A strange hobby for a girl
Posted by Elizabeth Jane on Wednesday, January 5, 2011 9:20 PM

Hello everyone.

I guess I won't find too many girls here but I started modelling thanks to my dad's lack of interest in the hobby.

20 year ago my dad was given a Revell model truck (Peterbilt Black Widow 1:25) that he started by building the chassis and then it got put away until my brother found it one day and took it for his son. It was too complicated for my nephew so it got returned.

It was in a bad state when I opened the box. The chassis had a terrible twist in it, the wheels had been glued solid and then snapped off, the steering had been built backwards, the doors had been glued on and then snapped off and the glass had been glued in and covered with fingerprints of glue. To make matters worse, two wheels were missing along with a few other parts and it still wasn't painted.

As I don't like being beating so I decided to give it a go anyway. I took over my dad's study room for two month and started repairing the model. I even got my dad to go shopping with me for everything I would need and he showed me how to spray paint.

I am really pleased with how it turned out but it does still have a few faults like the wheels wobble a bit because I had to make new pins for them and the chassis still has a slight twist in it but for my first model I think I did quite well. As soon as I work out how to post pictures on here I will.

Elizabeth.

It's always nice to see some ladies here. There used to be a lass that modeled armor. I've also seen one that built some great jet aircraft. There has even been a Powderpuff Groupbuild.

Look forward to see your work.

Hello everyone.

Welcome Elizabeth!  You are correct that the majority that post here are males.  But ther are some female modelers that are active.  One that comes to mind is CallSignOWL.  Sounds like you're off to a good start.  Looking forwards to seeing your Peterbilt.

Hi Elizabeth and welcome to the forum and hobby. It's amazing what something your dad showed you all those years ago had a lasting effect. Thats how it happened for me. A light globe lit in my brain when i was 35 and haven't looked back since.

Happy modeling - Leo

Elizabeth Jane,

Welcome to the FSM modeling forums!Toast

Tackling a warped glue bomb of a model as a first build is a daunting task to say the least. Most experienced modelers here would keep the Peterbilt for salvaging bits for scratch built details on other models. Your determination to rebuild the kit is admirable and further more will accelerate your skills as a true modeler.

To post pictures you need to join a third party photograph host like Photobucket. Once they are up loaded there you simply copy the IMG code and paste here.

Once you decide to treat yourself to a new kit and what subject it will be post a thread asking which model kit is worth buying. It saves time & money as someone here has built any kit or subject in question and will give honest opinions as to its quality.

Elizbeth: I did some of thoes kits myself Peter Built Cab Over and the Peter Built Long Nose the frames were twisted on them also. If this happenes to you again try putting the frames in hot water until plastic softens a little. Then lay a little weight on frame till it gets cold sometimes this will straighten frame, if it's not twisted to bad. And welcom to the forum.               Welcome Sign      Bow Down    ACESES5

Elizabeth, welcome to the forum and to the hobby.  I don't find it at all strange that a "girl" should be interested in the scale modeling hobby.  My grandson, who is 7, has an interest in our hobby and I do wish his sister, who is 9, would develop an interest.  But, growing up to fast, she is now interested in make up, Justin Biber (whoever the heck that is) and "girly" things.  Are you only interested in things with wheels, or do you have an interest in the true black art - ships?  If you think that might be to your taste there are some great things happening right now in ship modeling.

Welcome to the forum.

My Mom used to build models and is the one that got me into building when I was young and for a short time one of my step sisters was modeling as well.

I've seen a number of videos on youtube with girls doing tutorials on building kits.

It's not such a strange hobby for a girl.  My 13 year old Daughter started a couple of years ago.  She was watching me build an old Titanic Model, and asked to help and that was it.  After that she helped me with about a dozen kits.  Now she does her own.  For Xmas we got her a 1/32 Bell Xi rocketplane, and a 1/48 combo set of the  U2 and SR71 by Testors.  Plus if any kits I do don't come out perfect, I give them to her so she can practice techniques that I am teaching her.

Oh.  To post an image you need an offsite storage site like Photobucket.  You get an account and upload to Photobucket (It's free), then use the direct link they give you to the image here.  Just click the little icon that looks like a film strip and paste the direct link from photobucket or another hosting service in the space provided.

Hope this helps

Rich

Hello Elizabeth and welcome.

Strange, no but rare to see many women here.

My daughter used to hang around my work bench but never tried a model.

My wife did a snap together VW New Beetle to match her real car a couple of years ago.

Welcome again and have fun!

WHY?? My daughters built models until they got into the MILITARY. I for one like to see the gentler ones being interested in our hobby. My wife, before health derailed her, was starting to build ships. My cousin who to look at her you wouldn,t think so( very properly feminine) ,is one heck of an armor builder. She likes softskins and if there,s no kit she scratchbuilds them. She does not go to model shows or contests.I asked her why, "CUZ, you know I build to suit me,my work would never even place with all their penchant for accuracy." I guess she has a point. I don,t enter contests anymore because of the all pervasive it aint right if it has no equal in the research! mentality. I build for me ,but , I welcome any and all ladies to our very interesting , rewarding and enlightening hobby.I don,t care what you build ,just build it ladies!!! tankerbuilder

Hey ,BOB ,why is building a ship a black art?? It is actually more like a mysterious venture into the unknown. I really do understand why you said that though. There are many modelers out there that DO think what we do is a black art.Just because it MAY come to a point on both ends doesn,t mean it,s strange. RIGHT?? Well after looking at some of the ships over the years maybe it is a black art .Oh well, so be it.     tankerbuilder

Welcome Aboard!!

My wife tried her hand at it and got frustrated when I tried to give her pointers.  So I just shut my mouth and let her go.  I give you a BIG HIGH 5 for taking over an already partially built model.  Like others have said, I dont think I would try that one either.

There is one I will work on tho.  My son and I worked on a 3 ft destroyer that we made radio controlled.  I gotta fix that one up again and surprise some people at the summer cottage again.

You will find some very helpful threads on the site as well as some off the wall also.  Feel free to comment and hopefully you have a good sense of humor.  Take what Manny says with a fine grain of salt.  (JK, Manny!)

Send pics when you can!!!  I know we all would like to see before and after!
