I also have a few nostalgia kits lying in the stash to be cherished forever in an unopened state.  But nowadays I’d rather build them and enjoy them one more time, or give them away if a more modern equivalent shows up.  I think the incredible selection of modern kits has spoiled us, as well as taken the thunder out of kit collecting.

And the funny thing is, the past isn’t what it used to be!  I’m building a Tamiya 8-ton halftrack and having one heck of a time dealing with issues related to the kit’s vintage.  When I built my first one in 1977, I thought it breezed together!  The old Revell USS Pittsburgh, which was the first kit I built, is being reissued by Atlantis Models, but even when I was 5 years old, I remember the moldings were not all that great.

As a kid in the early 1970s, I admired those Revell dragster kits, but I knew I’d never be able to get them to look like the ones the car guys built.  The big 1/16 ones were so impressive!

I look foward to your 3 second heat down memory lane!

I know how you feel, I have a Monogram Packard Bobtail Speedster in the box, first releasd in 1975, my first car model. Just sits there in the stash. Not a super crazy high price on eBay, but you know....memories

Steve

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

It is sooo much fun to acquire a highly desired kit with lots of memories involved, or one wanted for a long time.

I completely understand your reluctance to open it. Have a few of those on my shelf too, my friend.

Congrats on your new prize. Yes

Armornut,

I say build it.  Modern tools and materials can handle any shortcomings in the kit.  You can probably source things like spoked front wheels and aftermarket decals if the originals have gone bad.  (But check around first and verify before tearing into the kit!)  Also, you are further along in experience compared to the 1980s.

If you know a pretty girl, why not ask her to dance?  Would be a shame not to.

I can relate as I have one in the stash that I'll never build intentionally. MPC 1.48 EA -6B Prowler kit. Long story, I won't hijack the thread, but it's cool to just have it. Brings back memories.

You have a very good friend there armornut-would love to have any of the Revell dragster kits in my stash but eBay prices are outside my comfort zone.

Hope you decide to build it and post the build-I'm sure you'll do a great job.

Bob

As 2019 came to a close I noticed that my contributions to this fine forum had wained. Work, life, and the occasional misinterpreted reply required me to go quiet for a time....a trend I may continue into 2020. That being said...

To most this sounds like bragging, not my intent. In 1987 when this kit was produced I was a fledgling, just enlisted in the Navy, trying to put a bad life behind me. Revell popped a 1/16 scale rear engine Don Garlets dragster. Being a fan of all things fast I yerned for this kit, but never w a able to aquire one.

Through a friend of a friend I now have my kit. To be honest I'm afraid to open it, it is still in original shrink wrap. Probably one of the 3 coolest things that have happened to me thru modelling.

Just wanted to share my joy.
