The view from my bench. Beyond the treeline is Bass Straight. This is looking directly South. Six hundred klicks and slightly West from the treeline is Tasmania and beyond Tassie there is nothing but the Southern Ocean until you hit Antartica.

My response was like Toshi's as it looks more like a studio.  Lots of natural light, comfortable areas to do research, lots of shelves.  You have a very nice place to relax and be creative. 

I must say, as a ship modeler, what is the story behind the ship model in your picture?

Thanks Toshi. I have been very lucky. We used to live in a small timber cutters cottage some 400 k's from where we are now. In that tiny little house that was only two bedrooms I used to model out of a cupboard. I recieved a large compensation payout and we moved here and built a house that can accomodate our 5 grandkids and their friends, whilst giving Jill and I space. As for Mrs. Dodgy, she is the most awsome woman and in her I have a treasure that can never be replaced.

Ta Scott. The ship is an interesting story. Its HMS Vanguard, Nelson's flagship at the Battle of the Nile. I have always wanted one of these wooden warships, but did not think I had the skill, or the space to build one. A friend of mine loved to build them, but had run out of space in his home to house them. To alow himself to continue his hobby he offered to build me one if I purchased the kit. The price was half a dozen bottles of bourbon. What could I say, but yes please!

Beautiful model.  That was cheap, even at triple the "price".

BTW, I'd go through at least that much just doing the rigging.

That was a good deal for the both of you.  I have the same problem conerning space. I love to build them but no place to put them when finished.

I am surprised we do not have more posts here, especially from our new FSA friends. I am in a similar situation as Tojo with his basement. Except I am in the process of totally remodeling mine. So all of my wall shelves are down and everything is moved into the center of the basement in a rather disorganized organization. The hard foam insulation board is up and the new windows are in which does make a hugh difference in the tempreture.

I still have far to go on the remodel, but the kits are safe till its done, just a little here and there. While some are still in free standing shelves or hanging from the ceiling, much of it is in disarray at the moment. The stuff seen on the pool table is normally on shelves around the TV. Most everything hanging is 1/18. They were the series of pre-assembled aircraft but I reworked most of them to add significant detail and repaint in some cases. They will come down when the interior walls and ceiling are added, till then they are OK.

I find it very interesting just how all of us cleverly adapt our displays to the space available. Honestly, I see ideas on sites like this and use them for myself in my display options. So I am asking everyone to post their displays so I can use your ideas when rebuilding my basement into my man cave.

    For the Autos. How about Glass topped bi level tables?

 I did a coffee table once with the battle of Midway in it. The little planes hung from the glass! The Ships were on the ocean below.

 Set up your cabinets for the cars this way. Smallest scale in the middle. None above eye level. Run a shelf around the edge of the room at eye level for the larger cars. For the older( read dusty Bottom stuff) create a shelf unit of Oldies but Goodies!

     Gotta Ask, What scale is the XB-70?

Tank-Builder, thanks for the ideas, I may use them. 

The XB-70 is 1/72. It took some time to clean up the seam between the halves of the fuselage. The panel lines did not exist so I scribed some and others are fine pencil lines. It placed 2nd at a contest in the mid 90's but has been hanging there since around 2005. Show me your man cave....

TempestJohnny; I have been collecting some sort of cars since the mid 60's.

While my parents eventually tossed out my model builds from middle and high school after I joined the Army. I also lost a very large collection of the early Lindsey matchbox vehicles to my nephew. He ended up using it as his collection base and continues to collect them over the last 35 years, many worth hundreds of dollars now. What you see is what I've been able to keep since my military return in the late 80's. I suppose I've also given away around 50 cars or trucks over the last 18 years to kids who expressed interest or appreciation for that certian vehicle (trying to nurture the hobby). Most all of them in the glass cases are 1/18 die-cast. I gut and rebuild/repaint them with as much detail as I can put in them.

Brandon, I agree with what you said above about Toshi. He was someone very special. I too wish he was still here building models with Ezra.
