Kleenex for clothing in 1/35??
Posted by model maniac 96 on Saturday, August 22, 2009 10:27 AM
Hi everybody, I have heard about using thinly rolled sheets epoxy putty for clothing in 1/35 scale, but what about Kleenex? I have only heard about using it in 1/18 or bigger, is there any reason it would not work in 1/35?

Thanks, Jim

MM, I use it all the time in 1/35 for flags, tarps, and VS-17 panels. Just use it just like you would in larger scale.

Ok, thank you very much modelchasm! I have not used it before, but from what I understand you just douse it in thinned white glue, apply it, and add folds and stuff with a damp (with water) paintbrush, do I have the general idea?

You're right on there, Jim. Just mix the glue with warm water until its about like milk. Dip the tissue in and apply where you want it. However, be careful and let it dip back into the bowl before you apply to from dousing the model. You'll have plenty of time to work the tissue so don't worry about time.

HINT: Don't use tissue w/ a pattern stamped into it. Just swipe a cheap roll next time you're at a hotel/ public restroom ... it'll last you forever.

What works better than Kleenex (facial tissue) is tissue paper like used when wrapping clothing in a present box.  It is a tighter weave, which looks closer in scale.  It is also stronger so it can be manipulated more while setting and doesn't tear as easily.

Kleenex works well, but as mentioned above, it can tear easily, especially when wet with the glue/water solution.  Be careful, have patience and it will work out! I've used it to make 1/35 scale Zeltbahns (WWII German poncho/shelter half), cloth helmet covers, bedspreads, Willy's Jeep "canvas" soft tops, bandages, slings and blankets for casualties.  I paint mine (with acrylics) when they are still damp and found that the paint helps strengthen them; it also creates a neat faded cloth effect too.  Once dry, you can re-paint with enamels or acrylics, which also adds to the strength of the material.

SON OF A ... Tissue paper! Nice. Will take this one and put it in my "how-to" book .... but don't tell the wife I'm about to raid her tissue paper stash!!!
