Say Capn-- thanks for the link. I didn't watch it yet but I surely will!  I will let you know when I do.

Don't get me started about the Coen Bros films. I love em.

I don't think I have seen, The Quiet Earth. It sounds interesting.

You'll want about 90 minutes, and to run this full screen.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fra8_lukQJ0

I was bored one night and walked to the local cinema, which had taken to running repertoire/art house films (my town had gone from 7 screens to over 19 in only about a year).  Wolked in cold--no press, no info, no idea.  Couple of years' later went to the same joint, and equally 'cold' to see Raising Arizona.  (Nothing much like going "full immersion" into a Coen Bros film Smile)

I apologize for being absent for soooooo long.

Your on the home stretch ,... "go team" !

As for the paint on the nose, if it was a gold color, it would have been crispifyed upon re-entry...( think exhaust pipes on your average motorcycle.)

The gold would easily turn to multiple colors from the heat. I have seen exhaust pipes with an actual rainbow on them!

Go with silver, then a transparent purple, followed by a wash of black....

( test on something you DONT like first, .... I may have read the wrong scrool...)

Dont worry about the thumbprint, paint it Rust , and call it "Battle Damage"

The.... "PROOF," will be in the pudding.

Pudding? We're having pudding?

Oh YES, my friend. We are having ....

Don't forget, we are heading towards Christmas.

Good luck!!!

If they don't work out you can always put a giant flaming skull on the Icarus. That ought to impress those silly apes...

Lol. Indeed.

Not long after my last post I was emailed a color proof for my review. They look ok I guess. I told them to proceed. Ready for it? The.... "PROOF," will be in the pudding. Hehe.

So with luck, I might have them by the weekend.

I hope I don't go via flaming skull. Landon might not like that. He's in it for the glory so, I don't think he wants to show up looking like some rad punk dude. Taylor might like it though. I doubt that was a cigar he was smoking.

Well--I am still patiently waiting on the decals. I should be receiving an order update soon. I hope.

So that my waiting is not a total loss I took time to print the decals on paper--cut them out and fit them to the model for sizing. Using Evergreen plastic strip, I then copied the paper decals and I will use the strips as templates. I went this route because paper tends to tear and warp. The plastic will hold its shape and it should give me a more accurate length to cut my decals.

So now--I just need the decals.

Bakster get back to normal Or, just back to Norman, Norman Bates, that is . . .

Hehe.

CapnMac82
Because it was on, I watched 2001: A Space Oddessy on TCM last night.  Followed that up by watching The Quiet Earth on YT.  Which is still a great bit of NZ film-making.

Darn--I missed 2001. I would have DVRd it. I don't think I have seen, The Quiet Earth. It sounds interesting.

Greg

You know what my first though seeing the apes sitting around the conference table was?

"Hey, why aren't they wearing thier masks?"

I'm not making this up. Pandemic insanity.

Greg, I hear ya. It will be a great day when things get back to normal.

Greg
On the homemade decals, you might have to post in another section to get the attention of the folks who do that. I'm clueless about homemade decals, amongst many other things.

Regarding the decals... my new ones fared a little better, but not by much. These work fine for flat surfaces, but once you move into the realm of multidimensions, it gets very tough. I've spent hours on the nose stripes and you wouldn't think it possible. I won't go into the horror stories but in the end, I failed at it. Granted--I am very particular-- but getting there should not be this difficult. These decals are too fragile.

So--my next move is to seek out better decals. I will have them printed with an on-line printer and hopefully, they will go on better. I need an advantage because if I am struggling to apply decals on the nose cone--I don't have a chance in h*** with the stripes aft of the windows. There are more angles to deal with.

That is the latest. So close, but so far.

Tanker-Builder

Hi;

I like what you've done so far. I believe the Nose Cone was supposed to be an ablative Bronze Color. To Ablate ( to peel) is what came to mind! This would also account for the light gold/bronze color!

Hi TB--thanks for the input. Below is what the movie prop looks like. It almost looks like aluminum.

Looking good, Stevie. Yes

Way to stick with it. I too like Cliff's theory on the waviness.

Or, maybve you could look at it as foreshadowing to the next construction step.

Thanks, Greg. Sticking with it is getting harder to do. This project is fighting me hard right now. The home made decals don't do well on angled surfaces, and it's been an insurmountable struggle. They flake far too easily, and they lack the stickyness I need to position them. The biggest issue though, is how quickly they disintegrate. I started with the nose cone decal and hours later I am no closer to getting them on than when I started. In fact... I burned through all the duplicates I made and I just printed more. I was near abandoning the idea in leiu of airbrushing. That would be no easy task either. All is not lost though. I may have figured a way to make the decals work. Now, if I can just get them to hold together long enough. I don't know if I used too much sealent on them or not not enough? Or is that the nature of homemade decals?

Anyway...I can't quit now!

A little more progress done.

I painted the nose cone a custom mix of Alcad Copper and Aluminum. Many finished models have it painted gold. There is an article I read (had been posted to this thread), stated it should be gold. However--every screencap I can get from the movie shows it not gold, but more of a silver. In fact, the article stated, if I remember correctly, that they didn't do the movie prop in gold. They wanted it weathered, perhaps burned off. In either case--I don't care for how the models look with it gold, so I settled on a mix of it.

The green areas are a mix of Tamiya Interior Green and white. I felt the green was too dark for a ship that has traveled in interstellar space for so long and having suffered through atmospheric re-entry. I wanted it lightened some. It's probably a full shade lighter than straight from the bottle.

What is left to do? I need to paint and install the flaring thrusters, apply the exterior decals, do some reentry weathering, followed by a final seal coat.

Almost done with the ship. Drinks

That looks really good!

The waviness might be buckling in the hull due to re-entry... Wink

Thanks Man.

Yeah exactly. That is how I see it too. It was a tough crash landing. Second to that, the issue is pretty minor and it won't been seen anyway.

Not much to see here but... it is forward progress.

I masked the windows and gave it two applications of Tamiya Fine Surface Primer. This paint wet sands so nicely that I opted to not apply a gloss coat. It feels glass smooth as is and the decals should stick just fine.

As I feared the epoxy debacle left me with some minor waviness. It passes the Bakster pain gauge, though.

I will probably paint the nose cone next, then thrusters, and/or the panels forward of the windows. Decals and weathering after that.

End of update.
