You know Bakster instead of the Icarus you could have bought this vintage flocked King Kong bubble bath dispenser...

PS: Don't tell him my plan. I want this to be a complete surprise.

Lastly--I may actually have an update this weekend. If the King Kong bubble bath dispenser doesn't knock him out of his shoes, seeing an Icarus update ought to.

Yes

And here we go, Icarus is reborn.

When I had mentioned the possibility of scratch building the model, the work of it got me searching again. In doing that I found something that should work, a 3D printed Icarus. The size of this is much smaller than what I had, but I prefer it. This is much closer to the scale I'd want for a water dio. Now, with the Icarus scaled back, I can go ahead and scale up the diorama some.

As of now I do not intend to make an interior, or at least, not to the degree I hoped to do with the other kit.

About this model:

It is 1/96 scale measuring in at 135mm. As stated, this is 3D printed, so that said, it is not without its problems. The entire model has a very course texture resulting from the printing process. This is something I'll have to deal with. I don't care for the large seam at the nose cone, so that will need to be filled in. Lastly, adding window glass will fun, and I'll probably have to print my own decals by scaling down the ones that came with the Monsters and Motion kit. Printing my own decals will be a new experience for me, and I am sure it will have its own unique challenges.

This may not be the perfect answer to what I wanted, but it sure beats building one from scratch. Hopefully, I can navigate through the challenges and get this done.

PS: If anyone has input on getting the hull glass smooth, I am all ears. I started sanding and I am able to knock down a lot of the coarsness, but, it's still somewhat pitted. I don't know how far I can go with sanding a 3D printed piece. Does the pitting go all the way through? Will I need to coat the model with something? These are my immediate concerns.

Thanks for stopping in.

Did some YouTube searches and the process seems to be sanding, then filler.  In my case, I will sand only enough to remove the high-spots and then filler for the pitting.

Well, I am learning a lot about 3d printing. It seems to be a common theme that prints need some serious cleanup work after. It’s neat technology, but it has a way to go, IMO. I am not complaining, this print gives me all that I need for a cool build.

From what I have gathered people sand their prints and then use bondo, wood filler, spackle, or epoxy to smooth the piece out. After weighing all the options, I will try Smooth-On XTC-3D Print Coating epoxy. This seems like the fastest way to get what I want. It’s sandable, and it should make quick work of filling in any remaining imperfections. The downside is, I consider it expensive, and I will need to be careful in how much I apply, there is a risk of losing too much detail.

While I wait for the epoxy, there is more work to be done on the shell.

I know you already came up with a fix, but I think Mr. Surfacer has been used by a lot of people on here. and it seem's to work.

I have never tryed it, so I dont have any Idea if it's what you need.

If it was me, I would sand the living "heck" out of it , then hit it with a Black primer. That should show you if you got all the high spot's.

If Little Timmy's "idea's" turn out to be  "crap" ....... do we get to EXPERIMENT on him ???

You could ............ but, we can't seem to get him out of the cage !!!

( apperently, he "Like's" it in there .....)

That's just wierd .............

I’d be afraid to sand this that deep, might be left with a stub.

Lol...

Or maybe it's time to send this guy, Kung Fu Ape. It'll be the last time Zaius drones on.

Indeed! You know... in this case, it might not be his fault. He has nerve damage in his leg that causes him to involuntarily flinch. The poor beast.

Bakster: I'd buy you and Timmy matching Halloween costumes if I only had the dough. Though I'm afraid if you wore that you'd only get bananas for trick or treat...

On a more serious note I'm not sure what else you can do with a 3D printed parts other than putting and sanding the heck out of it.

I had some figures run off the local library's 3D printer and they were really rough.

I had to break this extra material away to get to the figure:

If you expand the photo you can see how rough it is. And this is after sanding and filed the krap outta it. Good luck with the Icarus!!!
