looking for comments on panther g aftermarket part
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, October 16, 2003 2:57 PM
hi guys , i'm starting to get stuff for my panther g, i decided to try some of the aftermarket stuff on this one. so far i'm looking at the aber 35024 pe set , the jordi rubio 62 panther barrel , and the fruilmodel atl08 metal track set , anyone have bad experiences with any of these products? other options are the eduard 35362 pe set and 34001 barrel

for that track set i think i read somewhere about a tool that makes it easier to assemble and drill them but i can't find it anymore, anyone have any information about that as well?

The aber and eduard p/e sets are very good, you won't be disappointed by either of them. However, I recommend getting the eduard barrel instead of the rubio barrel. IMO, the eduard barrel fits and looks better than the rubio barrel. I haven't heard of a tool that will help build metal link to link tracks, but there are a couple of bending tools that will help when using p/e sets. They are the hold and fold and the etchmate.

Sounds cool Pantherlehr, which one do you have? I have Tamiya's early G with p/e zimmerit. Are you going to do your own zim? If not (don't hit me Moses) then you might want to look at some aftermarket zimmerit. Mine is Eduard. I think Cavalier makes some, but I'm not quite sure. Good luck on a cool project. Cool [8D]

I am also starting to get parts for mine (Tamiya) and was wondering about the same things. Cool [8D] Does any one know where to get a brass MG? There was a company (collector's Brass?) but I don't know if they are still around.

Hey guys,

You should give thought to an engine. Verlinden makes an engine for that panther. You can look down into those PE grilles and see something. I don't know, maybe I have done too many autos. It seems funny to build something without an engine.( I know not alot of armor has them)

If you do resin zimmerit - there's Cavalier, (like tigerman said) Atek, CMK makes some, and I think even Mirage is making some now.

You can get PE zimmerit as well.

Good luck with the build

A group build would be a motivater. I forgot to mention I got a grille set from Tamiya. Have to look into a barrel and tracks. If we do a group build, could it wait until after the holidays? So much going on right now. Any others interested?

Can you guys get Part PE?

Part is a Polish company that produces some really fine etch sets. I have the Panther A/D skirts, grills and fenders (the front bit missing in the DML kits) and they are great. Part are not as "over the top" as Aber, and comparing the Eduard engine grills to their version, you gotta go Part.

Part produces separate sets, so if you just want one set - say the front fenders- you don't have to spend more bikkies on stuff you don't want. Part also works out cheaper over here, which is always a bonus.

Never heard of them Peter, but thanks for passing along the info. Maybe some sharp eye out there knows where some might be found.

From what I've been told, Part has been around for a little while, doing 1/35th and 1/72nd scale armour (and those things with wingsTongue [:P]).

Quick search of the net produced a UK distributer as PDI Model Supplies

Also found this site:
http://www.airconnection.on.ca/airconnection_part_ALL.htm
It lists only 23 of the 1/35th scale sets available (The C7P alone has 6 sets available that I know of) but will give you an idea.

This link is for those winged things, but it has a picture of what the Part PE looks like. It is a sheet to build a vickers machine gun for a WW1 bbbb.... bbbii... biplane (phew, got it out)

PantherLehr, IMO you should do your own zimmerit. Unless, you already have done some in the past and hated it,
it's a great experience and gives you a true appreciation for detail. I did my own zimm for the first time on my 1/16 Tiger
and I wasn't sorry. I myself would love to do a Panther next, and I know I'd just have to zimm it! (Watch out Moses!!)

Sorry PantherLehr, it's just that January works best for me. If you want to start a group build before that go ahead. I've never done one before. Sounds neat. Might get me to finish one.

Claymore, how much does that little set run for? Tongue [:P]Dead [xx(] I've heard from another thread that Aber sets are kinda difficult to assemble.

I'm new with p/e parts, do you have to prep them at all before painting? Clean them with anything?

If you guys want to roll on the Panther group build, go for it. Seems like there are a few eager beavers. I'd still prefer to wait, but I can understand if you want to get cracking. Who knows maybe I'll squeeze some time in. I still need to order some parts for mine though.

Eric,

That small Aber package is about $60, i-net price. It's for the DML A and D panthers. It's one of the things I asked for for my b-day...I hope, I hope, I hope!!!

I have a part pe set for the shurtzen on a 1/72 panzer IV. Seems to be well made. As with all the pe sets I've gotten, the instructions leave a lot to be desired. It was all there, just hard to decode their drawings. I did a search on Parts Accessories items for a Panther at greatmodels.com. There are several sets of zimmerit listed, but they are all 1/72. They have a lot of stuff for SdKfz 251's in 1/35.

QUOTE: I'm new with p/e parts, do you have to prep them at all before painting? Clean them with anything?

Eric,

I usually clean the entire fret with lacquer thinner before I start cutting off parts. This insures that any oils, etc. are removed. I bought a small pair of scissors for the express purpose of cutting parts off the frets. They do a much cleaner job than using a knife, but sometimes the parts are postioned so that it's difficult to impossible to use the scissors, so it's back to a #11 blade. Then I use the scissors to trim as much of the remaining attachment tag off the part as I can. Usually I still have a little rough spot on the part. I've used a small needle file to hone them down, but have found that a course sanding stick works much better. The file has a tendency to catch the part in it's teeth and either launch or bend it. (I don't follow this as well as I should, but you shouldn't use the same file or sanding stick for anything plastic. Some metal will get imbedded in the file/stick and it could scratch your plastic.) It's probably a good idea to lightly clean the part with a q-tip with lacquer thinner on it before painting the part, but you need to be real careful because the lacquer thinner will disolve plastic and a heartbeat. (I usually don't do this step for that reason.) The people who know these things also say that if you use any pe parts, you need to prime everything before painting.

Hope this helps. A Panther build would be fun to be a part of, or just watch. (I have a DML D, early A, and the old Tamiya A. I'd like to get an F or one of the Tamiya G's).

Have fun.

Thanks Bill for the p/e update, I figured thinner or alcohol to clean it with. I can't believe how much that Aber kit is running. [:0] I could get two panthers for that price. I really have my eye on Dragon's Panther A late model. Tongue [:P] It's on my christmas list along with alot of aluminum barrels, schurzen, etc.

Thanks Jon for your post eons ago with the pictures of Dragons Panther A, made my mind up.

A group build sounds intriging, how exactly does it work. I admit that I haven't followed them. Disapprove [V]

Eric, if you haven't done any pe before, which sounds to be the case, I'd definately stick with Eduard for the first few. They are complicated enough. Make sure you have a nice, small, well fitting tweezers, a good flat nosed pliers (to bend the pe against) and some brass rod (to apply ca glue to the part). I've seen, somewhere, to wrap the end of a toothpick with masking tape (facing outward) and use that to position small parts. Let the glue set up, then remove the toothpick from the part. I haven't had much luck with this method, yet. If you can afford it, the pe bender tools work pretty well, but you have to be really into it to justify (in my mind) the cost. I bought a small (2 inch) hold 'n fold and really like it. I can hold the tool up close to my totally shot eyes rather than having to leave the tool on the table. But I really need a bigger one for longer parts. But even then, the small one cost $25 and the bigger ones are around $65. I'd rather spend that kind of money on models. Which is why I don't have a punch set either! I'll have to be getting one of those someday when I start working on my (shudder) winged things!! (I've got some nice Accurate Miniatures kits that are just screaming for me to work on them!! lol)

In a group build, everyone just kind of does his (or her) own thing and writes up a bit about what they've done for the past while, any problems or successes they've had, etc. It's really informal, needless to say. If you can post pictures of your progress, it makes it a lot more fun for everyone. I can't get my wife's stupid camera to download any pictures, so I haven't been able to post any yet. I've even had the IT guys here at work looking at it, and nobody can make it workSad [:(]Sad [:(]Angry [:(!]

Hope this helps.

Thanks again Bill. Your right I only some grilles for my Panzer III recently and sadly that is it so far. My Panther has the Eduard zimmerit in it. Sorry to disappoint Moses and a few of the purists out there. I do intend to try it someday when time isn't a factor. Right now I just want to finish something. Angry [:(!]

You have airplanes? Evil [}:)] Lol. No need to whisper, I have one in the box pushing 2 years old. Every time I start on another project, I fade back to the dark side. Can't finish anything else.

A group build sounds fun, but I need to order parts. I'm sorta waiting to hear back from some other members to see when they would like to start. Anybody?
