Yes, they are to protect the hull and channels from the flukes of the anchor:-

Yes the Professor is sadly missed, his posts were always very informative and interesting.  He is a real loss to the forum.  We are fortunate to have experts like dafi around. But still..

Best wishes,

John

It is to protect bow and channels from the anchors :-) It was a standard feature of almost all english ships of most sizes at that time. Cheers, Daniel

That makes sense since the channels and chains were much lower then. May God bless the Prof soul.

I think it had something to do with the anchor, but not exactly sure what?

Steve,

According to this:

http://www.academia.edu/358814/The_Introduction_and_Use_of_Copper_Sheathing_-_A_History

the Victory was first sheathed with copper in 1780.

See page 25 just below the middle of the page with the large paragraph.

I use "Birchwood Casey" brand brass black. Works on brass and solder, sometimes even on stainless wire to make it look aged, as well as copper and bronze. They also have one for blackening aluminum. I got mine at a gun dealer store.

Yes Steve, there were 2 six pounders. I've never used any blackening agent just a black sharpie and a light touch up as needed with black paint.

Steve I see you're going for a later date using those carronades? 1780 I believe they were in use.

I thought the carronade's , should have some sort of wheel's under it , so it could slide side to side , so I cut an old connon I had from my soleil royal , and glued them on . I think they came out OK .

The gunport hinges of the lower deck have the hinge for the small ventilation scuttle in the middle of the gunport. These scuttles were only introduced later on, so the hinges are obsolete and have to be cut off. See 268 + 279. Should be like 317 XXXDAn

Wonderful!!!

Already one remark for later on: The small scuttles on the lower gun port lids have to be cut off, they were introduced only much later on.

Looking good Steve, I removed a 1/2" of the deck aft the fore mast. I have a measurement of 11mm from the fore leading of the grate to the center line of the fore mast opening, hope that helps.

had a go michael , turned it around , added some styrene under it to lift it up a shade . just got to work out how far to cut the deck back .

Steve I did switch them around based on what I saw on the McNary model along with painting the channels black and if I remember correctly had I left them i would be cutting some of the grate anyway shortening the deck. My goal is to preserve as much as the plastic as possible using very little wood as possible,IE: Lateen yard, deadeyes and Qtr deck grates.

Keep up the good work Mate!

For the chains, to be correct, it should have 3 links instead of two as in 1803.

But I do not believe that someone will realise apart from "chain-link-counters" like us ;-)

Great work!
