Lindbergs 1/16 Scale Concord Stagecoach Build Step by Step
Posted by modelmaniac1967 on Thursday, September 20, 2007 7:59 AM

Hello to all, this may have been touched upon on this forum, however I have after careful researching for a very long time and the lack of research I thought what I would do is record my work on the concord to share with any one else that may be having a hard time or just would like to see how I tackle this strange modeling subject. I will keep adding my progress until I have finished it, and with my current work schedule this could be a while. So enjoy and please feel free to add any comments or suggestions at any time as I usually build autos or airplanes, this is a first for me for a stage coach and the most challenging is gonna be the horse and the figures.....

Ok I have started the kit and have progressed into it some what so I have glued the horses together and have been working on them to get ready for paint and the main body of the stage coach. However from here on out I plan to photo it step by step....

The mock up of the main body......Figures give some scale to it...A lot of primer has been used. If your not familiar with lindberg kits, they are awesome models, great subject matter, however on this kit, there is a lot of time spent filling in sink marks, and various other short comings. The horses them selves did not meet in a lot of places, such as around the mane, tail and undersides. I have already primed and sanded and filled the horses. I am on the last check before painting them.

I love seeing this.  I have one of these in the stash.  My Mom fell in love with it and bought it for me to build.  How is the walking stick? Mine is busted and I'm going to replace it with wood or metal when I do it.

Yep it is still available.  It was a limited run kit, but Model Expo had it in their recent flyer along with a new kit of a Union Artillery piece with, crew, team, and caisson. They are out there so look for them.

Yes I have that same flyer from expo and it looks like the artillery model has the same exact horses and bottom carriage. The only draw back to the stagecoach kit is the horses. The horses have the same pose on two of them. I have been thinking of reposing them in some way but do not feel that my skills are good enough. I have not had much time this last few days to work on the kit. One thing I do suggest is to drill the hinges on the doors so they are poseable. More coming soon.

I got a few more things done last night, not a lot but had about an hour to work on things. These are two of the three luggage boxes that they provide in the kit. They go together really easy. Will need to do a lot of clean up on the bigger box.Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Top photo: I am almst done with the doors, My reference material from the net doesnt show a closeup of the interior but I am guessing that the real stage coaches must have been pretty smooth so I filled and removed all sink marks in the door, this is the last step before painting

middle photo:This just shows the extent of clean up on the parts

last photo:the inner side of the wheels have injector pin marks that should been cleaned up on such a large kit as you will be able to see the inner sides of the wheels after it is built.

a little mock up of the driver and shot gun. The figures are really detailed however you will spend a lot of time on cleanup of the figures and getting rid of the mold lines and re creasing the clothes. I will need a lot of help on painting the figures. Like I said earlier post that figures and horses are the hardest things in the world for me to paint.

A little off from the subject matter at hand, however here are a couple of 1/9th scale kettenkrad and zundapp drivers that a friend painted for me several years back that has deceased that I plan to use as reference material for the skin tones and shading. I know they are too shiny but I cant bring myself to touching them up since they were done by a good friend of mine that has passed away. I still havent finished that kettenkrad or the zundapp, but I should so they would look natural sitting on them, the kettenkrad is the dragon kettenkrad and the instruction sheet, like the instruction sheet for the lindberg stagecoach really are very difficult to follow because they were drawn as one big mock up and you have to read it step and study the instruction sheet to figure out where everything goes. I have been curious as if the revell 1\9th scale kettenkrad is better built, if it is then Ill get that kit to finish.....

I have done a lot of research on skin tones and painting figures, a lot of them reference vallejo paints and paints that are very hard to get in the states, that makes it frustrating when you can not use the same paints as the reference material. Does anyone have a good site or know of a good reference materail that uses model master paints as the paint of choice to paint figures? Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated. I figure if I can not paint the figures or the horses to look natural and not ruin the look of the stage coach I can always finish the stage coach by itself and put that in a diorama....

Her's a great way to start on a great skin tone, MM--First coat your figs witha base coat of any tan or white-ish color. Then use burnt sienna+ white mixed together in various degrees to get an awesome skin tone. You can add a little yellow ochre for variation. You can use oils or finer acryics, like Artist's style in a tube...the raw sienna is good for painting creases too.

Another way to do it is to paint the face in off-white, and then do a thick wash of the same raw sienna+white OIL paint over the flesh parts. Let this sit for about five minutes, and then with a soft, lint-free cloth/tissue, wipe it 90% off, leaving only the tint of it on the higher parts, and the creases will be nicely defined. Try it out on an extra figure first.

These are the best way to get a good skin tone on a figure. Here's an example of what it would look like.

Thank you, I will give that a try. Since figures kinda make me shy away from them. I love figures and especially the whole garage kit thing but never tried them for fear of trashing them. That figure looks awesome. Thank you again.

Ok I have some time today and I just got done doing the final priming of the main body of the stagecoach!!! Question that I have wrestled with is to paint it brown or red. I have done a lot of research on the net and they were either red or brown. I was thinking of painting it red since the wheels should be yellow. It would be colorful, but then again if it was brown it may be more authentic. I am not sure as I also model cars planes or tanks this one is very hard. I am gonna go to the hobby shop and get a can of red and brown and spray different parts to get a feel for it in either red or brown...

Well I do not like the brown, that does not look good at all so I have settled for the red. Im starting out flat, althought the decals will not look good on the flat when it comes to the decals Ill airbrush that part gloss then Ill hit it all up with a semi gloss clear coat.

REd? Hmmm...really? I would've thought Black? It seems to me that most of the ones I've seen in movies seemed to be an elegant gloss black...where'd you get the reference that they were red?

These are a few of the reference sites, most are either red brown, I actually have yet to see black. Thats the thing with this subject matter. Its hard to get good reference material based on modeling one, and Im with you, seems strange red, out side of the wells fargo bank stagecoach I thought they were all brown. But after seeing a lot of them red it will go better with the gold decals and yellowish wheels and running gear. I just didn't like the brown it look more rust than anything. Black is interesting now. May have to rethink the color again as black would cover most of everything...

HUH! Who woulda thought?!

After seeing all those links and the proper color for them, I'd say stick with the red! They look great like that all built up! Plus, it's accurate--can't go wrong with "accurate"! Big Smile [:D]

Gotta think though that that color woulda really stirred up the Indians out there in the high grass?!Angry [:(!]Laugh [(-D]

I like black thou because im not sure how the red will look after the decals are clear coated, semi gloss, flat, or gloss. Again there are so many of them that are gloss and not. Its a harder subject matter than I thought.

Long time no post, got side tracked by other things at work and other model projects, I am determined to get this project done however, the only thing that I have done to the kit is reworked the horses a little bit, the tails do not line up when glued together. Other than that no new photos to show, hopefully soon.

Just a thought here, but I do not use reference materials for getting any flesh tones that I plan.  I generally can mix up anything using any sort of brown, red, flesh tone, light tans, etc.  What I think you might try is to take a look at pictures of someone who might actually be from the area that your subject material is from.  For instance, if you know your subject matter was in Northern Germany at the time, go seek images of people and places from there now.  Look at how their skins tones look and adjust your color mixing as needed.  That's kind of what I do.

Look at the skins tones and explanation I gave for the face here:

Thank you for the info jigsawman, that is probably the way I am gonna go with the fig painting, especially for the skin tones, i have done such an exstensive search and it all comes down to personal preference, i have decided that the hardest part of this kit to finish for me will be the horses and the figs, so that is what I am gonna concentrate on first to get out of the way. Figure base coated with auto primer and then a coat of flat white to start the painting process.

Today I finished the seats for the kit, painted them black with a smei gloss coat added to help simulated leather. Put in a little bit more time on the wagon wheels and the frame for the stage coach.
