Don't worry, Greg - took me a moment, too. Somethings are meant to be read, others are meant to be sung! "Tomato, tohmato, let's call the whole thing off..." or more appropriately, "Tah-me-ya, Tah-my-ah"?

Might be my tiny keyboard, but I think I sound a little flat there...

That's the theme song to "Laverne & Shirley"...."Tah-me-ya, Tah-my-ah, Schott's beer incorporated..".

Greg
Did I say something dumb up there? I feel I'm missing something obvious here. Whisper

No my friend, my oh brother comment was just aimed at the whole idea of two grown men arguing about the pronunciation of a word. I thought the insuring discussion was enjoyable and funny.
That's all I could think of.

Funny, I'll be watching something like Harry Potter and I will frequently ask my wife "what did he say?". I apparently don't understand English.

To the original question, in my contacts with English-speakers from around the world, it sounds like we Americans tend to say, "dee-cals", and speakers from the Commonwealth tend to say, "deckles".

As for the Japanese model company, as far as I know, they pronounce it as "tah-mee-yah", and that's how I pronounce it, too.  "tuh-my-yuh" sounds a little too redneck for my ear.  "Wakarimasu, Anjin-san?"

The bigger the government, the smaller the citizen.

And I'd like to add the forum title "Decaling" would be pronounced "deck lin" .  No "a" or "g" using my English.

Don't ask the English how to spell anything. What they say and what they spell is two different things. For instance, the place over there spelled Leicester, is pronounced Lester. And Worcester is pronounced Wooster, Worcestershire Sauce os Woostershire Sauce, and the River Thames is the Tems! What is up with that?

Though I must pull you up on one thing, we don't pronounce the Shire when its part of a word. Its shear.

But there's nothing funnier than listening to a yank pronounce the shire counties.

Any man who doesn't pronounce "decals" properly spends a night in the box.  Oh, and what's your dirt doing in the warden's hole?

Go to Boston, Mass. or even Maine you get a whole new way pronouncing things. I think it's the same all across this great country of ours in the USA.
