Hans von Hammer

A third possibility is a highly condensed version of both formats, 86-ing chicken-sh... .err... I mean, overly "nit-picky" anal-retentive stuff thrown out...

That sounds good to me. This could be a good way to encourage people to try building Dio's. Don't want to put them off with to much nit picking.

Hans,

Your rules look good to me!  Sept 1st sounds like a good start date as well!

I second Bish's remark about the encouragement to start dio building. Would be nice if a group build such as this one would get more people enthousiastic about this particular type of modeling

Therefore a multitude of rules would only complicate matters.

People apply for this GB..... have to start from the beginning with a base of a certain max. dimension......people will vote afterwards with the host always being right.....

Works for meSmile

Only thing unclear to me is the update pictures part.... do we post WIPS... do we post less of them to not give away too many secrets....do we post only start and finish WIPS....?

I`m all for the K.I.S.S. method...if this starts gettin` silly , I`m out. Hammer is the boss, I`m starting everything from scratch so don`t care how big the base is...etc so post the rules and let`s get `r done...lol.

One thing I'd like to request is you guys keep the GB post thread here in the Dios forum. I don't see that breaking any rules- who would complain? Things get swallowed up in the Group Builds forum, and I'd like to stay up with you guys.

I would go with this, i can see there possably being long periods between updates. And it might be easier for guys new to Dio's. Also, if you don't mind the suggestion Hnas. Might be an idea to mention it in the other relivant forums, for those who not not come into the Dio forum but might like to want and give it a go.

Just a thought.

K.I.S.S...

Only post what you feel comfortable about... Problems too, if you need help and feel a pic would get it across better...  If you're showing off a figure, fine.. A muzzle brake, cool... Just don't post anything you'd not trust your momma with... Devil

Fer instance, I myself might post pics of a figure conversion, a wall's construction, a particular technique I used to make some chipped Zimmeritt areas, damaged control surfaces and fuselage flak damage, or some rubber cement mask-chipping...

Good idea about keeping the build in here, Steve... Let's make it so...  It's working well for the B-17 and B-25 Group Builds in the Aircraft Hooch...

So, in the next few days, we'll see in here, a combination of AMPS and IPMS Rules, with a KISS Format.  I'll mention it, in the GB Hooch, and that it's happening in HERE, and that it's a combination of a fun-build AND a competition, with all skill-levels having a shot at a prize...

Feel free to post pics (or a simple but CLEAR narrative) of your technique(s) for arriving at your chosen base-size, initially...

All sound good to me.

Feel free to post pics (or a simple but CLEAR narrative) of your technique(s) for arriving at your chosen base-size, initially...

And this is a good idea, getting the base right can make or break a dio before you have even started.

Especially for first-timers..

Here's what I do.

Step ONE:

Do a mock-up with note-book paper or newspaper for the base.. Then place all the models, structures, figures, terrain features, etc in place to get an idea about the size...  Always make the "base fit the diorama", never the "diorama fit the base"...  The models do NOT have to be complete.. They can be mock-ups as well.. Use similar-sized boxes for buildings, lumps of paper towels for terrian features, figures can be mocked-up from erasers and paper-clips...

I'd love in on this one as long as it remains open to different genres.

I am sure it will rud. A Dio is a Dio, doesn't have to be an aircrfat or piece of armour, or even military for that matter.

Good to hear, Bish.  You can definitely count me in then. I am leaning towards something along the lines of a sci-fi dio, something I've always wanted to try. Yes

Hans von Hammer

Does the dio have to be military in nature or whatever we want to do?

di-o-ram-a:  di·o·ram·a- (dhttp://img.tfd.com/hm/GIF/imacr.gifhttp://img.tfd.com/hm/GIF/lprime.gifhttp://img.tfd.com/hm/GIF/schwa.gif-rhttp://img.tfd.com/hm/GIF/abreve.gifmhttp://img.tfd.com/hm/GIF/prime.gifhttp://img.tfd.com/hm/GIF/schwa.gif, -rähttp://img.tfd.com/hm/GIF/prime.gifmhttp://img.tfd.com/hm/GIF/schwa.gif) - n.

A three-dimensional miniature or life-size scene in which figures, stuffed wildlife, or other objects are arranged in a naturalistic setting against a painted background.
In other words, build what ya want, TM...Wink
It doesn't have to be military, no... According to Shep Pines, my personal diorama hee-ro, "A diorama, in the modern sense, has come to mean any scene exeecuted in three dimensions, whether it is enclosed in a box or not."...
IMNSHO, the best dioramas do two things:
1: They show the subject "doing it's thing".
2: They tell a story (and a side-story sometimes)...
The story should be obvious and immediately apparent to the viewer... The viewer shouldn't need the diorama action (or in-action) explained to him/her...  If you include a narrative, it should be no longer than 2 or three lines...
If it takes a paragraph (or more) to describe what's happening, you've got a weak story... Any of the "Well, maybe this guy's doing this thing, or just finished doing that thing" stuff from a couple of viewers will result in confusion and generally indicates a poorly thought-out storyline...
Telling the viewer what's happening, what the story is, should be done in a single word or three, if any narrative is needed...  An example of Shep's wording went like this: "A diorama of a Sherman tank, with a dead crewman hangin' out the hatch with the tank commander desparately trying to get his .50 cal working, but to no avail, could be titled with something like "Jammed!...  Drama and action...
A couple of dismounted GIs at a crossroads (with a sign nearby reading "Malmedy-8Km", with their M8 Greyhounds pointing in different directions, and holding maps  coud be titled, "Lost"...
With the M8s pointing in different directions, and one TC looking down at his map while the other points down a road, we know who's doing the talking, and who's doing the listening, and the story is readily apparent to the viewer... It's December, 1944, the Battle of the Bulge, just prior to the "Malmedy Massacre", and these two M8 crews are about to have a really bad day...
A '75 Vette at a gas station dio with a sign reading "NO GAS TODAY" hastily painted and set near the pumps, with the "Vetteman" Wink and Staion-owner in a shouting match tells us that it's 1976 or so, and the Arab Oil Embargo has hit home to the 'Vetteman...
So just build what ya want, and feel free to brain-storm about it...

Yep, I saw that Hans. My concern was the possibility of a particular theme being decided on by a majority vote, and sort of hoping it didn't head in that direction.

I think you got your wish.. I only threw that in there is case it fizzled otherwise... So, by decree and definition, ALL genres are open, and I'm looking at a start-date of 1SEP 11... Anyone got a problem with that?  I can push it back aother 30 days if y'all want, but I wanna start ASAP before we lose momentum...

Sept. 1 is perfect for me too and especially the 229 day running period. No complaints here.

Now i better start conjuring up a story or two to choose from. I have to start from scratch as i dont even have a model to work with yetStick out tongue

Sept. 1 is ok for me, I hope. We`re about to get whacked by Irene...by Saturday night/ Sunday morning. Tired my kids out by making them run my stash up to the 2nd floor.

Sept 1 works for me as well.  Have a few ideas floating around, just need to make a decision.

Good luck to everyone in the path of Hurricane Irene - luckily  we're only getting some wind and rain here in Charleston.  Some advice to those in the path - evacuate if you are ordered to do so.  I was here in Chas for Hurricane Hugo back in 1989 and rode it out - not a good idea.  One of the longest nights of my life.  Afterwards we had no power for 15 days.
