And here we go, Icarus is reborn.
When I had mentioned the possibility of scratch building the model, the work of it got me searching again. In doing that I found something that should work, a 3D printed Icarus. The size of this is much smaller than what I had, but I prefer it. This is much closer to the scale I'd want for a water dio. Now, with the Icarus scaled back, I can go ahead and scale up the diorama some.
As of now I do not intend to make an interior, or at least, not to the degree I hoped to do with the other kit.
About this model:
It is 1/96 scale measuring in at 135mm. As stated, this is 3D printed, so that said, it is not without its problems. The entire model has a very course texture resulting from the printing process. This is something I'll have to deal with. I don't care for the large seam at the nose cone, so that will need to be filled in. Lastly, adding window glass will fun, and I'll probably have to print my own decals by scaling down the ones that came with the Monsters and Motion kit. Printing my own decals will be a new experience for me, and I am sure it will have its own unique challenges.
This may not be the perfect answer to what I wanted, but it sure beats building one from scratch. Hopefully, I can navigate through the challenges and get this done.
PS: If anyone has input on getting the hull glass smooth, I am all ears. I started sanding and I am able to knock down a lot of the coarsness, but, it's still somewhat pitted. I don't know how far I can go with sanding a 3D printed piece. Does the pitting go all the way through? Will I need to coat the model with something? These are my immediate concerns.
