Tanker-Builder

Hey!!

If you sink that I am going to use a torpedo on your next ship. That is downright the BEST model of an overdone ship I have ever seen.

Thanks Tanker-Builder. I think it's overdone because if you like old ocean liners like I do it's about the only game in town at 1/350. Titanic is probably the last liner I wanted to build but they just don't make any others. I had to pay a fortune to get an old Lusitania!

I googled ocean liner model kits and there are 15 versions of Titanic and one Queen Mary 2 at 1/400. I would love to build a Normandie or Aquitania but I guess those will never be produced. It really is slim pickings for that type of ship.

Looks fabulous.  Don't fret the small stuff.  As my father used to say, "A man on a flying horse will never notice it."  Not really sure what that meant, but it seems to apply.

Did the rigging line come with the ship? Just curious about that.

Again, GREAT JOB!

Bob

Thanks Bob. The rigging is actually some stuff called EZ Line. I bought it on Amazon, it's used mainly for model railroad telephone poles. It stretches which I kind of like since it keeps everything taut. I bought 2 sizes, fine and heavy. I used fine on the funnels and heavy everywhere else.

Why do they call it the "poop" deck? Indifferent

IIRC (and I might not), comes from old French "pope" from  Latin pupis, rear [of a boat].

The noun, in original format means the aftermost deck covered protion of a vessel.

Later also used as a verb, to mean a wave swamping the stern.

That verb then became used for the meaning of being spent or exhausted.

The modern noun (and intransitive verb) meaning is an aliteration of blending exhaust and rear (end).

Interesting, thanks for the explaination.

Have you finished the Titanic?

Yup, it's all done. I posted it a few days ago. The last thing I had to do was the rigging between the two masts and the instructions didn't say anything about anchoring steadying wires till the last page....so it had to get just one line. It came out OK for a first try but it did teach me a lot. Read the instructions to the last page before starting included lol.

very impressive. i know the titanic is beat to death in the modelling world, but a nice example is always interesting. watching you do this build is again getting me excited for the 1/200 kit some day ! i wish i had more luck with the scaledecks. i used it on the le soleil royal im building and the main deck ended up delaminating off the plastic in areas... of course after installation !

Extremely nice work.  You are way to hard on yourself as to your abilities.  If you have a model show near you, enter it

You might be surprised at the result.  Also submit it for the reader gallery here.

Thank you. Well I'm hoping mine stays put! I had a couple of spots at the very edges of the decks separate a tiny bit from handling them when I was putting it together. I put some of my glue on a pin and stuck it in between and that seems to be holding it, fingers are crossed.

Thanks, much appreciated. I think I got ruined by looking at Art Braunschweigers model lol. That thing is a masterpiece. I'm just trying to steadily improve and pick up new and better ways of doing this. I'm enjoying it.

Very nice work! Maybe you should teach newbies like me how to do excellent work!

I also going to check on that EZline product you used.

Thanks. I like the EZ Line a lot. I hope it holds up over time. I'm a newbie too, well I have one under my belt anyway! I have three more ships planned though. I don't know how many models it takes to not be a newbie, maybe one is all it takes lol!

I'd say on a task you took on, newbie no longer.

My opinion on EZ line.

I don't like it.

Initially the plus is that since it's elastic, it seems straightforward to get everything taught and square.

And when you stick your hands into the model, it moves aside in an agreeable way.

Minuses: It's not round/ it's flat. That can show up in photos. It frays. Super glue melts it. And I have a couple of older models where It's disintegrated.

I prefer monofilament, the one sold as Uni-Caenis, It knots well, is very fine, cheap from fly tying sites, and holds up over time.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

That’s my main concern with EZ Line, its longevity. I’m hoping I don’t walk by the model one day and notice the rigging laying on the deck. I’m thinking probably sunlight isn’t very good for it…….or the rest of the model for that matter. In the morning the sun shines through into my home and hits the model for an hour or two. I should probably put a covering over the case to block that.

I googled the longevity of EZ Line before I bought it and I saw quite a few posts on other forums of people who had used it years ago and haven’t had an issue yet. Some were talking four or five years, some did not say the amount of years. Now that I have a confirmed case of it degrading from Bill it gives me pause. I have had it fray when I taped it out of the way a few times but it didn’t cause it to not hold under tension. Time will tell. Hopefully I outlast it, I’m 57!!

Chris,

As others have said, you're doing very well so far.

PE can be a pain in the rear but, usually, it does allow for more fine detail than plastic. I still struggle to put some of it together but it seems obvious to me that you're getting the hang of it quickly enough.

I like Postimage. I use both it and Flickr. I prefer Flickr but now that they've been taken over and have a new policy about the maximum allowed free images, I may migrate back to Postimage. I think your choice is just fine for now.

I've had the Lusitania in my stash for quite a while now and, when you've started building her, I may just start mine and follow along with your build if you do a WIP.

I hope you keep posting your work in progress on the Titanic.

You can leave it where it is.

Just do this, Make a case with U.V. resistant Plexi for the clear top.

Too late. She's already in the case. I'll have to throw a towel over her like a bird cage lol!

An absolute masterpiece you put together here! Im sad it's done as all your great wip posts will fade away now. Looking forward to what you do next.

In the pattern: Scale Shipyard's 1/48 Balao Class Sub! leaning out the list...NOT! Ha, added to it again - Viper MkVii, 1/32 THUD & F-15J plus a weekend madness build!

Thanks TheMongoose, much appreciated. I just started a Lusitania. http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/7/t/184896.aspx I'm glad you liked all the photos, I fiugred I was wearing everyone out with them all. I think I enjoy talking about doing the models as much as actually doing them.

Thanks 1943Mike. Little by little I'm picking up tricks on how to make some of this stuff easier. Titanic is finished, now I'm on to Lusitania. I also will be getting a Normandie. In thinking about it everything I'm building sank!!
