Aside from Ross's undercoating advice, also go with extremely light coats. Be wary of letting paint build up along the masked edges. The first time I ever used yellow was on the leading edges of the wings on a 1/144 Spitfire, and I eventually got fine coverage by simply applying many, many light coats. By keeping each coat so light that the paint never even gets that brief hint of wetness, the edges never built up and there was no perceivaable bump or extra thickness on the yellow compared with the rest of the wing.
