Diorama Group Build and Contest Roster

Since this is my first attempt at a group build, I'm not sure of the proper protocols. However I thought I would tell what I'm planning to build. The end diorama will look something along these lines

I won't start the base until I get the engine built. I'm in the process of salvaging a glue bomb version of the Monogram 4-4-0 "The General" in 1/25th scale. The original builder used massive amounts of tube glue. Many of the parts are distorted and useless. But I think there is enough there to build a reasonable replica of a Lombard steam powered log hauler. Parts of the original kit are testing in my freezer. Hopefully the joints will seperate without more breakage.

Fortunately the saddle tank will hide a lot of scars

Is there going to be a badge for the group build?

I've got my bases cut and all my prepatory drawings done, and as a bonus I found some reference photos I thouht I had lost.

Hey I know its about two weeks into this build but I was hoping I could join. I just rejoined the boards after a too-long hiatus, and this sounds like a great time.

If its too late, no worries, won't stop me from building!

It's implied in the base selection section, along with cropping..

Got my Shep Paine book today. There is NOTHING in there about the subject overhanging the base being a bad thing, but you own the table, you set the rules.

My dio is a version of the Lady Be Good idea.

36 inches translates into 91.4 centimetres. So for us metric guys the size limit is 91.4x91.4cm.

Well that's one good thing, i don't think i have any planned that will be that big.

Thanks Bish and Richard for the help, I was close with the size, I was doubtfull because the headers are more squarish (I don´t know if the word exist, but it's the idea) than that of the bricks I know.

Now to make a mould...

ATTENTION

All participants, please note changes to rules 12 and 13.  

 Due to the fact that some will naturally be larger or smaller dio-builders, I've split the dio categories into larger than 225 square inches,  and smaller than 225 sq.in... You gotta pick which category you want and build ONE dio..  The prizes remain the same, except that they'll be awarded to a winner and loser in each of the categories, meaning I just doubled the number of prizes.  (gulp) I gotta shell out for..

Don't need to post which one you're building in, that info will not be needed until final juding...  Size-limit remains 36" x 36"... (Aplogies to those on the metric system... I don't have a metric conversion calculator)

Going over to the lumber yard to scrounge up a piece of plywood this morning.

This is going to involve lots of water.

I just went out and measured the size of bricks in our house, which was built in the 30's. They are 21.5cm longx7cmhighx10cmwide, we had some headers so could measure the width as well. So about the same as Richards.

My diorama will be german, and in the middle (more of less) of the WWII.

 

 

After the introduction I have a question: someone knows the size of the bricks used in Europe?, I need to model some, and don´t like the information I can gather from the photos. And I imagine that there was a "mean" size in every country.

First of all: Welcome to FSM and welcome back to the hobby! We can never have enough of "our kind"

Just measured a brick in my wall in front of me and it measures 21.5x8x10 centimeters. Had to guesstimate the depth but theyre slightly wider than the heighth. Should be usable for WW2 bricks too. The older (medieval era) bricks are about two thirds of this size if i think about walls i have seen from that time in town.

Woulda dinged ya on the dio.. Over-hanging the base borders is a no-no...   It's a great entrant for a "display model" though.. Whar scale is it?

I would love to do one of those German flying boats, but could never think of a decent dio. Now you have given me ideas.

Would a piece of would cut from some old funiture i had salvaged be cheap enough.

HvH you should award freeway iceplant Clusters to the cheapest base.

I started my project last night. In the spirit of full disclosure, the main subject is/ was a half completed model that I completely took apart and hacked up. It has traces of old paint on it which kind of play into the theme, but it will start from all the same original pieces.

That's me with the blinkers on, on the freeway shoulder retrieving that nice piece of plywood in the median.
