1/350 Mini Hobby Models WIP
Posted by modelcrazy on Tuesday, November 18, 2014 11:47 PM

Along with my 1/700 Hobby Boss Arizona and the around 8 group builds I'm involved in, I plan on completing, eventually, the 1/350 Mini Hobby Models (Trumpeter?) Arizona my wife and daughters bought me for my birthday, circa 2002. I also received Toms Model Works extensive detail set along with the kit.
I don't pretend to know anything about the Arizona's details, except the 4 or 5 times I've visited her at the memorial (I was stationed in Oahu many years ago), however the kit looks good to my untutored eye. I may be scolded about this later.
First off the kit seems to be designed like the 1/700 Hobby Boss and old classic Revell kit, with the seam along the casement wall. For some aggravating reason, the deck has 2 seams, one just aft of turret 2 and one in front of turret 1. It's beyond me to understand why manufactures do this. The deck planking also has raised detail which I don't care for, and can't find any after market wood deck for this particular manufacturer. That's ok though, I don't want to go that far with it. I probably would go all out for the Trumpeter 1/200 kit, but not now.
I still haven't decided to display it on the stand or in a water scene. Possibly calm harbor water as she's returning from maneuvers at slow ahead sometime late 1941

Here is the 2 piece hull so far (the hull splits at the waterline which I like a lot).

Here is that seam that just plagues me.

And here is the extensive Toms Model Works detail set.

I will post updates as I progress, although it may be at widely spaced intervals. As always, comments, ideas are most welcome.

Go over the seam with thin styrene strip, that is what I did with mine.

Yes to the Revell similarities. It's been discussed a lot on line- you can find a lot of good build logs over on Steelnavy.

I have the kit too- in a Hobby Boss box.

My own take on it is; build it as kitted with PE and whatever add ons you wish to scratch, or, get drawings and go in for some major surgery and have a really accurate model.

I'm going with plan A.

See if you can track down Stillwells book.

EDIT: for some reason only known to the hobby Gods there are a bunch of copies for about $ 25.00 online.

When I bought mine several years ago, they all were well over $ 100. I bought mine list for $ 65.00 from the gift shop at the memorial.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Thanks, I'll take a look at the book, sounds interesting, love to get it. It must just be packed with info. I pick plan "A" as well, I'm not going to go all out on this one. The only people who will see it are my wife and I. I seriously doubt if my daughters, son-in-laws and grandchildren even know or remember the significance of the Arizona, let alone to know or care if a ladder is in the wrong place or if the deck is wood or plastic.

If I were to build one for show I would go for the 1/200 version and really put some time into it.
