I have not tried it but I have also heard several people recommend brake fluid.

Regular Clorox bleach takes it off in about 10 minutes too.

I use Westley Bleach White like you would use on your white wall tires. Takes the chrome plating right off in about 10-15 minutes and doesnt leave any sticky residue My 2 cents [2c]

Oven cleaner will also remove the chrome, down to the bare plastic.

The active ingredient is lye, which is caustic to skin and other tissue, so it's a good idea to use it in a well-ventilated area, or outside, weather permitting, and to use gloves, like household cleaning gloves, to handle the parts while they're covered.

I use an old glass baking dish, place the items to be cleaned in the dish, and spray on the oven cleaner until the parts are covered.  Wait a couple of minutes, and then take an old toothbrush and scrub away the foam and gunk.  Rinse the parts with water, and repeat as necessary.  It doesn't take too long for it to remove the thin layer of chrome plating.

Hope that helps!

Are the parts metal or plastic?  Don't know what to tell you if they're metal.  If they're plastic, you can dunk them in bleach and that usually removes the chrome, but leaves the clear lacquer undercoat.  If you want to get down to bare plastic, go to your local walmart or auto parts place and get you some Super Clean.  Dunk it in the purple lake for a while and you should be good to go.  Rinse well, let dry and then primer.  Welcome to the Forums.  What are you building?
