Starting ICM's Model T
Posted by Don Stauffer on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 9:13 AM

I have started my ICM 1911 T (touring car version). It is a beautiful kit, worth the money as far as I am concerned.  The detail is great, very little flash and few sink marks. Fit is generally good except for a few areas.  The body has a lot of pieces!  The two body sides are held together by three bulkheads and the rear apron.  There are holes in body for pegs on end of bulkheads, and the pegs are longer than the holes are deep.  Since the body sides are thin, drilling the holes deeper is dangerous. I used a needle file to shorten the pegs about 15 or 20 mil.

The brass plating is not as bad as I had feared from early reviews, but the radiator shell does have a prominent seam, and some of the plated parts are in two halves that leave a seam when glued together. I will be Alclading (with brass alclad) the radiator shell, the headlights and the Prestolight generator.

Nothing worth pictures yet, but will post some when I get that far along.

Got a picture of the engine this morning.  The exhaust manifold and pipe are just sitting in place.  The manifold is part of the whole (2-piece) exhaust system, which is installed later.

Nice. Are you adding wiring?

Yeah, I will when engine is installed- plug wires come from firewall.  Also will add throttle linkage and choke rod.

While I am still very happy about the kit, and do believe the fit in general is very good, I have found one area where fit is bad, so this is a warning.  The seats (the upholstered area) have really bad fit.  First problem is that there are no pins or locating aids.  Even then, the fit is bad gluing the ends to the seat/seat back piece.  You will need filler, and it is difficult to sand the filler due to the texture/tufting on the seat surface.  Do this gluing carefully, use slow drying glue, and test fit the assemblies into the body before the glue completely sets.

Warning.  The steering wheel in this kit is made up of two parts- the rim and the spoke assembly.  The spoke piece has very thin spokes, and in spite of noticing this and taking extreme care in trying to remove piece from sprue, I broke off a spoke :-(

Use super-extreme caution removing this piece!

I'm looking forward to that throttle linkage and choke rod. I just got through finishing up with a dual quad linkage set up and that was "fun". lol. Looking good so far Don!
