Thank you friends.

I got all the way to the table, hooked up an ready to go to sleep, then was told the donor lungs were not good.

The positive thing is I've been thorough it now and know what to expect, and I know I'm first on the list.

Krap, I'm so sorry to hear that Steve. I was really hoping you were making some progress here. Well, I guess you're no worse off now than you were before right?

I hope the donor's lungs went to help someone else and weren't wasted?

Sigh.

Thanks again my friends,
Now that I got some sleep I can expound a little more. The lungs are often not viable because that are so delicate and are subjected to the environment of outside air and contamination. I was on the operating table, ready to be put under when the Doctor’s assistant came in and gave me the news and showed me a picture of the lungs. He said the lungs were damaged either through the young man’s trauma or through the trauma team trying to save him and that if they put those lungs in I would be fighting the transplant and the lungs trying to heal. He said I was too well to try them. In other words, if I was going to die very soon myself, they would have gone ahead with the surgery.
The preparation took so long because they must coordinate all of the other recipients who are receiving heart, kidneys, liver and so on at the same time.
I was at the hospital for 20 hours, did not eat for 36 and only had 2 cups of ice for hydration during a 32-hour period. Needless to say, I was tired, hungry and thirsty. I came home and went straight to sleep.
I learned a lot through this and will be more prepared for the next time. I will keep you posted when they call for round 2. I have heard that some poor folks have gone through 5 dry runs. Indifferent

Keep faith my friend.  It is hard to get amped up and ready, only to be let down and have to start over again. We are all pulling for you and the family.

It will happen when the Master of us all decides the time is right.

Thanks again guys,

The people who I feel for is my brother who sat with me for 8 hours waiting for them to come get me and then another 2 waiting for me to be discharged. Then my wife who waited in Boise for the go, no go call and received the no go 4 hours before wheels up. She had to take the day and pack, get the plane tickets, wait all day, alone, think and just wanting to head down and be with me. I feel so bad for her, now she goes back to work like nothing happened until next time.

Me, I didn't have anything better to do except work on some builds. Next time I should bring a snap tite for the wait LOL.

I'm happy that while the donor lungs didn't work out, other recipients were able to receive their gift from a giving family. Unfortunately, the donor was a minor, so his family made the choice for donation.

Hang in there Steve. I went down that road 3 times before the right one. The first one went bad after 2 days and they had to go back in and get it out. Then the 2 false starts. I figure that the Man Upstairs was holding me for just the right one. Got it in '98 so this year will be 20 years for it. No problems except the slight case of diabetes caused by the anti-rejection drugs that they had me take for so long. Now they work better and don't make you take them as long and the diabetes doesn't come into the picture.

I keep thinking about the Star Trek picture when they came back to save the whales. Bones was walking down the hall of a hospital and saw a woman on a stretcher. He asked her what was wrong. She said she had kidney failure and was waiting to go on dialysis. He said "That's barbaric. Here, take this pill and you'll be fine in about 15 minutes". I would love to see a day like that for everyone with serious problems. Maybe some day.

Thanks Jim,

I just watched that movie 2 weeks ago. The last time I saw that scene it didn't really mean anything to me but I had the same thought when I saw it this time.

So the ship's surgeon is walking down the gun deck of Victory and sees a sailor gravely ill. He asks what's wrong, and the sailor says he has the winds.

"Bleed him".

Sorry mate, when one door closes another opens.

All will be well, as you mentioned, other recipents are alive due to hard decision of the family to donate.

All the very best.

From one spud to another,( Idahoans), hang in there. Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family in this difficult time.

I was on the family side with my father in 1987, it is tough. Didn't work out for my dad. Have " brother" from the club I used to ride with, he had a double lung transplant and is doing great.

Best of luck Steve and as I stated thoughts and prayers are with you.
