awesome model, really impressed with all of the extra detail - easy to go nuts on this (1/24 is a great scale to work in).  All we need now is a 1/24 Max to go with it!

I have the kit sitting on my shelf as well, and wanted to do a pristine car to go with my other police cars - I recall an after market kit, does anyone know the web address?  I read that it may be a less than honest guy, so if anyone knows another site or wants to sell theirs, let me know!

it certainly does lend itself to more detail. If you want to make the car pre-road warrior (aka Mad Max) it's pretty straightforward to scratchbuild the missing pieces. you need the lower front air dam, a rear seat and trunk w/spoiler.

Congradulations Buddy!

I'm not the least bit suprised---well deserved!

I really like that  base with the asphalt road through nowhere--VERY Mad Max!!

Thanks, good to hear from you again.

It was largely due to your positive input that I made that base for it, both for presentation reasons as well as the base material I ended up using...it's made of that wood filler stuff that you suggested, great stuff to work with and the base is as light as a feather.  The original base was too cluttered and detracted from the model as you correctly pointed out, as well as being too warped by the celluclay I used. It wasn't useable. I'll save the trees I made for another project though since I think they turned out pretty well. The rest is garbage.

So it's fair to say I couldn't have done it without you, or at the very least it wouldn't have turned out as well. Toast

Well it seems like forever since I first started this kit. I guess the positive and encouraging comments I've read here and elsewhere must have been on the right track as it won another Silver, this time at SuperCon today.

Thanks again to those who offered their kind words!

Damn celluclay warped the crap out of the base (it's still drying and warping).

The only AM kit I know of made to convert the kit into the pre-Road Warrior Interceptor was made by the guy you're referring to, and he had a poor track record for actually shipping the product from what I heard. AFAIK, that kit isn't available anymore.

Update: Road Warrior Interceptor Dio
Posted by batai37 on Thursday, June 17, 2010 11:51 PM

Finished the dio, going to enter it a local contest tomorrow. Besides some issues with the celluclay base, I think it turned out O.K., if unspectacular. It would have been cool to do something larger "on the road" with wreckage and stuff, but I think it would have turned out too big. Anyway, hope you like, it's my first attempt at a dio (and scratchbuilt trees).

Thanks again for the critiques and kind words!

Working on the base for the dio...oval pine bought at Michaels. I'm toying with different ideas for the dio scenery, and right now leaning towards placing it on asphalt pavement with the desert surroundings more or less based on that seen in the 1st chase scene at the beginning of the movie. I'd love to hear any suggestions anyone might have though.

Not sure how I missed this thread before, but WOW!  Love your work on that car.  Even the dirt is the right shade.  Very, very nice work.

Pics of the completed job will follow!

Looks great, nice weathering effects. You've pretty much covered the entire list. some of the other details you might have considered is to remove the inner door cards (both are missing on the movie car), which also has mounted a bullet belt with a tin can in it and a big knife. he also has a plate stuck between the roof and the roll bar (visible when the dog jumps out of the car onto the gyro captain).

Here is a list of items and also some pics of a replica, which pretty much looks like your model as far as items go. he describes "1 x Metal bar tool similar (home renovation tool) is known in AU as a "Jimmy bar"

http://www.lastinterceptor.com/lastinterceptor/todaybot7.html

it's worth looking at the pic of his inner door to see the style of the framework.

This is looking really good. You've captured the red dirt and dust really well and all the survival gear stashed in the last of the V8s. I've been out to Broken Hill a couple of times and the dirt is very red around there, and it also has a distinct sparkle to it...very mineral rich. Can't wait to see what you do the exterior of this one. I hope you are going to model it after the front fairing has dropped off.

I re-watched the movie several times after beginning this kit (unfortunately...some minor inaccuracies are present that I might have corrected otherwise, but oh well), and I was thinking the same thing about the other vehicles...personally I don't know if it's within my skills to scratchbuild or kitbash something like that though. Would be an interesting challenge though.

I imagine with some creative Photoshop work one could superimpose whatever they want on a photo of the Australian countryside. Print it and glue it to some foam board that would be attached to the dio base I suppose. I don't have much dio experience.

As an interesting aside, if you didn't know there are people out there who make 1:1 running, street-legal accurate replicas of both  the original Interceptor and Road Warrior versions. I'd love to have one myself, heh.

Thanks!

I just looked on Ebay, and these are getting expensive. I got mine for $50 plus shipping.

There used to be a garage kit maker that made a resin conversion kit to build it as the original Interceptor from the 1st movie, but apparently that maker was less-than-scrupulous and there were complaints about delivery. I'm not aware of anyone who makes one now, but that would be a cool companion to the Road Warrior version.

Looking real good so far, can't wait to see it done.I have always wanted to build this kit but its a little steep for me price wise. I made one when I was younger out of a Mach 1 Mustang .Came oiut all right for a 15 yr old or so.

Road Warrior Interceptor
Posted by batai37 on Friday, February 26, 2010 10:56 PM

Greets all,

This is my first attempt at a car kit, and also my first post of pics of a project I'm working on. This is the Aoshima Road Warrior Interceptor, or at least the interior since the body isn't finished yet. I drew inspiration for some of the details such as the binoculars, tool box, and box of Dinki Di dog food from a guy called SuperDave who did a superb job of detailing his version of this kit, so thanks go out to him for filling in some gaps on what the inside of the car might look like...the movie really doesn't provide a lot that's viewable.

Those items, as well as the mesh net behind the driver's seat and the shackles that lift the rear end (thanks to SuperDave for the ideas for these details too) were all scratch built from card stock (shackles), sprue (roll bar), wooden dowels (the hanging pail and the binoculars), window screen (the mesh), gauze bandage (the netting on the floor) and carved balsa wood (the toolbox and other various boxes). The bed roll was made from a piece of old t-shirt airbrushed in olive drab and tied up with a piece of thread. MadMaxModels.com provided the images of the Dinki Di logo on the box of dogfood which I resized and printed out on brown construction paper.

Weathering was done with several materials - Doc O'Brien's Weathering Powders, Tamiya's weathering system, and the mud was made from sheetrock joint compound mixed with weathering powder and water and stippled on the wheels and wheelwells with a drybrush. The extra gas tanks in the rear were "rusted" with Rustall (good stuff).

I'd like to put this in a diorama, with a backdrop of a photo of the Mundi Mundi Plains, where the movie was filmed...still cogitating on that. When I researched this, I discovered there's a lot of iron-rich red dirt in this region (also obvious in the movie), hence the mud and much of the weathering is a reddish-brown color.
