This sound slike a great project. According to the BBC it will be in cinema's next Tues but hopefully will be on TV in Nov.

I saw a video about this on YouTube the other day.  It was amazing.  The colorization is remarkable, but they (Weta Digital) also adjusted the frame rates to make people's movements look natural.

All those cameramen at the time were hand cranking the film, which is why so many old film looks fast and have a silent-film "jerkyness" to them.  So they re-timed everything and it's amazing how it suddenly feels "real," instead of just some old film.

That's amazing! If it's in the UK, we probably won't see it for a year or so, and then on Netflix, the History Channel or AHC.

It is set to be released in cinema's tomorrow along with screenings in schools and other venues. It will then been shown on the BBC at a later date, i would imagine next month. After that it should be avaliable on the BBC iplayer.

Very possably. I checked our local cinema's tonight and they are both fully booked for the screening tomorrow. Guess i'll have to wait until next month.

This sounds great. I, myself can't get enougth of WW I, with Robert Ryan narrating. I own the series on DVD.

There was a segment about this on the One Show last night, a BBC show that goes out every night. Jackson was talking about how it was done, i have a feeling the footage was from a BBC Documentery on how it was done which is being shown next month. jackson was saying that it was a lot more about the colourisation, there was also altering the speed as well as adding sound effects. Amazing work.

They had the historian Dan Snow on the show last night. He asked jackson, who is a big WW1 enthusiast, why he didn't make a movie about the great war seeing as he had everything he needed to do it. Jackson had said that the Great War was his passion and he would never make a movie on it, but he put more effort into this project than he did into any of the big blockbuster movies he made.

Its been announced that this is to be shown on BBC 2 at 9.30pm on the 11th Nov. Hopefully you guys will be able to catch it as well.

On BBC America all I see scheduled on the 11th are movies and Dr Who (the "new" one, season 11). Since it's showing over the pond then, we may be able to see it soon. That is a must see for sure.

I am guessing you normally get it after we do here. So hopefully it won't be long. If i remember right, on Nov 11th you observe vetrens day rather than Armistace day.

Yes sir, we do. All vets are honored, it's quite nice, and a good opportunity for a free meal at several restaurants and record some great movies.

It was commemorated as Armistace Day until WWII. Since WWII that date is now commemorated as Veterans Day. Since we have been engaged in a few more wars since then. Our Memorial Day in May, which has been observed since shortly after our Civil War of the 1860s, is an older commemoration. I hate using the word celebration for either holiday.

I do hope to catch that Peter Jackson film sometime. I am no WWI buff by any means. But the previews look incredible and it is a most important subject.

Watched it last night. The most amazing piece of television i have ever seen. If you get the chance, you can't miss this. For me, it was the voices that have been given to the men on the screen, it was so well dubbed and the forces were perfect, and with the vetrens talking over the top as well.

Capped off a very emotional day.

I'm very much looking forward to it. Even my brother, who knows little about any war subject, was aware of it and wanted to watch it. He was amazed that it was not showing here yesterday. The US did have very little envolvement in that war but the day was about the ending of WW1 as a whole. You chaps and the French carried the lions share of the victory.

Bobby has mentioned it is at the cinema over there on 17th Dec, so i would guess it would be on TV after that. I know its on BBC iPlayer until the end of this week.

I had already shead a few tears yesterday, but at the end of that, listening to the accounts of what happened when they got home, i was in floods of tears. Very moving. There is one American vet talking as well as Ozzies, Candians and so on.

Now about to watch a 30min programme about how they did it.

And the making of was really good. I knew jackson had a large collection of WW1 replica aircraft, but he also opened a museum and has a huge collection of WW! memrobilia including uniforms and guns. They used these to get the colours and the sounds effects. He is also a model builder and i have only just tonight put 2 and 2 together and realised he is the owner of Wingnut wings.

In the documentory he said that tehse guys spent 4 years fighting that war, the least he could do was take 4 years out from making movies and work on this.

     Thanks for the tip on the BBC presentation of Jacksons WW1 endeavor.  Anyone who catches a listing for it on this side of the Atlantic, please post it.

    I just caught a good bit of the 1919 movie of the Lost Battalion.   Many of the actual Vets were involved in the production. Quite a movie. It was mentioned in the commentary that it was filmed in the actual "pocket" the Battalion was trapped in.

It just seemed a bt of a coincedance. So i went to their site and in the About Us section, Peter is listed as the owner. I knew his film company was called Wingnut films, but it was only when i saw it last night that i woundered if there was a connection.

Just saw on the interweb that it will shown two nights, Dec 17 and 27 at cinemas in the US.

It looks like it's playing at all the AMC theaters here in the Columbus area on those dates. Now I have to figure out which day to take off to see it. My wife, daughter and I just watched the trailer and can't wait to see it. Beats anything Ted Turner ever did by a mile.

Not directly connected but on a similar theme, a charity in Canada has colourised 150 WW1 photos to be published in a book and also to tour around the country next year. Looking at the examples here, they have done a very nice job on these.
