangement.

The following starts on page four at
(http://files-cloud.enjin.com/smiley/52936_52936_dntknw.gif?0 I never know if the direct linking will work properly on this forum like it used to, so you'll probably have to copy and paste it):

www.scribd.com/doc/226704523/Ferdinand-Elefant-1-pdf

The Porsche entry for the VK4501 was called Type  101 or SonderfahrzeugII at the factory, but the electrifying effect of the Leopard name given to their previous tank inspired the christening of the new one with another predatory feline name, the "Tiger".
The Leopard was similar to the porsche Tiger in some technical details, but its road wheels were rubber rimmed, of increased diameter and the return rollers were deleted. To economize on copper (but mostly to counter balance the heavy turret) the drive sprockets andtheir electric motors on the Porsche Tiger were relocated to the rear of the hull. Without this change, the center of balance would have been too far forward. The Porsche suspension was still insufficiently developed and simply unsuitable for such a heavy vehicle. Six road wheels on widely spaced bogies made the ground pressure (already much higher than the Henschel interlocking wheels layout) vary along the length of the track, resulting in the tank bogging in the soft ground. However, the VK4501 (P) was still suspended with the revolutionary Porsche longitudinal torsion bar system, resulting in constant breaking of the bars under field conditions.

The Tigers' weight made their repair extremely difficult. Despite the relocation of the drive sprocket to the rear, the front sprocket still carried teeth and was nearly identical to the rear one. The purpose of such an arrangement was to facilitate the adjustment of the slack track (the long length of which was hanging unsupported over the road wheels).

And so,
The friction of the hanging tracks guide teeth on the road wheels quickly wore out their rubber tires, so the road wheel design had to be changed.
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii269/theogrit/1sm049ignore.gif~originalThe new wheels had steel tires mounted on springs with rubber ring bushings-to some extent inspired by the similar construction of the Soviet all-steel wheels used on http://cdn-frm-eu.wargaming.net/wot/eu/4.1/style_emoticons/wot/Smile-playing.gif T-34 and KV tanks. These had much more service life in them, at the same time reducing the need for rubber which was already in very short supply.Rubber conserving road wheels were frequently used on various later models of German tanks. This was about the only feature of the Porsche tank that saw any wide distribution during the war.
And having said all that..........http://cdn-frm-us.wargaming.net/4.5/style_emoticons/wot/Smile_bush.gifhttp://r26.imgfast.net/users/2612/80/23/19/smiles/716630.gifDON"T SHOOT!

http://gotmobile.freeforums.org/images/smilies/detective.gif Here's this old post from over 11  years ago pertaining to this subject.

http://www.litlib.net/abc/smiles/ca.gif All of the Elefant/Ferdinand, etc. road wheels are steel rimmed. Same as the King Tiger, and late Tiger I, etc.
All these wheels DO
have an inner rubber ring (they're called resilient steel wheels) and are based on the wheels
used on the Russian KV-1.

http://www.jr-richscooterdoc.com/XsmileP/X39.gifAny book on the Elefant will describe the steel wheels and will have clear photos. You can tell a thick rubber
tire (like the Panzer IV - as shown) from a thin metal rim fairly easily.

https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/13/26/dc/1326dcc12a0abe98a7ed9ab5fe0703d1.jpghttps://c2.staticflickr.com/4/3436/3371791932_11774f2b7e_z.jpg

http://r31.imgfast.net/users/3114/13/76/21/smiles/1392196029.gif I've been doing research on the VK45.02(P) project long before the kit I'm working on came out.

So respectfully, I can't dispute what you actually experienced with a hands-on encounter with, but I have to wonder if possibly what you saw/touched might possibly be some kind of protective coating applied to the wheels to help preserve them. Sometimes those restoration projects http://www.thorforums.com/forums/images/smilies/sk/facepalm.gif aren't quite accurate.

http://yoursmiles.org/msmile/think/m1702.gif It seems that such a thin rubber layer applied to the load bearing surface of a wheel constantly in contact with
that all steel track surface would wear out rather quickly.

http://cdn-frm-us.wargaming.net/4.5/style_emoticons/wot/Smile_amazed.gif In the picture below you can see a metallic sheen on the thin edges of the road wheels.....  and the shine
matches the shine on the high parts of the tracks and track guides, although the shine on the forward drive sprocket hub looks more to me like shiny new paint.

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2565/5795236768_7622f866dd_b.jpg

And in another example; the track horns, front drive sprocket teeth and that metallic shine on the front inner road wheel.
Notice that shiny road wheel is an inner wheel close to the hull and is in the darkest
location facing away from the sun, yet it's shiny - metallic looking.

http://i.imgur.com/yAZCaOZ.jpg
Here again, the last two inner road wheels on the right and matching wear on the front sprocket.

               ↓
http://s24.postimg.org/ag0u6kik5/Screen_Hunter_1635_Jul_24_20_28.jpg

 This picture
http://cdn-frm-us.wargaming.net/4.5/style_emoticons/wot/Smile_coin.gif pretty much clears it up.
These wheels are definitely steel http://cdn-frm-us.wargaming.net/4.5/style_emoticons/wot/Smile_sceptic.gif rimmed.
              ↓
http://s2.postimg.org/jap4bsh3d/Screen_Hunter_1591_Jul_24_20_11.jpg

With the chassis from the 90 Porsche Tiger I models already built with new tracks and an all-steel wheel arrangement it would seem that the example at Aberdeen was in some way or another unique in itself.

Although a different wheel, these steel rimmed tiger wheels would look to be rubber, but we all know they weren't.

DM, great couple of posts there. The info about the road wheels is great, really nice stuff. I was reading it and remembere going to Bovington tank museum some years ago and seeing the Tiger II which had a disected road wheel next to it. I managed to find an image online and you can see the rubber inside.

And i live the finish on the tools, some stunning work. I have used clear sprue before for the light, but not though of useing one of those. Might try that on the E-100

Great posts, thank you.

Bish

http://yoursmiles.org/csmile/goodbye/c0203.gif Thanks for putting that one up Bish......   I'd seen it long ago and didn't add it to my picture inventory.

                  I'll surely hang on to
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s50/kimber47/Smileys/balloony.gif~originalthat one this time!

I can certainly see how the term "rubber-rimmed" could confuse people and lead them to believe that rubber-rimmed would refer to the actual contact area of the track/wheel surfaces....  where else would one logically think it would be?
That dissected road wheel is just the thing to clear up the mistaken placement of the "rubber ring bushings" or "inner rubber ring" on the steel road wheels used on German heavy tanks.

Also, thanks for your appreciation of my efforts Bish.

No problem DM. I think i did take a pic of that wheel myself the first time i went. But i have lost all my pics since then, real downer. I need to try and get back there at some point.

I can't say i have ever heard those wheels reffere to as rubber rimmed, but i can see how it can cause confusion.

As a hobby, I do this when I have nothing else to do.

Actually it's not as much about patience as it is about taking my time. Good detail comes with learning patience and http://s4654.storage.proboards.com/5644654/i/c2ELSt7daPyF1J1zw8QZ.gif patience is a big part of this hobby - it's just a hobby to me (including the smileys and the formatting), I'm not inclined to crank out models to fill the house with, but models to attract interest and inspire creativity in others also.
 Why knock out so
http://www.animated-smileys.com/emoticons/animated-smileys-sport-120.gif so models when you can put all that effort in to one serious composition. At todays prices, it seems wasteful to hurry a model just to get it done.

This is just incredible work. I've always built straight out of the box too, but mostly because I've just never known where to start. Actually, that's the main reason I joined the forums here. Can't wait to see further progress on this model.

I gotta say the work you put into your post graphics is as amazing as your building skills. Just excellent.

This is just incredible work. I've always built straight out of the box too, but mostly because I've just never known where to start. Actually, that's the main reason I joined the forums here. Can't wait to see further progress on this model.

Toshi
Mind boggling work.  This is far beyond me!  Amazing!

Hey Wannabe and Toshi,
Thank you for the input. Just be creative by expanding beyond out of the box and give it a try.  Works for me.

This really isn't a "bridge too far". Just look how much Bish has progressed with that super

I was going to include an update tonight, but it seems that Photobucket has messed http://www.millan.net/minimations/smileys/babysmiley2.gifitself.

Again, thanks guys.

 Apparently, it's my http://www.laie-smileys.com/tele.gif browser that's messed http://www.millan.net/minimations/smileys/babysmiley2.gifhttp://www.aussieghosts.com/forum/images/smilies/stinks.gifitself.

http://www.sherv.net/cm/emo/angry/smiley.gif That's just plumb irritating.

I can see everybody's pictures, just not mine.

Dang, now I gott'a upgrade my system and browser (which I don't want to do because I'm comfortable with it) before I can see what I'm doing.

So hang on........ it's soon on the way.

I can only echo what DM says here. Its all a matter of pushing yourself at a pace that you are comfortable with. I put things off for years concerned i would not pull it off. Tree's, scratchbuilding, Urban scenes. But none of them turned out as hard as i expected and the results were better than i could of hoped. Of course, there is room for improvment, lessons learned, but that happens with every build no matter how long you have been doing it.

Just don't be afraid to fail. If it goes wrong, so be it. I think my next challenge will be vehicle.

And DM, thank you for the compliment, that is high praise indeed.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

   http://hvac-talk.com/vbb/images/smilies/putergreet013.gifHey 'yall.
Now,  http://www.animatedimages.org/data/media/318/animated-computer-smiley-image-0039.gif  after that infernal browser episode.

                  http://yoursmiles.org/msmile/compgame/m0307.gif Here we go again.

Well, it's been a while since my last update, but I recently got me
a new
http://orig06.deviantart.net/9bf2/f/2009/290/1/a/shooting_smiley_by_killerbeat.gifColt carbine with a stack of accessories and I've just
been having "too much fun with that".

I hope 'ya can understand getting a bit carried away with it.......
'specially with it being Fall and all,....  here down south.
                                  http://www.picgifs.com/smileys/smileys-and-emoticons/autumn/smileys-autumn-732782.gif
  Meanwhile,http://www.tiptopglobe.com/skin/smile/kat2/smileys-free-download-3317.gif

back on the farm.

I'm still all over the place with this project guys...........  http://emoticoner.com/files/emoticons/smileys/run-around-smiley.gif

Now, back to where we left the the turret.http://www.animateit.net/data/media/86/200.gif

All hairsprayed, and headed in the panzergray way......
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b232/gluetank/Porsche%20VK4502%20Vorne/painted%20Porsche%20turret/PIC_zpsoas7vprj.jpg
Next,
A little further down the road (
after a bit more http://orig06.deviantart.net/9bf2/f/2009/290/1/a/shooting_smiley_by_killerbeat.gif gunplay).

Details relevant to this version.

The turret was specifically designed by Krupp for this vehicle.

Here's more detail on that last picture.

1.  The kit front and aft turret roof plates are the production series Tiger II 40mm plates. The turrets were originally
built with 25mm thick front and aft roof plates as
found on the V1 - V3 Tiger II prototypes and the three VK45.02
     (P) vehicles. With the exception of a cut out on the front edge of the armor plate creating a splash guard
these plates
sat flush with the turret front and side armor plates and left a 15mm step up to the 40mm center turret roof plate.

2.  There is a thin square deflector bar that sits across on top edge of the turrets front armor plate splash guard that
     needs to be removed.

3.  The forward blade sight mounted on the front left side of the turret roof needs to be removed.

4. The cover for the spent cartridge rounds ejection port along with the curved rain guard welded to the rear turret roof
will have to be removed and the hole filled.

5.  The center 40mm turret roof plate that houses both the commander's cupola, loaders hatch and ventilation fan housing
needs to have the close defense weapon removed
and the hole filled as well as the drain channel to the right of the
loader's hatch. You'll have to acquire the armored cover for the ventilator as the kit only supplies you with
the water
     tight ventilator cover.

6.  The commander's cupola was not welded to the turret roof. It was bolted down to the roof and sat in a shallow furrow
cut out on the 40mm center turret roof.

7.   Use the commander's cupola without the drain channels.

8.   I
removed the 4 large rivets on the hinges of the loader's hatch cover as these were not present on any of these
vehicles. Only when used on the Tiger I.

9.   Remove the 3 sockets for the jig boom on the turret roof.

10. The rain guards over both the binocular gun sight and machine gun opening on the turret front plate were removed.

11.  The handle on the outside of the rear turret hatch is not used.

12.  I added two conical bolts just in front of the hole for the commander's viewing port on the left side of the turret. Also
create a flat circular plug and add
welding around the plug for the commander's viewing port in the curved area of the
turret. A decision had been made to plug this hatch.

13.  I used the supplied aluminum monobloc 8.8cm gun barrel.

Getting some collective perspective before progressing further.

Dullcoted and kind'a grim lookin' eh?

Cupola and barrel not secured yet.

Close up surface texture.......... this thing's growin' hair..........

Some buff washing up high

Got most of those shell impacts all mellowed out..... several shrapnel scrapes and scratches to work on yet.......

Some dark washing down low

And yet a bit more dusting and color adjustment.

Close up...........   still gott'a kill some of that shine.

Ta Daaaaaaa.........

And now, for a bit of fun........

I know the periscopes didn't light up but it was something fun & so simple I just had to fool around with it.

Pending some very minor turret work.......  it now begins to come together.

And yet, there's a ton more of stuff where that came from...... stay tuned.

                                      So now,

Modelcrazy,
    Thank you.

Actually, it's pretty heavy. I mounted some lead weights in the hull to give it some heft and distribute the weight firmly and evenly on the tracks.

https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRddInn6k3ZX3AdES2AGbuxrIM-YoahJv5zxbCqVjm0Y3vYcDLl I've been working on something simple, so as not to take attention away  from the main subject here.

Here    we       go ➛➛➛➛➛

Got the foam packing out of a recent
https://smileyshack.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/ssc_boxedin.gif?w=150&h=120 box from ebay.
I did a bit of doodling to get an idea of how I wanted to present this.

Before the doodles.......

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b232/gluetank/Porsche%20VK4502%20Vorne/Groundwork/Brick%20walls2016-10-28%20at%2011.25.08%20PM_zpsv6q2u14q.png

And the day af'ta the doodles.......

Not sure if I'm gon'na use'em http://www.buddy-icons.info/img/smile/1514.gif though.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b232/gluetank/Porsche%20VK4502%20Vorne/Groundwork/PICT0208_zpsqyr8qwv8.jpg

I like the brick and granite on the left......    still not sure yet.

Next is a piece of 8 x 10 foam board all laid out.
I went to town on it

                                http://www.smileysandemoticons.com/smiley-town.gif

.............
or should I say to "
Kummersdorf" -  hint, hint.............
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b232/gluetank/Porsche%20VK4502%20Vorne/Groundwork/PICT0090_zpssfpokado.jpg

Further down the road......
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b232/gluetank/Porsche%20VK4502%20Vorne/Groundwork/PICT0087_zpsblbhuf6w.jpg
After much patience - later.

I brush painted it in brown acrylic hobby paint from wal-mart, it doesn't take that long.

Never use aerosol laquer based paint on styro-foam,

http://www.jimbronson.com/Jerry/jerryspray.gif

unless you've thoroughly
futured it beforehand.
It's a disappearing act if you don't future it first.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b232/gluetank/Porsche%20VK4502%20Vorne/Groundwork/PICT0262_zpsegrx2vbt.jpg
Enamel based paints might/should be ok, but I haven't tried it.

Next a heavy http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/3/3_10_5.gifwash of raw umber acrylic craft paint.

Then, http://www.demnia.nl/images/ranks/thief.gif I took out some  blocks of pavement

                                 and

I hand painted various surface and wear details. The
unfinished areas were painted with
acrylic hobby craft paint.
I'll deal with that later.

Dirt and dust will tone it down and fill in the cracks and spaces.

And, I tried out another wall option I did in addition to the first two I worked out.

Added some slight scrapes along the wall from errant traffic.

I think this will work better as it will give more overall color variation.
I'll save the others for another time.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b232/gluetank/Porsche%20VK4502%20Vorne/Groundwork/0270_zps07hggro3.png

Then added a bit of plant life http://smileys.newbeginningsnetwork.com/piwigo/galleries/ACTIVITIES/gardening/plant.gifon top of that stone wall before permanent installation.
http://smileys.smilchat.net/emoticon/seasons/automne/tas-feuilles.gifThere'll be a lot more greenery to go on here toohttp://i.dama.cz/s/e704.gif

Time for a picture break.........

http://www.4smileys.com/smileys/cool-smileys/smiley-with-glasses28.gif  Get yer glasses and read on.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/5c/PzDMunch.svg/160px-PzDMunch.svg.pngBy the spring of 1945 Germany had become a battleground. At the
Wehrmacht weapons testing grounds at Kummersdorf the various test departments
began evacuating important materials and documents and burning the rest. At the
beginning of March 1945 the “Kummersdorf Panzer Battalion was formed from elements
of the Technischen Versuchs Kompanie “Technical Test Company” it had a mixed complement
of vehicles. [On the 14 March 1945, part of the panzer battalion Kummersdorf was
absorbed into I./Panzer-Regiment 29 which was part of the newly formed Panzer-Division
“Müncheberg” a division which itself was formed on the 5th of March 1945.

An OKH order dated 18 April 1945 shows that the Kummersdorf Abteilung and the
1/29 Panzer Regiment were organized into an ad-hoc regiment. The Kummersdorf or 1st
battalion had a staff, a staff company, a Tiger Company (formerly 3/Kummersdorf Panzer
Battalion), a Panther company, a mixed Panzer company, and a supply company.]

The Inspector-General of Armored Forces mentioned the formation of Kummersdorf
panzer company {new unit, formed out of the logistics battalion at Kummersdorf.} during
the course of a meeting of a briefing at Führer Headquarters on 31 March 1945. It was
organised into three tank platoons (partially mobile), one armored reconnaissance platoon
(not mobile). The vehicles were taken from those kept on hand for test purposes. They
included a Panzer VI Tiger II (Sd.Kfz. 182), a Jagdtiger, two American Sherman tanks, an
Italian P 40(i) tank, and several B IV heavy explosive charge carriers armed with machine
guns. {one Tiger II, one Jagdtiger, four Panthers, two Panzer N, one Panzer III, one
Nashorn, one Hummel, two Sherman’s, and one immobile Porsche Tiger 8.8-centimeter
L/71 main gun }

According to a priority telex message dated 4 April 1945, at least part of the panzer
company was supposed to be transferred into the Dresden area. {A report on the 19
April 1945 stated the Kummersdorf panzer company was on the march to Luchau. A final
report dated 21 April 1945 stated the battalion staff and the company had been attached
to Kampfgruppe MÖWS.} The non-mobile elements of Kummersdorf panzer company, including
a Tiger tank with the Porsche turret {Porsche Tiger 8.8-centimeter L/71 main gun} saw
action at the end of April in the fighting south east of the proving ground.  Another tank
unit was formed at Kummersdorf using the civilian drivers, including Behnisch, whose name
appears several times. According to a note dated 21 April 1945, this unit was supposed to go
into action south of Zossen as part of Kampfgruppe Kaether. With a total of 42 vehicles,
including at least one Panzer V Panther, it set out in the direction of Baruth. Troops of the
1st Ukrainian Front advancing from Golssen had to be held up. A battle developed near Baruth
in which the makeshift tank unit was completely wiped out. (Baruth is approximately
7 kilometers from village of Horstwalde following text must be dated on or about the 21st
April 1945)

At Kummersdorf, the battle commander of Kummersdorf put together a Volkssturm unit
from the remaining men. It saw action on the road to Horstwalde. A damaged Tiger was
hauled out of the garages of the Verskraft to bolster its strength. There was a brief
exchange of fire with red army troops during which a T34 was knocked out. Fighting was
also recorded in the area of the army workers settlement, where 88-mm anti-aircraft
guns destroyed another tank. Members of the Volkssturm wielding Panzerfaust anti-tank
weapons destroyed several Russian tanks on the road from Scönefled to Gottow.
(Approximately 3km East of Horstwalde village) The defensive ring around Kummersdorf,
which had been broken in several places then disintegrated.

Conclusion
It’s clear from the text above that the Technischen Versuchs Kompanie “Technical
Test Company” left their immobile tank behind when they were ordered south. The tank
is referred to as a “Tiger tank with a Porsche turret” and “Porsche Tiger 8.8-centimeter
L/70 main gun” This could well be nothing more than an early Tiger II with a Porsche turret.
But you never know, and just because there are no pictures of the tank at Kummersdorf
and no photographs taken in or around Horstwalde by the Russians does not rule out that
it could have been a VK4502. People have pointed out that if the Tiger which fought there
was indeed a VK4502 then it would have surely drawn the interest of a Russian Army
photographer.

BUT to this day no Russian Army photographs of the knocked out VK4501 command tank
have ever surfaced. This one off rare tank, (lost in 1944) you would have thought would have
been photographed even if it was just a wreck. It’s very likely that once engaged - the single
tank defending Horstwalde would have been destroyed, if the tank had been wrecked - then
perhaps the remains may well have been over looked by the Russians just like the VK4501,
especially when you consider that the Maus V1 prototype and a blown up VK4502 were lying
just a few kilometres  away.

Still needs a bit more color adjustment.... and that greenery I mentioned.

Well, i imagine its somewhat lighter than plaster. Stick out tongue

Hey Bish,

http://www.dawgshed.com/images/smilies/yesss.gif that's how I done it.

It's all done in three sections. The road, the stone wall facing, and that block of styro glued on behind that wall.

It's tricky to do
http://www.laie-smileys.com/rubik.gif but it's extremely cheap, simple and it has no significant weight at all.

For the wall:
On a thin piece of styro press down and slowly draw the wall out as you want with
                                         http://static6.depositphotos.com/1003098/572/i/110/depositphotos_5722075-Carpenters-pencil.jpg
a dulled-down carpenters pencil, then use a similar (dental) tool such as this (below) to deepen and enhance the crevices between the stones.
                                   (this end)⤵
                                 http://2.wlimg.com/product_images/bc-full/dir_114/3393645/dental-burnishers-pocket-probes-scalers-art-i_p_2138479_437461.jpg

http://www.4smileys.com/smileys/cool-smileys/smiley-with-glasses35.gif
Next it's just a matter of imprinting some rough texture and painting the wall how you want it.

http://static.diary.ru/picture/1979858.gifthe road works this way.
1. Lay it out with a ruler and pencil and cut away the relief area on each side.
2. Using your imagination imprint a texture onto the surface.
3. Now coat it with future first and let dry thoroughly.

(The future will prevent it from crumbling as you cut it)

If it still starts to crumble, coat it again. Remember that after you slice it, you will have to coat it again if you use any paint that will be absorbed into those cuts and be invasive to the foam.
Test on scraps if you aren't sure.

4. I used a SHARP #11 blade in a tedious alternating bayonet/sawing fashion.

Now, if you think "that" is http://www.animated-gifs.eu/category_emoticons/smilies-hairy-3/0001.gif hairy - just wait 'til you see what I'm adding nexthttp://www.sherv.net/cm/emo/funny/2/upside-down-banana-smiley-emoticon.gif

that got me thinking.........

                    https://s.aolcdn.com/webmail-static/webmail/161116.1303/images/basic/spin.gif

I'll build an old well for a bit more collateral interest.

So, using that same old white styro and a small slice of a foam composite (that's used to pose artificial flowers) to serve as a concrete foundation - I built myself a weary looking semblance of a deserted well.

The text below is taken from "The Wehrmacht Weapons Testing Grounds at Kummersdorf" by Wolfgang Fleischer P178, 179
.

1.
Detail taken from Tigers in Combat II Stackpole Books P335.
2.
And more text added from the web even more detailed than the book.

By the spring of 1945 Germany had become a battleground. At the Wehrmacht weapons testing grounds at Kummersdorf the various test departments began evacuating important materials and documents and burning the rest. At the beginning of March 1945 the  Kummersdorf Panzer Battalion was formed from elements of the Technischen Versuchs Kompanie “Technical Test Company” it had a mixed complement of vehicles. On the 14 March 1945, part of the panzer battalion Kummersdorf was absorbed into I./Panzer-Regiment 29 which was part of the newly formed Panzer-Division “Müncheberg” a division which itself was formed on the 5th of March 1945.

“Müncheberg” http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b232/gluetank/Porsche%20VK4502%20Vorne/Title%20Headings/Munchberg_zpsxlgr6znj.png Panzer-Division

An OKH order dated 18 April 1945 shows that the Kummersdorf Abteilung and the 1/29 Panzer Regiment were organized into an ad-hoc regiment. The Kummersdorf or 1st battalion had a staff, a staff company, a Tiger Company (formerly 3/Kummersdorf Panzer Battalion), a Panther company, a mixed Panzer company, and a supply company.
The Inspector-General of Armoured Forces mentioned the formation of Kummersdorf panzer company  (new unit, formed out of the logistics battalion at Kummersdorf) during the course of a meeting of a briefing at Führer Headquarters on 31 March 1945. It was organized into three tank platoons (partially mobile), one armoured reconnaissance platoon (not mobile). The vehicles were taken from those kept on hand for test purposes. They included a Panzer VI Tiger II (Sd.Kfz. 182), a Jagdtiger, two American Sherman tanks, an Italian P 40(i) tank, and several B IV heavy explosive charge carriers armed with machine guns. (one Tiger II, one Jagdtiger, four Panthers, two Panzer N, one Panzer III, one Nashorn, one Hummel, two Sherman’s, and one immobile Porsche Tiger 8.8-centimeter L/71 main gun )

According to a priority telex message dated 4 April 1945, at least part of the panzer company was supposed to be transferred into the Dresden area. (A report on the 19 April 1945 stated the Kummersdorf panzer company was on the march to Luchau. A final report dated 21 April 1945 stated the battalion staff and the company had been attached to Kampfgruppe MÖWS) The non-mobile elements of Kummersdorf panzer company, including a Tiger tank with the Porsche turret {Porsche Tiger 8.8-centimeter L/71 main gun} saw action at the end of April in the fighting south east of the proving ground.

Another tank unit was formed at Kummersdorf using the civilian drivers, including Behnisch, (my personal question.....
http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/hand-gestures/thinking-hard-smiley-emoticon.gifGünter Behnisch - a submarine commander?) whose name appears several times. According to a note dated 21 April 1945, this unit was supposed to go into action south of Zossen as part of Kampfgruppe Kaether. With a total of 42 vehicles, including at least one Panzer V Panther, it set out in the direction of Baruth. Troops of the 1st Ukrainian Front advancing from Golssen had to be held up. A battle developed near Baruth in which the makeshift tank unit was completely wiped out.

(Baruth is approximately 7 kilometers from the village of Horstwalde, the following text must be dated on or about the 21st April 1945)
At Kummersdorf, the battle commander of Kummersdorf put together a Volkssturm unit from the remaining men. It saw action on the road to Horstwalde. A damaged Tiger was hauled out of the garages of the Verskraft to bolster its strength. There was a brief exchange of fire with red army troops during which a T34 was knocked out. Fighting was also recorded in the area of the army workers settlement, where 88-mm anti-aircraft guns destroyed another tank. Members of the Volkssturm wielding Panzerfaust anti-tank weapons destroyed several Russian tanks on the road from Scönefled to Gottow. (Approximately 3km East of Horstwalde village) The defensive ring around Kummersdorf, which had been broken in several places, disintegrated.
It seems that one of the Porsche Type-180 vehicles may have been in operation since a Porsche Tiger with an 8.8cm L/71 gun is listed as part of the Panzer Kompanie Kummersdorf on March 1945. Virtually all operational Tiger II tanks, and prototypes issued for research and training were thrown into the fray at the end of the war.

Conclusion:
It’s clear from the text above that the Technischen Versuchs Kompanie “Technical Test Company” left their immobile tank behind when they were ordered south. The tank is referred to as a “Tiger tank with a Porsche turret” and “Porsche Tiger 8.8-centimeter L/70 main gun” To me this could well be nothing more than an early Tiger II with a Porsche turret. But you never know and just because there are no pictures of the tank at Kummersdorf and no photographs taken in or around Horstwalde by the Russians does not rule out that it could have been a VK4502. People have pointed out to me in the past that if the Tiger which fought there was indeed a VK4502 then it would have surely drawn the interest of a Russian Army photographer...

Using the assumption that this prototype tank was relegated to training purposes at Kummersdorf and (as mentioned before) could have been lost in the final defense of that area. Reports say that it was used somewhere south of Zossen as part of a Kampfgrup Kaether in the last days of the war.
As most of you probably know, the turrets used for the Tiger II production run (although referred to as Porsche and Henschel) were both in fact built by Krupp. Remember (mentioned earlier) that the VK 45.02 sported the initial version specifically made for this vehicle.

BUT to this day no Russian Army photographs of the knocked out VK4501 command tank have ever surfaced. This one off rare tank lost in 1944 surely would have been photographed even if it was just a wreck.
It’s very likely that once engaged the single tank defending Horstwalde would have been destroyed, if the tank had been wrecked then perhaps the remains may well have been over looked by the Russians just like the
VK4501, especially when you consider that the Maus V1 prototype and a blown up VK4502 were lying just  a few kilometers  away.

As a grim reminder of war........

A German Officer noted:

The dead are lying all over the bridge, and the wounded, with no one to pick them up. Civilians are trying to cross; they are shot down in rows. Our last armored cars are forcing their way across the bridge over and through piles of twisted human bodies. The bridge is flooded with blood. The terrible slaughter would not end. The rear guard falls apart. The command crumbles. Our losses are heavy.
Two last divisions did make it across the bridge.

The same officer made a final entry on May 4, 1945.

Behind us, Berlin in flames. Russian tanks all around us, and the incessant clatter of machine guns. We meet columns of refugees drifting about lost. They weep and ask for help. We are at the end ourselves. The unit breaks up. We try to go on in small groups.

The Muncheberg division broke up on May 4th, and its men tried to make their way to the west to surrender to the British and Americans. Only a few made good their escape, however, most fell into Russian captivity. After that disintegration (the last large formal body of public administration near Berlin) German control ceased to exist.

I've portrayed this subject in Panzer gray because of the lack of paint supplies (a training tank wouldn't really need the late war repaint as seriously as a forward unit) and I have placed it on an obscure road south of Zossen.

Hard to add any more superlatives to this stellar job, DM!  I know nothing about tanks, but it certainly looks like what I could imagine a tank taken out of some training depot might appear.

Would they have bothered to apply any ID or balkenkreuz?

Well GAF, this sounds like a case of "seeing is believing".

 I read somewhere that
at that stage of the war they didn't display the balkenkreuz
or (or since this one was the only one of it's kind) turret numbers either - however, while
possibly being a training tank and still in panzer gray it wouldn't be too totally out of the question.

I'm just showing it in a "bottom of the barrel" state.

Glad 'ya like it.
Thank you for your generous comment.

OK.............. http://www.laie-smileys.com/libro2.gif  here's some reading to jumpstart your weekend.

http://www.laie-smileys.com/tele.gifAfter doing the original version of the Porsche Tiger II, I thought
I'd do a bit of a stretch with it using the Henschell turret - which was the
eventual choice for the chosen majority of the units built.

Being aware of the reasons that the VK Porsche Tiger II wasn't chosen
as the successor to the Tiger I (and just for the fun of it)
I wanted to pair
up the Henschell Turret with the Porsche chassis/hull as a "might have been"
subject - often referred to as a "what if".

 So
I'm now jumping into the alternate reality of WWII.

Reworked this old Italeri wheel from the Elephant kit.
It'll wind up being a spare wheel minus the hub.

The result after separating the hub from the rim (using my  trusty hand drill) and adding the mounting holes, some primer red, a bit of chipping with some bare metal showing.

I've looked extensively over the net and haven't seen a model of a correctly VK built in this configuration.

Without presenting the "shell-trap" feature of the original design. The Henschell turret would surely
have presented an (
http://www.millan.net/minimations/smileys/indubitablysmile.gif) indubitable wall of steel in conjunction with the front armor of the hull.

The turret came from a Tamiya build from long ago. I stripped off all the paint and added some slight
modifications such as the spare wheel and attachment hardware, relocated track hanger positions and
the camouflage attachment points.

Married it ⚤ to the hull.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b232/gluetank/Porsche%20VK4502%20Vorne/Henschell%20progress/0006_zpsxlbdxtnw.png

I think this turret looks really cool in this hypothetical combination.

Thanks for those high marks here Dwayne.

Don't worry, you're worthy and you sound intelligent!!

I'm glad you like it - there's more coming.

I've been having a LOT of trouble getting pictures
loaded on Photobucket for the next update.

Meanwhile, where should I send that penny?

Awesome, I'd swear she was real metal. And the 'Henshel' turret does look neat fitted on there.

Hey gang,

http://www.laie-smileys.com/reloj.giftime for another update.

I cut and split some used scotchbrite and pulled each layer apart to thin it out.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b232/gluetank/Porsche%20VK4502%20Vorne/Henschell%20progress/PICT0075_zps4gile9p1.jpg

The purpose is to create simple vines and fill behind the leaves giving depth when applied to the turret and elsewhere.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b232/gluetank/Porsche%20VK4502%20Vorne/Henschell%20progress/PICT0080_zpsu0fyg2aa.jpg

Don't know where I got this stuff (it's plastic-like sponge) but the vine-like pattern is just what I need.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b232/gluetank/Porsche%20VK4502%20Vorne/Henschell%20progress/PICT0079_zps9zniduzb.jpg

I cut it in a manner that would allow me to stretch it out.

I'm going to have to add some more lead weight to the forward portion of the hull to get those movable bogies positioned better.

I used some gauze and string for that gaggle of camouflage midway down the barrel.

Now that's very cool! I'd never have thought to use the Scotch-Brite to pad out the leaves. Very clever!!! Yes

Only one question, no foliage on top to camo the panzer from Allied aircraft?

For hanging out here Gamera.

I'd thought about it. Good question.
A
ll traffic in and out of this particular vehicle had to be gained through the turret hatches. Navigating all the inherent topside fixtures in addition to the leaves and branches would surely impede any urgent movement, increasing the risk for injury, not to mention obscuring the periscopes.

And then again, heck......
https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSooag4suaA0gX3guXYxmGTrSQY_KN5SjK_VwXLjoBNagiYKgN2
I just didn't want to cover up all of the turret.

Bish

Certainly worth waiting for, really fine work there Steve, just superb.

I like the H turret myself.

http://skypesmileyscodes.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/niel-60x60.jpg.........been cooling my heels.
The H turret seems to be the popular choice.

         http://www.laie-smileys.com/victoria.gifThank you Bish.

Steve,

I don't get around to forums much these days---I'm writing a lot of articles though--but I had to stop in and say that you've never disappointed, and this double-build is no exception. Masterful work, inspiring artistry and vision; boy, you're going to make a lot of those "realism" guys apoplectic, and that's something to smile about right there, lol. Really fabulous work here. you should be proud. Take some time off and recharge your batteries and come back with another jaw-dropper. I know you will. Steve, I've been getting caught up on the forum posts and I came across your Two Kitties build(s)! Bow Down  What amazing and lifelike work on them!  Even though I take off to pursue other hobbies, this is the kind of stuff that inspires me to return to the bench and keep building!  I'm still trying to figure out how you got the dirt on the hull to look so realistic!! Hmm

Great, Great work sir!  I'm looking forward to more of your work!

I've been cleaning out my photobucket images and working on re-posting some of them here soon (but on a limited scale).

I don't think I could ever get them back on here in the correct order.

I've kicked the bucket permanently                               https://nikszo.files.wordpress.com/2013/01/kickdbucket.jpg

and will be moving on.

Probably be a while before I'll be back here..... but I WILL be back.

Thanks to both of you gents for your generous comments and following along on this.

Thank you a lot Ernest,
Likewise, I've also been trying to catch up here while also dealing with the effects of that malicious photobucket sneak attack.  I too also have other secondary interests  http://www.laie-smileys.com/halterofilia.gif that take me away from here, but this is the one true hobby I always return to. Commentshttp://www.laie-smileys.com/diario.gif such as yours and from others here motivate me to reload and fire again  - http://www.mcbroom.biz/forum/mods/smileys/images/whistle.gif semi of course. As far as the dirt goes........Well, "FELIX CULPA" (translated: a mistake or disaster that actually ends up having surprisingly beneficial consequences).

Hey Karl,

Your posting with that M1 brought my attention to the last time you were active on the armor site here. Being that I overlooked your comment - Aw man, I'm really Sorry 'bout that......   so here I am.

Photobucket has gotten me totally derailed but I'm finally getting back a reply to you. I'm glad you could take a few minutes to express your opinion ( now I think I'm gonna need a bigger hat ) and yes, I need to recharge and/or get a NEW battery altogether.
To prevent another pearl harbor style image hosting attack from ever happening again, I've been working on re-posting some of the various VK images (plus a ton of other unrelated stuff) on three free web hosting sites and getting familiar with their various protocols. That's the way I'll be doing it from now on - one initial site and two backups.
I'm going to try and add those pictures later today if nothing comes up. At least when going to view this thread there will be some kitties to look at (although they will be out of context with the way they were originally posted).

For now, I've got to go work on the carhttp://www.netanimations.net/animation_car3%20(9).gif and install new faucets in both bathrooms.

                                        http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/jobs/plumber-accident-smiley-emoticon.gif

My next model project (I have two in mind) just might show up on one of the other forum categories here on Finescale  ~  and it will be interesting.

And as always,
