Thanks.

It does take time to mask around the breech and I do have many sizes of masking tape in a container from 0.5 to 40mm.

I do need to repair some of the base colour on one side of the breech where it has come away with the tape. Maybe I didn't give the paint/primer long enough to cure completel.

to get the effect you see in the photo the primer is stylnrez grey and directly onto that goes AK Xtreme Metal Stainless Steel.

You have no need to put a gloss base down to use metal paints this Matt grey primer is just right to actually do arty etc and the slightly blue tinge of stainless steel gives a realistic look of a polished steel breech.

Using a black base on silver based metal paints actually darkens the colour as black - even gloss will absorb light to a certain degree. Grey and white will either lighten or keep the paint shade.

After a disastrous episode with Alclad I moved onto both AK Xtreme Metal and Vallejo Metal Colour and had amazing results even directly onto the plastic and although there are colour crossovers there is a shade variance between the colours and both sit nicely next to each other on a model and my paint rack.

The Scout is coming out very nice and detailed Stick.

Are you still planning to add the "mud" camo, seems almost a shame at this  stage?

Yes I am... today after work. Keeping my fingers crossed on this that it works out right. It will make or break this project.

Stik, you are doing great, you have already met the challenge requirements as James described them. You did it in good time considering the holidays and work.

I keep falling asleep on the floor after work and am easily distracted when awake, so no joy for me On this GB. Embarrassed

I did assemble the Stuart’s 0.30 cal gun, tripod and pintle mount.  They had some teeny parts which tested the limits of my failing eyesight and dexterity.  Pics to follow.

I was farting around with another GB project, so finish sanding of the Stuart will have to wait till tomorrow.  However, I resolve to finish this kit before the month is out.

Sarge, thanks for the complents! But there is just a bit more that I want to do on the 222 itself. How’s your Jeep coming along?

RG, your M3 is a little beauty of a kit! 12 days or not, thanks for sharing your work on it here!

Snap, thanks for putting out this challenge! Im looking forward to next year‘s already...

Yesterday I worked on hand painting details like seats, lights and engine parts. Finally, I broke off the antenna. It was sure to happen sooner or later because the only thing holding the antenna to the base was a very small bit of plastic. Mechanically the antenna could not survive a lot of handling.

I tried to find a drill bit small enough to create a hold in the antenna base for .025" piano wire, but the smallest I could find in local stock is 1/32" (.03125). While the hole could be partially filled the antenna base is resin plastic and only 1/16" (.0625) diameter, there is just not enough plastic to work with for a .03125 hole. I have tried heating a large needle and melting into the plastic and that seems to work, but its risky.

Later this morning I will pick up some Tamiya XF-85 Rubber Black paint from the hobby store to finish the wheels. I have decided to leave off the decals for now because of time and I'm not sure what I need for the diorama.

The finished paint color always looks to green to me on the computer screen, so I added this photograph of a real Jeep to compare colors.

Snapdragon,

Yeah, it might be that.  I’m supposed to see the doc for a bunch of “mileage-related” health issues.  I was essentially maintenance free for 40 years, then stuff started happening.  Since I passed 50, things have started to become more than a nuisance.  That “fall asleep on the floor” thing has seriously cut my evening modeling time down the past few months.  Yeah and it really bugs me!

I will continue the M3 as my front line build until it is done.

Very nearly there with 1 day to go.

All that remains is a couple of extra parts, some base coat touch ups and if time I may put on some camo on the shields and barrel.

This kit does have some fit issues, but there again, it might be me! Still it is a nice build and will look a bit more aggressive with some disruptive green and brown on!

just 1 day left guys.

I thought that I would open this up to the community on here just to see what would happen and give those who joined in a little taster of what I go through annually!

Really it doesn't matter if you complete or not as it is only a bit of Crimble funbut as a 12 day challenge it all depends on what you decide to build and the amount of time you get to sit at your bench and the old model builders saying.... "painting always takes longer than you thought it would do!"

I do think that Sarges' badge should be adoped for this trial run and each member should resize the badge to suit. I'll do that as soon as I figure out how to put it on my signature thingy!

After doing some thinking I propose that the 12 day Christmas build challenge start on the 26th December and go while the 6th Jamuary with "Warning Orders" posted in the Group Buid section in November along with the rules etc. which gives those wanting to join in 2 months to prepare and declare themselves and their build.

I will be limiting the build to 1/35 armour/softskins/Arty etc and 1/32 aircraft.

I won't be joining then. I very rarely build 1/35 armor, in fact I'd go so far as to say I probably never will again, and 1/32 aircraft are too large for my area. The few I do get are very complex and can't be completed in 12 days.

I do have a 1/35 Dragon 88, but would want to go slow and do it right.

Steve

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

Been following but not commenting-sorry

Svenne-StuG coming along nicely-I need to add one to my build list.

Sarge-love the Jeep-great job-can't wait to see the finished build

Real G-M3 is looking good-regarding the 'sleep' issue, BP could be a root cause-in my case, sleep apnea was the issue-no matter, a doctors' visit may be/is in order.

Snap-love the 88-making a great looking kit.

Stik-love the Scout-and you're doing a great job-very nice build

Models32466-paints are Tamiya acrylic-xf-60 dark yellow, xf-64 red brown & xf-61 dark green.  Used Tamiya Lacquer Thinner, 50/50 mix-about 20 psi using a Badger Patriot-probably could have dialed down the psi a bit-followed by a coat of Future prior to decals-will be doing some oil washes tomorrow...I hope....

Right,

This "inofficial" GB has been a fun experience :)

As for me I finaly managed to get the main constuction elements in place.

Had to rip off the fenders twice before the parts would klick in place.

It could well be that my initial misstake was entirely on me but it costed me a little bit to much time.

Should have listened to James comment about expecting all kind off issues.

Anyway - I have about 180minutes bench time today and I will use those for the initial paint jobs.

Which means that I won't get the tracks ready and I surrendor my weapons :)

Before I enter this years competition I will remind myself and put on Detroit Rock City

Congratulations to your builds guys, looks to me as if at least 3 builds will be completed with Stick, Snap and Sarge - excellent results!

@ Harold, did you check my comment about the XF-51? Not suggesting that it could replace OD but it could add a tonal variation.

Best regards and best off luck with your builds in 2019 - 359 days to go :)

For those who have joined in it looks like, finish or not you have had a lot of fun, which is one of the aims of this challenge.

For those doing it and those watching it should have been a good learning experience of time management, preparation and subject choice

most jumped in with no preparation at all and just pulled something out of the stash and started, and I did rather drop it on everyone Last minute.

so, in the spirit of Christmas and New year, I award Sarge's badge to all builders complete builds or not as this trial run you all stepped up to the plate and did some inspiring work on some quite difficult kits.

after reading some comments and also a couple of PM's I think the base rules should be:

12 days from 26th December to 6 January. - Christmas Day should be spent with the family having a beer, good food and fun rather than sitting at your bench with a look of bemusement and fear that you have chosen the wrong thing for 12 days!

Scale: Let's open it up and make a real challenge. Anything apart from 1/72 and 1/144. Sorry for those guys. 1/48, 1/35, 1/32, 1/24 aircraft, armour, cars, bikes etc.

Sometimes you need to step out of your comfort zone and choose something different to your normal stuff To have a challenge and fun, and this is what this is all about and you'll get 2 months of prep time to get everything together ready for the build.

for the armour guys, you should consider Friul tracks for this challenge rather than kit ones etc as they are easier to actually deal with and put together and I have actually put together two runs and painted them in an evening.

as most of the builders who have joined in will testify, it is all about the planning and making most of the time you get as family will make demands and they should come first. Both myself and FSM don't want to be named as co-respondents in divorce proceedings, so talk to SWMBO and maybe you might get her involved.... Nothing in the rules about that at all!

If anyone would like to add to this, them please message me

It seems inappropriate James for the organizer of the Christmas Challenge to give himself the Sargeant's Award, so as an active participant in the challenge and current member of FSM Armor forum in good standing, I award you for completing the challenge on time and submitting an interesting model that turned out great!

I will submitt my final pictures later today.

James-nice finish on your 88-and thank you for creating and hosting this GB-it's been a good one-looking forward to next year's GB.

Here are my two entries-the T-34/76 (747r) was a Weekend Maddness GB entry done at the same time-the extra time in this GB allowed me to do some touchup and washes.

The 251/1 Hanomag was done for this GB solely-the Tamiya kit was a good build-a lot of opportunity for detailing & weathering....and it's dirt cheap (@ HobbyLobby w/40% coupon)

Again, thank you James for hosting a great GB!

Cheers

Finished Willys MB Jeep with World War II BC1306 radio set and wheels with snow chains. This Jeep will be used later in my Ardennes 1944 'Road to St. Vith' diorama.

I had to rebuild the antenna base (mast) with 2mm copper tubing and 3/64" (1.1906 mm) brass rod. I used soft copper wire around the brass rod to look like a spring, see picture of actual antenna base below. The antenna itself is made from .025 music wire and detachable from the base.

If I had more time I would purchase the antenna base (mast) below from Adlers Nest. It is as realistic as you can get in 1/35 scale.

Snapdragonxxx,

Thanks for hosting the informal GB!

Even though I didn't finish, your great GB idea inspired me to start a kit and want to finish it!  I'll post pics when I cross the finish line - hopefully in less than 20 days and not in 20 years!

As a last minute informal and fun group build, I feel that this trial has been a success and I would like to thank those who jumped in at the last minute with both feet and no parachute for stepping up to the plate and the challenge and at risk of divorce, sleeping with the dog/cat/hamster/goldfish, silent dinners and constant nagging, survived and completed the 12 day challenge and actually had fun along the way!

I do think that everyone who joined in learned something along the 12 day journey as did those watching. It is the posting of the build and the comments that really provide the impetus in this challenge, not only from the builders but those following too.

For the next 12 day challenge I propose 3 badges

12 Day Challenge Badge 2019/2020

Same badge with FAILED across it in military stencil font (after all... This is a bit of Christmas/New Year fun) for those who join in and fail the deadline!

Challenge Badge with SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed) honours!

I would like to  propose Harold (Sergeant) as official badge designer for the challenge build.

After all, if we can't laugh at ourselves, our hobby and what we get up to then what is the point. After all, this GB is a time limited bit of fun where mostly anything goes and the badges should reflect this.

Display your badge with pride, guys!
