Karl :

The few times I have been a vendor at shows I usually mark up what I have five to ten bucks .I am not trying to make a small fortune .

But I have seen folks with a $100.00 on a kit I was selling for say $ 20.00 . I also went home each time with an empty van where-as some of those guys spent two or three hours re-packing their trailers    They brought so much  . I believe in covering expenses , But not to gouge fellow modelers .I may do it again this year to cull down my stash .

Besides I can't take it with me now , can I ?   T.B.          P.S. I have an original first Re- Release of the " Revell " 1/200 scale , North Cormorant Offshore oil rig . I forgot I even had it because of moving to smaller quarters .Squadron is asking $135.96 - Down from $196.95 . Sheesh , I only paid $39.95 for mine . Prices quoted are from the Squadron catalogue I received today .

I have also been known to discount kits that I have that have been re-released within a year  Of me acquiring them . I have a LOT of cars . Ships are NOT for sale yet  ! Planes Not to many . Armor very little . A good many have been opened and checked and some started ( I/E mold lines removed as is flash .Other than that they are complete . ) Those are usually one or two bucks off retail .

I have never appreciated folks who sell so high I have to walk by .That is obscene in my mind .

Since attending local IPMS contest / swap meets,  I have seen the number of dealers decrease.
It seems the ones who do not return are those who did not sell much due to high prices.
I would not be surprised if the IPMS National becomes the only show attended by medium to large dealers due to number of visitors.

A remake of the SST. The one from Revell goes for $150+

Crikey, it was around $42 when Revell Germany reissued it!  I picked one up in Japan for about that price, but the parts were really warped.  Yeah, a new kit with modern tooling and non-warped parts would be nice.

I know they'd be large; however, I think it would be nice to find some 1/72 civil airliners like the 707, 737, 727, A320, etc.

Hi ;

I know of at least seven and possibly more in 1/250 .Yes they are paper , but that does not for one minute detract from what the finished model looks like ! .

+1

Fantastic Plastic had a resin one in 1/144 scale, but it's no longer listed on their site.  OOP maybe?  An injected plastic one would be awesome and more widely available.

Anything from Phantom Menace , especially the Trade Federation ships and armor in something bigger than 1/72. I'd like to see the C-9979 done by Fine molds or even amt. 1/48 scale pod racers would be a lot of fun. I'd also  like to build a miniature battle droid army, but i think im pushing it there. ;)

Shaun,

FYI, Fine Molds lost the license for SW stuff.  Bandai has it now.  I believe Revell Germany still has theirs.

Thanks Watchman. That is news to me, and a little bit of a shock. Bandai did alot of the Gundam stuff.

I'll have to go check out Rev Germany and see what they're making.

Revell now have the Fine Molds molds and I believe will be releasing some items this year. That will be a relief as the FM kits are superb and hopefully under Revell they will be cheaper. I have been wanting the FM 72nd falcon for a while, hopefully now I can get it.

Bandai has already been churning them out.  Take a look at the HLJ website.

I think "lost" is a bit misleading when I mentioned Fine Molds and the license.  I'm not sure what happened.  Maybe the license expired, or they didn't renew.

My understanding is that Fine Molds lost the licence when Disney took over. I guess FM wasn't big enough for Disney to pay the sort of bucks they wanted.

I don't have any special insights into the legalities and workings of the plastic kit market, but I have the impression that in recent years the concept of licensed merchandise (from movie companies, corporations, etc.) has been severely curtailed.

It used to be that when you bought a B-17 kit, the box would say "Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress." Nowadays it just says "B-17 Flying Fortress." The corporations can't claim copyright on military hardware, but they can claim it on their names and trademarks.

A few years back, Chrysler withdrew the licensing right to the word "Jeep." Since then the kit manufacturers have come up with all sorts of labels for Jeep kits.

I can't remember the last time a model company issued a licensed ship kit associated with a movie. In the late fifties, Revell reissued its HMS Bounty with photos of Marlon Brando and Trevor Howard on the box. That sort of thing just doesn't happen any more. (In a way it's a shame. Seems like the Orca, from "Jaws," or the Andrea Gale, from "The Perfect Storm," or any of several other vessels connected with movies might draw some young people into the hobby.) Revell did reissue its ancient "Captain Hook's Pirate Ship" with the label "Caribbean Pirate Ship" on the box. Note how carefully it avoided the phrase "Pirates of the Caribbean," and any mention of Disney.

There was a big fuss about this topic not too long ago in the model railroad world. The various prototype railroads were refusing to license models with their names on them. As I understand it, that one was worked out in the courts, so model railroaders can still buy stuff with "Santa Fe" or "Union Pacific" on it.

An irony: it's perfectly ok for a model company to sell a "Messerschmitt BBF-109" kit, or a "Mitsubishi Zero" kit, in the U.S. - but not a "Boeing B-17." Oh, well; I guess this is the sort of thing that makes lawyers rich.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

I'd like to see some modern motocross bikes and sports bikes, but I believe the die cast manufacturers have the rights to them. With a few exceptions, most of the diecast stuff is rubbish and not very well detailed though. Minichamps is about the best but they don't make dirt bikes.

1/48 Curtiss XF15C-2 "Stingaree",  1/48 F2H-2/2P/2N "Banshee", 1/48 Curtiss SOC "Seagull", 1/48 PB4Y-2 "Privateer".  Oh, and reasonably priced(< $50) would be nice!

You will only see "reasonably priced" if Revell or Airfix tackle the kit. Otherwise, go see the loan officer at your local bank ;)

There was a big fuss about this topic not too long ago in the model railroad world. The various prototype railroads were refusing to license models with their names on them. As I understand it, that one was worked out in the courts, so model railroaders can still buy stuff with "Santa Fe" or "Union Pacific" on it.

In fact it was several layers deeper than that and frankly kind of evil.

First, the argument on the railroad company side was that a model with their name on it would risk devaluation of the "brand", as railheads do like the rest of us and add things like graffiti and hobos to their models.

But the truly unfair part, which made it a clear shakedown, was that the current mega conglomerate railroads claimed the rights to the long lost "fallen flags" that had gone up their financial vacuum cleaners.

So for instance the CSX (one of four railroads left in the country) controlled the rights to the Chessie System (think cat logo) which gave them the Chesapeake and Ohio, which in turn led to the Baltimore and Ohio, the Reading, the Jersey Central, and the Western Maryland. By way of the Seaboard System the Seaboard Airline, the Louisville and Nashville, the Clinchfield and the Atlantic Coast Line. And the good old Chicago South Shore Interurban is in there some where.

And don't even get me started on the Western railroads.

But railroad modelers are a pretty provincial lot. This really hurt.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

...1/48 Curtiss SOC "Seagull"...

If I'm not mistaken, Mike West has produced a Seagull kit in his Lone Star Models line, if  you're looking to build one now.

There was also a vacuform, which you can still find on eBay from time to time.

But I'm with you on that one, too.
