1/700 WW2 USN Destroyers
Posted by Rob358 on Sunday, December 1, 2019 6:05 PM

Is there a list of 1/700 USN WW2 Destroyers? Any recommendations?

I have the Tamiya USS Hammond but was wondering what others there are

PitRoad/Skywave did Sumners & Gearngs. So did Albatross.
Tamiya did both round bridge square bridge Fletcher, as did Skywave.
Dragon did Bensons & Livermores.
Midship models did Gridley/Mahans.
Flyhawk does 4-pipers as Wards

Oh Boy.

I finally finished my  Flyhawk Four Piper. Almost as nice as my Four Piper from Skywave. I got them for building the ships from the " Destroyermen" series of books. Neat little models But,Never Again!!

1/350 will definitely be my smallest from here on in.

The question was about a list of 1/700 kits.  Gosh, that's a challenge.  I will guess you are interested in injected plastic kits, rather than resin kits.

Possibly from newest to oldest:

Gearing class: Skywave (also repackaged by Midship Models)
Snowman (limited run, available on eBay)
Albatross (old and thin on details, but not horrible)

Sumner class: Skywave (also packaged by Midship Models)
Albatross (old)

Fletcher class: Matchbox (old and quite weak)
Skywave (green box - very old and poor)
Skywave (boxed as USS Callaghan - fairly old and hated by many - I like it)
Tamiya (Round bridge Fletcher - boxed as USS Fletcher)
Tamiya square bridge Fletcher - boxed as USS Cushing)

Benson/Gleaves class:
Skywave made four different sub-groups of this class

Gridley class: four subgroups made by Midship Models - not high quality kits from a beginning mfr

Mahan class: four subgroups made by Midship Models - not high quality kits from a beginning mfr

Four stack destroyers Clemson/Wickes class: Flyhawk - highly detailed and complex kit.

Destroyer escorts were also produced by Skywave.

Undoubtedly, other folks will have comments/ corrections to the above list.  One thing certain is that everybody will disagree on the quality of one or more kits.  :-)
Rick

(Edit: I just re-read Ed's note above and he said nearly the same thing, using one third of the space that my list took)

That's a pretty comprehensive list SL

Steve

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

As Tanker-Builder said, first question should be, Have you built in 1/700 before? If you haven't, be prepared for lotssssssssssssssssssss of tinyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy resin and PE pieces that are supposed to fit in a seemingly impossibly-sized space. To wit, this is a 110-foot subchaser in 1/700:

Dragon does the best greaves/benson class (both as twin packs choice of 1 waterline 1 fullhull, as livermore/monssen & laffey) Tamiya's most recent offering was USS hammann, and snowman's gearing was a 2018 tooling.

Yes, and the Dragon DD's are originally Pitroad kits.

Thr Tamiya is originally a Niko kit.

I bring this up because these kits aren't always eassy to find, and if you look at their origins it's possible to find for instance the original Pitroad/ Skywave kit cheaper than the Dragon or Tamiya reissue.

I'm glad the OP set this conversation in motion.

Thanks.

I'm having trouble finding the Dragon 2 kits in 1 reissues. They look pretty good. I'm going to try to pick up the tamiya fletcher and Cushing in the mean time.

Dragon Benson and Gleaves have nothing to do with Pitroad, it's Dragon's own tooling and vastly better. And Niko is a resin kit producer....unless you are talking about some other company.

A good kit db is scalemates.com

You are correct on both! The scalemates site confused me I guess.
