NP drum kit in 1/12 scale WIP Update 8.28
Posted by SteveM on Thursday, August 9, 2007 10:21 PM

Here's what I've been working on lately...

A reference shot-

Haven't been a Rush fan in many years, but I grew up dreaming about this kit.

Comments most welcome

Now that's some scratchbuilding! Looking good from the reference photo. What are you planning to use to get the chrome finish on the stands?

Thanks, mf- if you look closely, you'll see that His Highness, Mr. Peart, had all his hardware (stands, rims, lugs, brackets) brass plated. So brass it is...but I'm so far away from painting that I've got time to think out how I'm gonna get it that shiney. Taking suggestions.

That, my Texan friend, is incredible!  How did you do that metal ribbing on the outside of the drums?  And what's the plan for the symbols on the drums?  There used to be a post with a generous guy offering to make custom decals for anyone who needed them, mgiht be youre best bet.

Thanks, ya'llBig Smile [:D] Cymbals- that is going to be where I break new ground for myself. This is also where I want to make sure my fire insurance policy is up to date... I think it's gonna have to be vacuforming for cymbals. Have to research the how-tos.

Ian, the drum hoops are styrene channel strips  [  with the top rim carefully sliced off (if that's what yer asking about).

very impressive project. And unique subject too.
What about the opaque skins? paper? thin styrene sheet?

I was curious about the skins as well.  Also--when I asked about how you are going to do the symbols, it was not in fact a mis-spelling of cymbals, I was refering to the star inside of a circle symbols on the skins of the drums.  Cool [8D]  Guess I did learn a thing or two in school.

Ahhh, sorry Ian. Now it makes sense to me why you suggested the dude that custom makes decals.Dunce [D)] Well, I plan on making them with decal sheets, if I can find a clear image of them. So far, haven't found one. Currently, I'm more afraid of the cymbals than I am the symbolsBig Smile [:D]

The heads are gonna be made out of different shades of clear PVC, depending on the drum.

This is too cool, Steve....

Can you turn down brass rod on a lathe to make the cymbals?

First rate scratchbuilding! Send a finished pic of that to Mr. Peart. I'm sure he would appreciate it.

Cracked me up to see Neil do an animated cameo in the "Aqua Teen Hunger Force Movie".

Thanks, guys. I'm gonna give vaccuforming a try for the cymbals. I really need to pick up my pace. I've been taking my time, measuring my own real drum stands, etc., because I don't want any of this to look out of scale. I have succeeded in making a snare drum stand and am pleased with the results. The hard part, if you look at the stands in the ref pic, is that all the legs are double braced. I'll send over a shot of the finished snare stand today, so you can see what I'm talking about.

SST- I might, if I could figure out how...Big Smile [:D]

Wow Steve, you're doing a great job.

I think I would have started off with Ringo's kit from the early Beatles day, but you pick your own battles, I guess!

I can't wait to see how your cymbals turn out. The symbols, too!

So long folks!

Thanks. Ringo's is in the lineup, he's my fave. But the paint job on that kit got me worried, thinking that Neil's was at least a solid color. And I want to do a really good job on that kit, so practicing all the elements X 4 will hopefully earn me the experience to do his up right.

Great detail on those drums!Thumbs Up [tup]

I saw Rush about six weeks ago at the Cricket Pavilion here in Phoenix. This was the second time I had seen them, and although I thought they were better last time, they still put on a terrific show!

After you finish the drums, perhaps you can scratchbuild a model of Geddy Lee's keyboard equipment!Smile [:)]

Wow, now there's a project! That set up is a small fortress. I saw them over twenty years ago, it was unreal for me. I worshipped them as a younug teenager.

Well, SteveM, Rush are definitely still going strong! Their newest album, Snakes and Arrows almost topped the Billboard album chart a few months back and all the good seats sold out when Rush played Phoenix in July (an outdoor venue, too!). I managed to snag one of the precious few copies of Snakes... issued on vinyl (180-gram vinyl, at that!Thumbs Up [tup]), and although I was disappointed in much of the music (too many slow songs and structures that sounded alike), the opening cut "Far Cry" is a goodie, and as usual, Neil Peart always has interesting things to say.

Have you ever read Neil's books? He's had three published: Ghost Rider, a book about how he got over the tragic deaths of his daughter and first wife by riding around the country on a small motorcycle; Travelling Music: The Soundtrack to my Life and Times, about a trip to Big Bend National Park in Texas he took while driving a top of the line BMW sports car and the music he listened to, both in the car and while growing up (this one's become a "desert island" book for me) and Roadshow: Landscape With Drums, about the band's 2004 tour. All are excellent reads, although Ghost Rider, by the nature of its subject matter gets heavy and depressing at times.

Hi Jim- progress halted, but I've been thinking about getting back to it. I get so caught up in fine detail and making it as accurate as possible that it slows me to point of boredom. But I want to get back. Probably this week.

Thanks for asking, it is enough to inspire me into some action.

Sounds like my model tornado chase vehicle. Sometimes I'll spend seemingly weeks on one or two small parts, especially something that requires a lot of filling and sanding, filling and sanding some more, filling and sanding some more, ad nauseum. More recently, it's a little camera tripod that's been giving me headaches.

Wow!! Look at that!  Very nice looking drumset!

That's definitely something I've never thought about doing!  I guess that I get a little worn out tearing down and setting up the 1:1 versions all the time!

I'm hopefully going to buy a digital camera when I get some extra money for the holidays, then if I can figure things out, I'll try to post some pictures.

Jim,

Now there's an original idea!  I would love to see pics of that myself.  Hopefully, you've been a good boy so Santa brings you a camera! Propeller [8-]
