Desert Shield/Desert Storm GB Feeler
Posted by stikpusher on Friday, June 19, 2015 4:43 PM

This August will mark the 25th anniversary of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and the subsequent Desert Shield build up and Desert Storm campaign of January thru March 1991. Would anybody be interested in a Group Build to commemorate this event?

I'd consider the Maid of Moray, which is kicking around in the stash. Would have to resist the $ 300.00 or so AM stuff available though...

What would be the allowable subject matter, Stik?

Let's keep it simple DD ;) Land, Sea, or Air subjects involved in Theater for Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm/Granby/Dauget, etc. Coalition or Iraqi. Yeah, it came to me on my bike ride today... 25 years. Pink was oh so right about time.

GM, Maid of Moray? Please elaborate...

OK, we have three with GM, DD, and myself, we need several more if we are gonna pull this off. Come on folks.

I'd be game. Been wanting incentive to try a fighter jet of some sort. Something US, launched from a carrier probably. Being my first jet in xx yrs, will probably have a ton of questions along the way.

Regarding DD's comment, sitting her thinking I was 33 when the operation started? No way. This is really quite shocking.

edit: wait, we had an airbase in Saudi Arabia, right?

We had access to airbases in Saudi. Prior to Desert Shield there was no US presence in Saudi.

I'd be in for that, maybe do a couple crossovers if possible.

Lord, what an ugly beast!

You clearly haven't been to Scotland Wink

Pity I don't have anything in the stash for this. I handed my papers into the careers office the day Saddam went into Kuwait. I was then in training when it kicked off. We were on exercises and the instructors brought out a radio so we could hear the BBC news reports of the first air strikes. It was a bit tense as a few of the guys in the platoon thought they would be going straight out there and a couple of guys who had been back squadded through injury had a couple of mates they had been in training with killed out there.

I might have to see what I can come up with. I am cutting down on GB's, but I would certainly like to mark this event.

Greg, supposedly Desert Shield was the basis for the beginnings of Al Qaeda. Bin Laden wanted to lead forces in guerrilla warfare against the Iraqis to toss them out of Kuwait as he had done in Afghanistan against the Soviets. He was offended that US forces were allowed entry into Saudi and had a falling out with the monarchy at that time.

JE, yes, of course crossovers will be allowed.

Bish, I was off active duty by then, and in the Guard here. I got called up and demobilized due to paperwork screw ups due to my transfer from one unit to another, but never deployed for that one.

For those interested and thinking of building an aircraft, this site is pretty comprehensive on aircraft used.

I might learn something if this GB. pans out  Geeked

Stik, looks like your hotlink in your post above got messed up.

I was kinda thinking of an F-4 Phantom Wild Weasel I acquired a month or so ago, but it has a special reserve unit retirement scheme that I like, and don't reckon that would be appropriate for this. No worries, I will find something.

I take it you have the new Revell 1/32 Weasel kit? That kit would work, but would need different markings. Either the 35th FW out of George AFB, or the 52nd FW from Spangdahlem.

And learning is usually a good thing ;)

Stik, I was having a look around to see what's kits catch my eye. At first I thought an armour build. I don't want to do a warrior as I would like to do one of those in Telic rather than Granby, so I figured a Chally would be nice. I found a review of the 1992 Tamiya kit with Gulf markings. The guy was trying to work out where the stowage was so he checked on here and posted a couple of comments from a couple of shady characters.

modelkitsreview.com/tamiya-challenger

After that, I decided to find a list of what the Brits used out there and spotted the Buccaneer. Theres an Airfix that would work for that, so currently I am torn between the two but leaning towards the aircraft.

You assume correctly, young wise one. There was a thread here about the 1/32nd beastie being on sale at Hobby Lobby, and in a rare moment of weakness I ran out and procured one. Surprise

Just went through my stash to see what I have that would qualify, and was surprised to find that I have 16 kits that would be candidates. They are:

1/48th Scale:

Tamiya A-10

Academy F-16A/C

Academy CH-46D

Academy CH-46E

Academy MH-53E

ProModeler F-117A

Academy Hughes 500D

Academy AH-64 Apache Longbow

Monogram AV-8B Harrier II

Hasegawa F-16A

Kitty Hawk Jaguar T.2/T.4

Hasegawa A-7E Corsair II

1/32nd Scale:

Academy F-16CG/CJ

Kitty Hawk OV-10D Bronco

1/35th Scale:

MRC AH-1T/AH-1W

1/144th Scale:

Revell of Germany Boeing E-4B Command Post

Of course, with my background, I might just hafta build a Marine aircraft, so that should narrow it down a bit.

When do you need a definite decision on what we're building, Stik?

Well DD, we need to get enough folks here committed to do this first. It sounds like it is slowly gathering momentum.

B1, I'm with you and a have large number of kits in my stash that will work.

Nice purchase Greg. I also have that kit, and will be building it in that ID Guard Weasel unit markings. They were the last US unit to fly the Phantom in combat.

Stik, if you need any pictures of the Idaho Weasel, let me know, I'm only a few minutes from Gowen Field and have access to the base.  They have the Weasel and others on static display.

JE, thanks for the offer. When I received the kit I did a bunch of image searching and found some good stuff. But if I run into a question mark area, I will take you up on your fine offer.

speedhunter graphics to the rescue. I believe they have a 32nd sheet of weasels. If not exactly correct markings you could sure piece together some.

Hmmm , I was thinking a recce Phantom but after looking at Devil Dogs list I might snatch up an A-7...

I didn't realise that, and it just makes the retirement markings more appealing  to me.

Nathan, thanks for that info. I hadn't heard of that decal supplier. Always good to become familiar with another aftermarket source!

I think I'll not use the f-4 kit I mentioned for this GB should it come to be, though, as I like the markings supplied with the kit.

I'll do a little research and see if I can find the name of that field. If I remember correctly, it was named after one of the Royal Saudi princes. And I should state that it was a soccer stadium, not just a plain old run-of-the-mill soccer field.
