I appreciate the replies. Better to know projects are 'back burner' than abandoned, especially after all that impressive work!

Cheers

Greg

Hi,

I had to put my model on hold for awhile due to some personal/home issues, and kind of never got back to finishing it up.  Maybe now might be a good time to try and finish it up.

I am generally loath to revive long-dormant threads, but I stumbled across this very interesting one last night---since I'm in the midst of building a far-less-ambitious version of the same kit.

Can any of the original participants offer updates on their projects? It was going great guns, then just seemed to die off all at once. Love the spirit and the work...curious to see how they might have come out.

Thanks.

Greg

I built that old Lindberg kit back in the 1960s.

Definitely a night and day change in it's appearance!

That old kit really looks good now.Big SmileYes

Thanks!

This stuff is "Ace" house brand red oxide. The antifouling is genuine "Rustoleum" Red Oxide.

Very nice! I have to find another Deck Red paint. My bottle of Floquil Red Oxide is gone.

( what happened to my picture?)

I've been doing the same thing with the paint a little, GM.

I put a waterline on it, didn't like the color, so sanded, then decided the black was too black, and sanded again. Anyway, here's a picture. It shows that this is quite a nice looking hull when lengthened to the proper dimendions:

I've been working on it. For some reason, I am in one of those mind sets that make me redo a lot of stuff. Hope to have pictures soon.

The original kit is 1/390, but when we lengthened the hull to the match the beam, the new scale is 1/295...or so. I'm going to use 1/350 PE, but I think GM likes to go a size larger.

I missed something along the way. The kit is about 1/390 but now length to about 1/350 or so? Correct? So why 1/200 railings? Same kit-bashed Lindberg or did you scratch build another?

Looking good! Mine is sidelined while I work on the Liberty, but we are very close in appearance. I still may waterline mine as the hull is a little bumpy.

The thing sort of reminds me of the old freighter that had run aground off of Cape Nay N.J.  I wasn't far off the beach and eventually cracked.  There used to be a large sign pasted or painted on its starboard side near the bow.  People were warned to stay off her as it was so dangerous.  At first I thought it was left over from WWII but later I heard it was built before that.

I've had a lot of free time in the last week and have pushed ahead with the SS Evelyn. The smaller boats and the upper masts are from the kit, everything else except the hull is scratch built.

I ordered a set of 1/200 ships ladders from Toms. I need something like twelve and there weren't that many of the same size in my goodies, so it seemed worth the $ 15.00.

I was just going to post some similar diagrams! Our masts seem to come out of the deck without the "mast table" shown here. The heavy lift is stepped on a pedestal. Other than that this is what we are looking at. Note that the running gear/wires go to the winches, while the topping lift wires are secured to a cleat or some kind of chain in some cases.

Here is the foredeck of what seems to be a smaller ship but generally the same arrangement. We won't have the booms stepped on that crosstree looking thing. Ours would be smaller:

And here is a heavy lift. I'm not going to bother with so much detail:

Both from the American Merchant Seaman's Manual.

Would you care to comment on these two diagrams?

Looks like you are getting way ahead of us, GM. Re the masts and cargo gear, this is what I see in the pictures:

There are two booms for each hatch, so four on each mast. They are at least double part topping lifts, so you have a block at the mast and also at the head of the boom. This is different from the Liberty, which has single topping lifts. For the running wire there is a block at the heel of the boom, underneath, and one at the head of the boom, underneath.

For #2 hatch there is also a heavy lift boom which is stepped on deck just aft of the mast.

The straps are no more than an eighth of an inch thick and about four inches wide. There should be a screw thing in the middle so that they can be tightened. In this scale a mere paint stripe would be enough.

Wow, your model is looking great.  Thanks for your feedback/suggestions on my hatch covers.  I think I'm gonna try some additional ideas on my hatch covers.

PF- you have a good idea there. But first of all don't try to solve everything at once.

The straps, battens or whatever they are on the Trumpeter Liberty ship are in my opinion way too big. Why I think that I don't know because its hard to find pictures of the on deck back then but they scale out to be maybe 9" high and 18" wide.

I'd suspect they were quite a bit thinner and probably less wide.

My Evelyn doesn't have them in any pictures I've seen, and in fact the hatches seem to be open while she's sailing.

Try making the canvas top by itself and adding the straps/ battens with tape or tin foil.

I'm working on how to make the hatch covers look like canvas stretched over wood. Current thinking is nylon stocking material stretched over a basswood shape, immersed in glue and painted.

Hi,

I got messing around with my 3D printer today and decided to try and print up some hatch coamings and hatch covers for the ship to see how they might turn out.  The coamings look OK, but the hatch covers and the paltform in between them, for the boom winches came out a little rough.  I didn't have my printer set at its lowest speed so that may have something to do with it.  I may try those again, or I may just try and mock those pieces up with styrene.  But for now I'm going to play around a little with seeing if I can bound the ABS plastic to my existing cargo decks and see how that looks.
