You'll be surprised, Jun!

The BAC 'elders' are having a hard time winning in our internal contest these days! New members such as mang ernie, super mario and fritz which the club has labeled as 'the emerging superpowers' are turning out great models! Bow [bow]

In our last internal contest 'Enter the British' held last March, 50% of the total awards were won by these 'superpowers'! Yeah!! [yeah] Check out pictures of these models in our web and you'll agree with me. Approve [^]

So, this Sunday? Who will win??

Abangan! Laugh [(-D]

I can't wait... Wink [;)]

But really, in IPMS-Manila also, the new guys take the cake over the more "experienced" (not old, mind you) ones. During the first internal competiton we had, the youngest member (I think Jobet is bout 14) took the better of most of the older guys in the fixed wing category. Even Mike Jorge, a modeler who's been out of it for over 20 years won first in the 1/72 armor category. He bested several guys that were "real" armor guys (parang si Albert ba). Anyway, I guess it's time for the new guys t come in and show their stuff. During the beginning, there were Bert and Tiggy, etal... Then came our era where you, Albert, Mel, Ping, Hermie, Desi and the others were lauded as the gurus... Now, I guess it's time to pass the baton over to the younger guys.

Why do I suddenly feel OLD...[:0]

But seriously, our clubs has never really been for us. They have and I guess must always be for the future... lest the club dies.

Hey there Mauser! Welcome!

Would you by any chance be 14 years old and who built a spectacular Panther? Glad to have you aboard, matey.

sigman

let me get this, in this forum we should not dicuss problems that affects the average modeller. who's helping who? who will they ask?
when an everyday problem in this hobby becomes an issue, forums such as this will always be in the forefront why? because you guys claim to know the hobby you offer your techniques and your sources. so, modellers such as me will always ask you about tips, the best kits for the best price, events and yes, problems with hobby shops! Point well taken Sigman... point well taken.

Let this message of Sigman be a wakeup call to all. I've been to many message boards and have moderated a few. There are times when "misunderstandings" and "misinterpretations" creep into the picture.

Remember, in this forum, we are only able to use 14% of our inherent capabilities to communicate. We can't see the other's "body language" nor can we hear the tones of their voices. It's very easy to misconstrue or misinterpret one's meaning this way.

hey jun

i see that you guys haven't got the point yet. so, i'll put this in the most simplest terms which i hope gets through:

1. i have a small budget, and i really wanted to buy this particular kit and two hobby shops in equal distance have it, store #1 the price is higher, store #2 is lower. where will i buy the kit from?

2. i'm looking for a special kit and yes, there are two hobby shops again the 1st one has salespeople who knows the line who can sourse the kit or offer an alternative the other store has salespoeple who only knows the store's inventory and the daily sales report, where will i go to?

3. and then there's this forum with regulars posted who knows the best techniques, the best kits and maybe the whole hobby business. and then there's this modeller who wants to improve his skills and source new kits and problems with hobby shops where will he post his questions?

See Beth? Your reply is an exact example of what I was saying. My intentions were misunderstood. Why? Simply because all that is seen are the words.

Okay, let me explain what I meant. I spoke to them simply because I've seen this occasion happen many times before - a time where two or more people start by asking a simple question, which was answered but unfortunately misunderstood by the receiving party. My point is just that we should be prudent in choosing the words we say in this forum. That is what you were trying to say, Sigman, right?

Anyway, the issue of STC being the way it is is known by most modelers who frequent the shops. I for one have always been a vicitim to it. Actually, it has happened to me at Lil's and JMN's. The common denominator here is this... once the owner isn't there, the store clerks who are left are not given the authority to give discounts to the customers. Worse is the fact that the salesclerks probably get "chewed out" if they make a mistake in dealing with the customer or saying something they shouldn't. That is why you'll notice that they are so scarce with the information they give. Try talking to Natalie of JMN or Shakespeare of Lil's or even Winston of STC. You'll get the customer service we really deserve. Why? Simply because they have the "authority" to talk abut it.

It's something all storeowners should look at. Empowering your salesclerks should be a given in the business you're in. More important than that, training them be real sales personnel rather than just be "order-takers" will make the store more "friendly" to both the newbies in the hobby as well as the more experienced modelers.

I do hope the hobby stores eventually mature to this level. But until then, I guess we just have to "work with what we have" - like we always do whenever we're stuck with a situation with our builds, di ba? That's what modelers are good at. Wink [;)]

I hope this clears up the impasse I perceive is starting to brew. Big Smile [:D]

Sure looking forward to coming here more often.

i have always bought my gunze paints, thinners and surfacers at STC. also some modeling references, tools and stuff. even kits that are not available at other hobby shops. and i have been ASKING KINDLY if i can get a discount. i dont expect a hefty discount everytime i purchase an item or two. a few pesos off would be nice once in a while.

but the answer always seems to be 'sir, fix price'. Sad [:(]

i guess i just dont deserve to be given a discount and i dont know why. Ashamed [*^_^*]

maybe because i'm not a friend of the owner? Confused [%-)]

just a thought... Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Guys...

I buy kits everywhere. As in everywhere. Name it, I've been there. (Even from Dau, Pampanga when kits were sold at the PX). I don't know anyone personally. I got acquainted with Shakespeare, Winston and Roel once or twice. I know Natalie. But I never get a discount. Minsan, I kid about getting one. But yes, I get that answer "Fixed na yan sir". Minsan, I'm lucky. I get 5% or more. Depending on the luck of that day. Discount or not, if I get the kit I want, I'm happy.

Unless you buy say.....10 kits in one sitting ( I know a few) or you are really a friend of the owner, you can ask for a discount (or volume discount). If I don't get one, I'm either justing paying for that kit or leaving the shop without a kit. Nothing personal.

We must also remember that some of the owners of some shops are also EXCLUSIVE DISTRIBUTORS. Some are IMPORTERS. So the exclusive distributors often gets to sell at the best price. The others who buy from him will sell at a higher price (like Rico said - PATONG). It's a fact of ANY business. The Importers at the mean time can sell at a competitive price to be able to sway the market towards him and get some profit from his sale.

Wanna get it cheaper? Get it from Ebay or go to Hong Kong. It's the only way to get kits cheaper with this dying economy. Everybody has to earn a living. especially now that politician crave for Nissan Patrols and Land Cruisers. Now they're the one who should be crucified.

li22beth, I'm ditto with sm. you misunderstood me. please, please, please read again my quote and you can see that what i just "advise" to both of them is to "pipe down" or in english to cool down since the trend of their replies is going to be a heated argument or as others might say a "healthy discussion". I was really shocked when I read your post as if I offended you or something. i didn't imply about "what hobby shop" or "where can you ask", but everyone should consider on how and what kind of post that one should consider since this thread involve a lot of members. as you can notice, i seldom use a capital word since it implies like shouting or have an offensive meaning.

Bigman, Jun,

There was one time a new member of our club called me asking for tips. We spent about 30 minutes talking and he agreed to go to my house and bring his work. Sabi niya, he is only about 2 years on the hobby.

When I saw his Sherman ang Panzer...HUAAAAH!!!! Nagulat ako. Magaling na mag-dry brush and weathering! You'd be surprised with modelers these days. Yan ang maganda kapag maraming information sa net or thru magazine. Ano pa kaya kung may nagtutura sa club diba.

Well said noel. i am concern right now about the monthly increase on the price of gasoline and lpg since it will create all the increase of prices of all the commodities in the market. btw, the only thing right now that can ease my mind about our economy and the price increase, is that i bought a lot of kits b4 which i decided to build so that i don't have the time to watch the news and worry.

also, do anybody knew if there is a stock of a star wars millenium falcon made by mpc?

Shops
Posted by noel_carpio on Friday, May 28, 2004 8:36 PM
I recall my experience buying from a shop in New Jersey named AAA Trains and Hobbies. When I asked for Humbrol enamel thinner, the guy tending the shelf (not the owner) asked - "How many mL sir?". I just said "the biggest one". Then I said, "I need the best Decal Solution-what would you recommend?". He said, "Give me a sec". Then in a short while he came to me with three variants. He said "Let's ask the others which of these are the best sir". We both went to the cashiers. The Cashiers said "Most of the customers go for solvaset. But we recommend the micro-sol for the beginners." I said, "Give me 2 of those solvaset". He said, "Anything else sir?". I said "No thanks" (with a smile).

So what's my point? Owners must orient their people well. Nakakainis kasi when we go to ANY shop and ask for a specific model or paint. Then they look back at us with that "Who're-you-talking-to- look". I wouldn't mind not having a discount basta may naaasahan lang na mapagtanungan sa shop. Because here, if you don't know this hobby well enough, you go into a shop as if you are blind. Buti lang sana if the owners are always there to attend to you - pero hindi.

So guys, lets help each other bring to our dealers our CONSTRUCTIVE complaints so they will be given a chance to improve their services. Let's do away with the "personal" stuff for now and get back to modeling.

Ive been building and, naturally, buying model kits since 1983 (I started young, hehehe). STC (it wasnt known then as such) was one of the hobby shops I went to. All that time the only discount I could remember was P3 slashed off from the price of a Hasegawa F-4K/M. No, I didnt make a mistake. Three pesos. But Im not complaining.

Slowly, over the years, I decided not to buy from STC entirely. Im not a rich man, but to me the discount is only secondary. Customer service is the prime reason. Its not very good. And to me this is important.

I have to disagree with some of the posts made apparently in defense of the store. Yes, the salesclerks are not authorized to give discounts, but is the store owner authorized to mistreat customers? Ever heard of stories where customers are told "di naman pala bibili, eh"? Well, this author was one of those on the receiving end.

Beth is right. We should talk about these things. Its called "Consumer Rights." If people have gripes about a merchant, he or she has every right to complain. The fact that there are only a few stores in the country does not mean we have to learn to live with the merchant's character; its just so sad. We have free enterprise. And the customer is always right.

Shrikes,

Will I be seeing your Sabre? Ill tell you stories about the wargames, man. That was a blast! Hehehe!

Lipton,

Sayang naman di matatapos entry mo? Baka pwede humabol? See you tomorrow.

Jun,

Naah. Weve already handed a lot of models and other stuff to the AFP Museum. Weve also built kits for the Aif Force Museum and even the NAIA (seen at the Departure Area of Terminal 2, between the domestic and international wings). At any rate, we maintain communications with the staff and we'd be more than happy to help them if they need new stuff.
