subfixer

He was living in the Omaha, Nebraska, area.

Actually, I believe it was Ames, IA. (unless he moved).

It was Ames, Iowa.  Hans got flooded out a couple of years ago and then a$$hole looters cleaned out his stash, among other valuables.  I sent him a couple of kits to get his stash started again.  Hope he is ok and will grace these pages again soon.

That sounds like the weather related mishap I originally posted about. Thanks for the memory jog.

Mike is a nice guy.  Despite being wheelchair bound, he doesnt seem to let it slow him down and takes it all in his stride.  He always brightened up these pages and had some memorable spats with a couple of loudmouths over the years.

To gather all of the information here in one spot( and somebody correct me if I get anything wrong). We've got ourselves a Mike Thompson who is wheel chair bound, a member of the CAF and last place of residence was in Arnes, Iowa. I'd say that's enough to get started with a contact of some sort. The next step is to go somewhere with this information. I could try to contact the CAF and see if there's a guy on the books that fits this description. Yays or nays?

I agree.  Poirot would definitely find him but Hans doesn't really seem like a "Poirot" kind of guy.  Better send out Columbo instead.  Poirot seems more like a well polished "Tamiya" kind of guy.  Columbo is more of a "Monogram" kind of guy:  Sort of rough around the edges but still gets the job done.

But seriously, I've always enjoyed Hans' builds and comments.  It seems like there are so very few of us Revell/Monogram fans left out there.  I wish he'd come back to us.  I hope his absence from the forum isn't an indication that his life has taken a downturn.  I hope he's doing alright.

echolmberg:

I see your point about Columbo vs. Poirot.

Regarding Hans' posts: I thoroughly enjoyed Hans' builds as both informative and entertaining.

Oh, there's just one more thing..........Whistling

As Hans also commented that he enjoyed building Eduard Weekend kits, I'm thinking that perhaps he is much more polished underneath than he wanted to let on......Hmm

I think the concern about Mike is well-intended, but you also might want to consider the possiblity that he doesn't want to be "found".

If someone actually knows him personally and wants to check up on him out of concern, that's one thing.

But invading someone's privacy by tracking him down through the Internet borders on stalking in my book.

As a fellow Monogram-holic I enjoyed his participation here on the forum, and I hope he is well.  At the same time no one's obligated to be here and he chooses not to be, then I respect that.

Ditto  Exactly.  As I said, I'd rather he comes back to us as opposed to getting dragged back to us kicking and screaming.

I'm getting this sudden image in my head of Hans quoting Al Paccino from The Godfather movie;  "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in."

No way a person like Hans would up and leave here, unless like some people suggested, that he lost internet or is in poor health. I can assume that he no longer responds to PM's, though?

Honestly your right Mark. The more I thought about this the more "out there" it seemed. If I were to leave this place or any place for that matter and not return then it would probably be due to the fact that I did not want to be  there in the first place. Better to leave well enough alone. Point well taken there bud.

I hope not.
It always seemed to me that Hans was a bit young to be building that great, heavenly Revelogram stash in the sky.Angel

Well we do know that he had one and was up for a second hip replacement, IIRC. His wheelchair situation was due to that, but I do not recall it being permanent. He was working for a guy who flips houses, and was also doing bail enforcement work. Add to that being husband, dad to some adult kids, etc. and he has a very busy schedule. While anyone of us can pass on at the blink of an eye due to circumstances beyond our control (auto collisions are one of THE leading causes of death here in the USA), I dont recall his health being anywhere near as bad as him knocking at heavens door (as if they will let such a crnaky guy in). Just just continue to keep his status here as MIA. people do occasinally pop in and out of here after extended absences.

Reasoned, drive by his place slowly while waving a Monogram kit out your window.  That should draw him out like deer to a salt lick.  Either that or, with your windows rolled down, loudly sing the praises of after-market resin parts.

Or you can fly a Tamiya/Hasegawa banner out the back of your vehicle as you drive back and forth in front of the property. Wait for the bull to come charging out.

All the concern about "invading the privacy" of Hans is BS. If someone were to contact him out of concern I'd think he'd be flattered. I would. At that time the man can inform that he wants to be left alone, if that were the case, and that would be it. Leave the man alone. Otherwise, he could inform with whatever the situation is should he so choose.

I'm not for going up and knocking on the man's door unless I knew him well enough, which I don't. But an email or phone call would not be out of line, IMHO. How else is one supposed to contact old friends? People do it on facebook millions of times a day and we don't hear screams of privacy invasion. It's called "friending" people.
