Long Time No update, for any one following this thread, I apologize, life has gotten in the way of my modeling efforts, I am still trying to work thru a rough part of my life right now but hope to be back to finish this thread and finish this unique model.

Like I was saying in the last response, if you build this kit and go with red, paint it gloss red first, or use future over the flat, I didnt. I went flat, spray testors clear over the top and it wasnt completely glossy. now I have a few slivery decals. Not bad enough to strip and start over. I will leave it at that and continue.

I hope to be back with regular updates in about a month......Until then if any one has a kit like this they are working on then feel free to share your progress to keep the thread going and alive!

Regards Modelmaniac1967......

I do have a recommendation. I painted the coach flat red, then went back and had to clear coat it, to save time it would be easier to just paint it gloss red and then decals, then dull coat. I made the mistake of going to flat red right away.

I have something to post, today I applied the decals to the main stage coach, now I have to wait a few days for them to dry then I will clear coat them again and then dull coat them.

I have GOT to go on record and disagree here. They are NOT awesome models...actually those are the kits that for me wind up getting ditched. Perfect case in point--thier Army Attack Cobra. even the rocket pods are face molded to be viewed from the outside, molded about 75% of the way around with a big pocket in there.  The interior is a complete joke, toys are better and you are given a decal to add to the stump that is supposed to be the TAT101 gun ! AT best I wil be able to salvage most of the fueselage and use it at the N209J prototype helicopter which it was clearly modeled after after I carve off the tailboom.

Yes they do have a lot of faults with bad molding, and for the stage coach kit a lot of sink marks and they are always in a bad place to fill. I do agree with you, they do have some cool subject matter however.

These are a few of the reference sites, most are either red brown, I actually have yet to see black. Thats the thing with this subject matter. Its hard to get good reference material based on modeling one, and Im with you, seems strange red, out side of the wells fargo bank stagecoach I thought they were all brown. But after seeing a lot of them red it will go better with the gold decals and yellowish wheels and running gear. I just didn't like the brown it look more rust than anything. Black is interesting now. May have to rethink the color again as black would cover most of everything...

One more to add to the list in historic Columbia California.  I rode this coach many many years ago and now, at 41 still remember that ten minute ride and being held up!  It is natural wood stained to a high gloss.

Got some more work done on the stage coach as the figures are drying I wanted to see how the roll up curtains would look like weathered with some varying degrees of airbrushing and dry brushing and this is what I came up with. I was about to airbrush the horses when I noticed that I had more work to do on the horses, where the halves meet in the mouth area alot of the teeth detail was lost so I will have to do more work on them before I start painting them. More updates to come in the near future.

Photobucket back up thank god, yes it is really pale and after I painted it as a base coat I thought that was a waste as you are supposed to start dark and work up to high lights, thank you for the in fo on the paints, moneys tight now so Ill keep it as future reference and use what I have now. Thank you also for sharing how you do your painting, I can use all the help right now.

You oasked a while back about souces for Vallejo paints in the states. Here are a couple:

The Hobby Bunker

Military Miniatures Warehouse

Your skin tones look very pale, but that could be the photos. I use Vallejo paints starting with beige red as a base caucasian skin color. To this I add dark fleshtone either to arker the skin, as for an Indian or well tanned European. More darkfleshtone is added to the mix for shadows. Depending on what Have for my base color, I'll either go with straight beige red or beige red mixed with pale flesh or sunny skintone for the first highlight and add more pale flesh for the second highlight and finally, well diluted pale flesh for the highest light. I use palpe flesh for the whites of the eyes, In this scale, you'll need to use either brown, blue or green for the iris. The irsi should be 1/2 to 2/3 of the eye socket and be about 1/3 covered by the upper eyelid.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Today I finished the seats for the kit, painted them black with a smei gloss coat added to help simulated leather. Put in a little bit more time on the wagon wheels and the frame for the stage coach.

Thank you for the info jigsawman, that is probably the way I am gonna go with the fig painting, especially for the skin tones, i have done such an exstensive search and it all comes down to personal preference, i have decided that the hardest part of this kit to finish for me will be the horses and the figs, so that is what I am gonna concentrate on first to get out of the way. Figure base coated with auto primer and then a coat of flat white to start the painting process.

I have done a lot of research on skin tones and painting figures, a lot of them reference vallejo paints and paints that are very hard to get in the states, that makes it frustrating when you can not use the same paints as the reference material. Does anyone have a good site or know of a good reference materail that uses model master paints as the paint of choice to paint figures? Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated. I figure if I can not paint the figures or the horses to look natural and not ruin the look of the stage coach I can always finish the stage coach by itself and put that in a diorama....

Just a thought here, but I do not use reference materials for getting any flesh tones that I plan.  I generally can mix up anything using any sort of brown, red, flesh tone, light tans, etc.  What I think you might try is to take a look at pictures of someone who might actually be from the area that your subject material is from.  For instance, if you know your subject matter was in Northern Germany at the time, go seek images of people and places from there now.  Look at how their skins tones look and adjust your color mixing as needed.  That's kind of what I do.

Look at the skins tones and explanation I gave for the face here:

Long time no post, got side tracked by other things at work and other model projects, I am determined to get this project done however, the only thing that I have done to the kit is reworked the horses a little bit, the tails do not line up when glued together. Other than that no new photos to show, hopefully soon.

I like black thou because im not sure how the red will look after the decals are clear coated, semi gloss, flat, or gloss. Again there are so many of them that are gloss and not. Its a harder subject matter than I thought.

HUH! Who woulda thought?!

After seeing all those links and the proper color for them, I'd say stick with the red! They look great like that all built up! Plus, it's accurate--can't go wrong with "accurate"! Big Smile [:D]

Gotta think though that that color woulda really stirred up the Indians out there in the high grass?!Angry [:(!]Laugh [(-D]

REd? Hmmm...really? I would've thought Black? It seems to me that most of the ones I've seen in movies seemed to be an elegant gloss black...where'd you get the reference that they were red?

Well I do not like the brown, that does not look good at all so I have settled for the red. Im starting out flat, althought the decals will not look good on the flat when it comes to the decals Ill airbrush that part gloss then Ill hit it all up with a semi gloss clear coat.

Ok I have some time today and I just got done doing the final priming of the main body of the stagecoach!!! Question that I have wrestled with is to paint it brown or red. I have done a lot of research on the net and they were either red or brown. I was thinking of painting it red since the wheels should be yellow. It would be colorful, but then again if it was brown it may be more authentic. I am not sure as I also model cars planes or tanks this one is very hard. I am gonna go to the hobby shop and get a can of red and brown and spray different parts to get a feel for it in either red or brown...

Thank you, I will give that a try. Since figures kinda make me shy away from them. I love figures and especially the whole garage kit thing but never tried them for fear of trashing them. That figure looks awesome. Thank you again.
