"Ich hatt`einen Kameraden.."*Finished*
Posted by Inka Holmes on Tuesday, February 10, 2009 7:14 PM

Allright, this is my first posting on this site (exept from the introduction),its a project I started a few days ago. It might be a little macabre, but it shows the consequense of war. This little vignette will depict a scene from somewhere on the eastern front. The burial of a comrade. The scale is 1/35.

I used buildfoam and plasticard to build up the base inside the frame. The figure is a white metal Hornet figure,a waffen ss soldier in camo overalls.

Many waffen ss units did not use crosses to mark their graves. They used different kind of Runes. More specific variants of the Life Rune and the Death Rune.I am making the life runes.

I glue thoothpicks Runic style and cover them with Flexi Bark and sprinkle dirt over it to get more texture.

Here is a pic from the Northern Front, around Leningrad or in Finand. The Death rune is the life rune turned up-side down.

As soon as the Flexi Bark was dry I painted the Runes to look like Birch.I also cut small name disks to each of the five runes.

It was no way I could write small enough to make anything exept the ss runes readable on the name disks.

And this is where I stand now, waiting for the plaster mix to cure and harden the base surface.More tomorrow:) And I welcome any comments, suggestions and critics (unless too harsh:))

Now that is pretty sweet! The marker you use, and have a picture of, I've seen alot of... In pictures that is Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

One suggestion, if I may...   Make the SS Soldier hold a book.. (Bible Wink [;)] )   May add a little more to the scene..

On a sidequestion, how is the quality of the Hornet figure? Worth the money?

Hope it helps!! Smile [:)]

Thanks Lasse:)  The thought behind the dio is soldier on grave duty, just finished filling two graves and now having a smoke, relaxing sending his thoughts to the fallen comrades. But I will look into the book idea it might work..

I dont know the price of the figure as it was a gift (big up Brooksy!) but the quality seems fine.I never built a whitemetal fig before so I really dont know. But there was almost no clean up needed and the details are fine:)

a little update coming up right away:)

I primed the base with Chaos Black and as soon it was dry I drilled holes to the runes and masked the fresh graves.Next I watered up whiteglue to a sort of milky mix. This brushed on in a thin layer and sprinkeled with grass.  I think it will look boring with only grass so I am trying out different solutions, here with white stones which will surround a mount of semi-fresh earth..we`ll see what I finally come up with:)

Really, that's  just awsome!!!  What did you make to make that circle plant thingy I don't know the name for in english? Tongue [:P]

And how did you make the hole in the helmet? I suppose that's a fragment damage since it's not round?  And is the decal there a decal or painted on?

And how did you make that iron cross band? And you sure it's the correct length? Big Smile [:D]

Thanx Huxy:) the circle plant thingy (ekeløvs krans on norwegian) was made by a steel wire and plusmodels leaves. The hole in the helmet I just drilled a small hole and worked it a it with a scalpel and sanding paper...a shrapnel or a big caliber gun:)and the decal is archer dry transfer. The iron cross is from a dragon fret, the band is just a strip of masking tape painted, and its the correct widht and lenght;)

Yikes. I just now spotted the stalhelm with the shranel hole through the front.. Betcha THAT guy got a "closed casket" (figuratively speaking)..

Nice touch also on the grave marker wth the "Order of the Frozen Meat" ribbon (Iron Cross, 2nd Class)... Practically a unit badge for the Ost Front troops..

Is there a website were you got the figure from??? I looked for a hornet.com, but didn't find one that sold any figures... please help. Also, if you could find the website, a link would be great!

Looks really nice. The only thing I might do is add more dirt, on top of the graves, or at least in the grass off to the sides of the graves, where it was piled when they were dug.

I agree--beautiful work, but it needs just a little more dirt on top of the graves, I think--and also, that dirt would probably be on the sides of the graves as well, like where they would have dug the dirt out and put it there on the sides before filling it in. You might want to show that as well with a little dirt on the sides. It might look a litttle too clean now with that pure green grass.

The flowers are beautifully done--how did you make them?

By the way, I also like graveyards--here's one I did a few years ago. The tombstones are Verlinden, if I remember correctly?

Interesting subject.  Other than the points already made about the dirt, I think it is great.  The grave markers are very nicely done.
