Being too impatient to wait for advice, I blew on the Alclad chrome.

It looks a whole lot better in person, I'm almost hesitant to post this. It looks like the kit chome, just less reflective/shiny. Not by a lot, by a little bit.

Alclad said two light coats. Wish I'd have stopped after one, they looked perfect.

You can see the little bumps on the middle portion of the rims. I don't know where they came from, they were visibile after the gloss black base coat. Should have re-done them but I didn't.

This is no big deal to those of you who re-do chrome regulary, but it's my first time and something I've wanted to try for decades.

Anybody knows how long I should wait to handle the rims? They 'feel' dry already.

Remember on the Alclad. Get a KILLER gloss black undercoat before shooting a thin coat of that Alclad at lower pressure. I may have some info for you actually from a guy who really knows his stuff with Alclad if your interested.

BTW....Your progress is looking pretty dang good there Greg.

The best I do is to get a new can of gloss paint in the color I want. Embarrassed

As I just mentioned, Rob, I think I have ventured into a whole new world with these automotive glosses. I've not worried about bumps and grains and other imperfections figuring with airplanes, the matte coats and weathering will hide them anyway.

What have I gotten myself into? Indifferent

I actually used my Alclad black primer (for the first time...been on my shelf forever). It is very shiny, very black, and to my dismay has a few bumps. I think I've entered a whole new world of painting with this car thing.

By all means, I'm all ears regarding spraying the Alclad. Plan is to give it a try today. I've spray a quite a bit of Alclad, but not Chrome and nothing over thier own gloss back undercoat.

very daring move  my friend.I did this on a very old amt 50 ford that the chrome was just awful. But it’s worth the time. I cant wait to see this . YesYes

Honestly, Nick, I looked at those kit-chromed rims for a couple days before I got the gumption to strip them. They looked very good. But to my eye, still just too shiny. In hindsight, maybe I should have practiced one something less conspicious. We'll see, now ..........

Nick, Joe, Timmy, plan is basic black because my best friend used to have one back in the day. That was my inspiration to build this.

I was just last night thinking this thing is really going to be black everything. I guess that's the way black vehicles are.

Timmy, the paint job you're thinking of sounds very cool, and way beyond my abilities. :)

Today's plan is strip the wheels and paint them Alclad Chrome. That'll be a new adventure for me. I'd be tempted to try Joe's Malotow Chrome trick, but I don' have any and I haven't the patience to wait 48 for anything to dry anymore.

I'll pile on the "bandwagon" here.

Just dont do a "Tye- Dye", Hippy nightmare Day-glo .....

( I have already lived through that once ..... )

Beside's , ... it's hard to find the door handle .... when it's covered by a "Magic Unicorn" eating Jelly bean's.

Dont worry about the thumbprint, paint it Rust , and call it "Battle Damage"

Steve, thanks for taking the time to comment, I appreciate it. I had to look up "VDub", I learned something!!!

Wow, I thought that was very common knowledge. FYI "BDub" is slang for Buffalo Wild Wings, which I assume is a play on the VDub slang.

Very nice "unders" you have gotten there. Obviously you have not let you talent go completely out the window “even though” it’s a VDub

Thanks, Lee! Glad you got a kick out of my title. It seems odd even to me. Lots of years.

Nick, thanks for stopping in. I've had a lapse in progress. Need to clear coat some stuff, then onward......

The engine and transmission look great Greg. Yes

Hey, thanks Steve.

You know, your comment got me thinking about the smelly enamel wash I did on that tranny/motor combo which got me thinking I hope you are planning to get yourself an excellent respirator.

OK, one more. Greg, you can't do any original stupid things to a VW bug. Every one I ever bought had just been overhauled. This means they took it apart and put it back together upside down. Someone putting the heads back on without putting the washers back on with the head nuts comes to mind. Just sayin'. lol!
