Similar size but heavier, faster & similar age to the 707.

This aircraft entered full production & was made in various versions, it also flew for a display team.

Smaller, faster & newer than the Ar 232.

Slightly smaller, just faster & no newer than the Sea Vixen.

I suspect that F-8 may already know the answer............................

More?

One example of this aircraft was lost in a fatal & very public accident which resulted in a temporary grounding?

The 12 designs were submitted by 6 companies, this aircraft resulting from an offer of 6 designs made by one of these companies.

One  unusual feature of the landing gear was to reduce load on landing.

This aircraft had a roll rate far in excess of any of modern aircraft in a similar role.

Scorpiomikey

When you say unique undercarriage, do you mean unique for its time? Or unique even by modern standards?

The landing gear appeared little different from any other landing gear of the time, but both front & rear had functions / features that were not that normal - these functions wern't evolutionary & didn't become mainstream.

One of these "functions" was something that could be & was "show-boated".

Not the 232, from what i see it was chosen from only 2 designs, not the 12 that he asked for.

How about the Arado Ar-232, it had a very innovative landing gear. And multiple configurations.

PhilB

Hmmm... Milairjunkie, was your correct answer the result of research or did my subtle clues of "tired" and "rim" give the game away :-))

It's wasn't the subtle clues - I'm a bit of a thicket at picking these up - as my wife would testify to in a nanosecond! For some reason when I first read the question I thought Goodyear & the rotating thing narrowed it down in my head to a engine or tyre manufacturer.......

This aircraft was chosen from 12 designs, was very advanced for it time & looked somewhat futuristic, it's landing gear both front & rear were quite unique & balsa was featured in it's construction.

The aircraft handled very well & was a joy to fly on a good day?

The Firestone 45 / XR-9, which was developed by G&A Aircraft?

45B not built

45C not built

45Cr 1 prototype

45D 1 prototype

Firestone make plenty of rotating things......

Whilst the company which took over the designs still exists and is known throughout the world in its own field, the company it bought out with the designs and the subsidiary it set up to produce helicopters are very obscure, you might say on the rim of aviation history.

I want to say the Hughes XH-17 but im pretty sure im way off the mark there.

Originally designed by Kellet, Hughes bought the designs and scavenged off other aircraft to build it.

Hughes Helicopters are still going, But Hughes Aviation went defunct a little while ago.

This is even more of a stab in dark than the last one;

The Weir / Cierva / Saunder Roe W6 / W.11 / W.11T / W12 Air Horse tri-rotor?

I really thought you'd cracked my clue but you've hit on the wrong type of rotating things!

I'm thinking the Bendix Models G, K, L & J from Bendix Helicopters / Helicopters Inc?

Bendix being of starter motor, brake & washing machine (in name only) fame.

Are the companies involved connected to a variety of rotating things outwith the aeronautical industry?

We are looking for the helicopter type (sub types would earn bonus points) and the two companies involved

So are we looking for the manufacturers or the aircraft?

This time we are looking for a helicopter.  Four versions were proposed, but only two were built - neither getting beyond one example .

The manufacturer was purchased before the first example flew, by a company well known in a field other than aircraft but it got tired of the project and shut down its aircraft plant in 1946

Yes, The Diamond DA42.

A composite twin, built in Austria, running on Diesel & used by both civil & military operators - & a right little gem!

Aeronautics Defense Systems of Israel convert the DA42 into the Dominator UAV, in 2010 an agreement was signed with Boeing to market the Dominator internationally.
