Scratchbuild WIP- SADF Buffel Updated 6/17
Posted by IanIsBored2000 on Thursday, October 25, 2007 4:21 PM

I recently became interested in SADF (South African Defense Force), specifically their V hulled APC's, which bear nearly no similarity to any other AFV's ever created.  So, I've decided to try my first scratchbuild project--a 1/35 Buffel APC.  So far I've gotten the rear troop area put together, and now I'm starting to add seats and other details.  Haven't decided If I'm going to have the hinged side doors up or down yet, or maybe one each.  The seats are being made of 2 part epoxy putty, and look better in real life.

Here's what the Buffel looks like:

This is what's inside that big V hulled rear "box"

Here's what I've got so far:

And a couple shots next to a 1/35 Land Rover for scale:

Well a Buffel is a new one on me and you look like your off to a flyer on it. I just couldnt contemplate a scratchbuilt model. I have so many kits in my stash. Are you planning to use some bitz from other kits? Or are you scratching the lot?

Where the heck did you get the plans for it? I mean, a photo's a photo, but you're gonna need a lot more than that for a scratchbuild!? References????

Luftwoller:  I was hoping to use the Chassis from a Unimog, but can't find one for a decent price, so I'm going to try scratchbuilding that too, with help from some measuerments and instruction photocopies from SprueOne.  The only "real" kit part will be the wheels, which SteelRudi is helping me out with from a guy in Africa who makes a full resin Buffel, that's out of my budget.

Doog:  Unfortunately, you're completely right.  All I have to work off is a walkaround photo shoot.  I used the measurements for the real thing I found on a website (length height nd width) and scaled them down to 1/35, as well as scaling dowsn some of the walkaround pictures, so that they are in 1/35 scale, and use them to get the shapes right.  SprueOne took some pictures of the chassis with rulers alongside it to get the size of the chassis just right.  Even then it's going to get tough.  Since' it's my first attempt scratchbuilding anything more than an antenna, I'm not striving for perfection though.  If it looks like a buffel when it's done, it's good enough for me.

WOW, man; that's what I call "ambitious"! Good luck--sounds like you'll need it--and I admire your pluck for going after a project like this!

Thanks Doog.....one thing I've noticed is how much you appreciate a real kit after working on something like this.  Same way building an old, simple, perfect fitting Tamiya kit feels after building a newer complicated kit with, tons of complicated PE, tiny details and the likes.  Tamiya kits feel like they put themselves together themselves after cutting out my own pieces for an hour or two.

No offense to the SADF, but when I first saw the picture it looked like a cross between a small garbage truck and a piece of farm-machinery. This is definitely not a Tiger or Sherman build, so I look forward to watching yours skills tackle this one.

Hehe, does sort of look like a dump truck on estrogen steroids.  I get sick of Tigers and Shermans, and like to branch off.  Kinda like everything I do, can't stand mainstream music.  But I DID just order tickets to.......SILVERSTEIN!  Good stuff.

It is looking good my friend.  Tires should be here in a few weeks.  I have been off to see the wizard lately.  (Dont ask.)  It has been really hectic here.  Keep up on the build, and I will scan some pic's I have of the chassis in 1/35 scale.  It should not be too hard to do.  Will see what other pic's I can get sent concerning axles and such.  Looks great!  Will scan the decal sheet, from my buffel kit too.  By the way, they id have flat beds, and the civilian market bought surplus buffels and there are some dump, and garbage trucks running around South Africa as we speak.

For anyone requiring furhter info on SADF?SANDF equipment, let me know.  I can point you in the right direction.

Thanks! It's actually been really fun.  The planning and cutting and pieceing together the main parts is somewhat frustrating, but putting all the little detail bits on is fun.  Not really looking forward to the chassis though.  And the engine is pretty busy, that will take a while.

Ian

I'm glad to see some more scratch building. Your doing a great job...don't get frustrated...scratch means slow and careful.

As far as Doog's comments on plans, you can with enough pictures and some reference to size, scale many details from photos or most of what you see...but some base knowledge helps.

Ian, it would appear you have both and are moving nicely. No offense to my friends but is nice to see some other things besides Tigers and Shemans. Especially rare or different vehicles.

The image “http://www.planetsmilies.com/smilies/happy/happy0162.gif” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors. You have your work cut out for you here, but then again you're surely demonstrating that it is within your ability. This should really be interesting to see when complete. It would be good to see this as an article in a future Finescale article. Fine looking work here.
